Book excerpt: On the day you were born, you were imprinted with a plan and a purpose – elegant patterns that can be read to see who you really are and what your true calling is. And like your own personal map, the design for each phase of your life journey was created on the day of your birth. Based on ancient Chinese principles of balance and health, this book gives you a rich understanding of your hidden symmetry – the intricate inner design that influences who you are and how your life unfolds. This book is not about astrology or numerology; it is grounded in thousands of years of research about how time moves in natural patterns that profoundly affect you. You can use this knowledge to discover the themes running through your life experience, tap into your core strengths, find lasting love, and do your best work in the world. Jean Haner shows you how to ride the waves instead of fight the current of your life, make the best use of what’s coming in future years, and understand why things happened as they did in the past. Jean will guide you to discover who you really came here to be, recognize the true nature of everyone you meet, and break free of old limitations – to create a life of conscious vitality, joy, ease, and love!

Book excerpt: A lyrical and poignant coming-of-age story about one girl's immigration experience, as she moves from Haiti to New York City, by award-winning author Edwidge Danticat. It is election time in Haiti, and bombs are going off in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. During a visit from her home in rural Haiti, Celiane Espérance and her mother are nearly killed. Looking at her country with new eyes, Celiane gains a fresh resolve to be reunited with her father in Brooklyn, New York. The harsh winter and concrete landscape of her new home are a shock to Celiane, who witnesses her parents' struggle to earn a living and her brother's uneasy adjustment to American society, and at the same time encounters her own challenges with learning and school violence. National Book Award finalist Edwidge Danticat weaves a beautiful, honest, and timely story of the American immigrant experience in this luminous novel about resilience, hope, and family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access wide-ranging collation of papers examines a host of issues in studying second-generation immigrants, their life courses, and their relations with older generations. Tightly focused on methodological aspects, both quantitative and qualitative, the volume features the work of authors from numerous countries, from differing disciplines, and approaches. A key addition in a corpus of literature which has until now been restricted to studying the childhood, adolescence and youth of the children of immigrants, the material includes analysis of longitudinal and transnational efforts to address challenges such as defining the population to be studied, and the difficulties of follow-up research that spans both time and geographic space. In addition to perceptive reviews of extant literature, chapters also detail work in surveying the children of immigrants in Europe, the USA, and elsewhere. Authors address key questions such as the complexities of surveying each generation in families where parents have migrated and left children in their country of origin, and the epistemological advances in methodology which now challenge assumptions based on the Westphalian nation-state paradigm. The book is in part an outgrowth of temporal factors (immigrants’ children are now reaching adulthood in more significant numbers), but also reflects the added sophistication and sensitivity of social science surveys. In linking theoretical and methodological factors, it shows just how much the study of these second generations, and their families, can be enriched by evolving methodologies. This book is open access under a CC BY license

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dave Shoji, legendary coach for the University of Hawai‘i women’s volleyball program, looks back at four decades of coaching to tell his story along with that of the Rainbow Wahine, four-time national champions and consistently among the top-ranked teams in college sports. With the assistance of longtime beat writer Ann Miller, Shoji provides an exclusive look at the state’s perennially successful athletic team. His memoir traces the history and rise of the program—from 1975, when he was hired as a part-time coach by women’s athletic director Donnis Thompson and matches were held in the “sweatbox” of Klum Gym; through the late 1970s and the 1980s, which saw the start of the Booster Club and excitement of playing in front of sell-out crowds at Honolulu’s Blaisdell Arena; into the 1990s with the team’s move to its current home at the Stan Sheriff Center, attracting the sport’s largest and most devoted following; to the landmark 2013 season when Shoji became the winningest coach in NCAA history and on his way to a fortieth year with the Rainbow Wahine program. Interviews with memorable players, family, and assistant and rival coaches, together with over 100 action photos—plus twenty more in a color insert—bring back both thrilling and poignant memories of the greatest moments of Rainbow Wahine volleyball. The comprehensive yearly statistics, full player rosters, and handy index make the book a needed reference for trivia buffs. A keepsake for fans and players alike, Wahine Volleyball: 40 Years Coaching Hawai‘i’s Team will delight any sports enthusiast as well as readers who enjoy first-person remembrances of what makes Hawai‘i unique.
