Book excerpt: The third edition of the MLA's widely used Introduction to Scholarship in Modern Languages and Literatures features sixteen new essays by leading scholars. Designed to highlight relations among languages and forms of discourse, the volume is organized into three sections. "Understanding Language" provides an overview of the field of linguistics, with special attention to language acquisition and the social life of languages. "Forming Texts" offers tools for understanding how speakers and writers shape language; it examines scholarship in the distinct but interrelated fields of rhetoric, composition, and poetics. "Reading Literature and Culture" continues the work of the first two sections by introducing major areas of critical study. The nine essays in this section cover textual and historical scholarship; interpretation; comparative, cultural, and translation studies; and the interdisciplinary topics of gender, sexuality, race, and migrations (among others). As in previous volumes, an epilogue examines the role of the scholar in contemporary society. Each essay discusses the significance, underlying assumptions, and limits of an important field of inquiry; traces the historical development of its subject; introduces key terms; outlines modes of research now being pursued; postulates future developments; and provides a list of suggestions for further reading. This book will interest any member of the academic community seeking a review of recent scholarship, while it provides an indispensable resource for undergraduate and graduate students of modern languages and literatures.

This book was released on 2004-11-24 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Asia is home to a large number of languages and dialects. The considerable body of linguists working on this region have made significant contributions to our understanding of language, society, and language in society on a global scale. Despite this, there is as yet no recognized international forum for the exchange of ideas amongst South Asian linguists. The YEARBOOK OF SOUTH ASIAN LANGUAGES AND LINGUISTICS is designed to be just that forum. It brings together empirical and theoretical research and serves as a testing ground for the articulation of new ideas and approaches which may be grounded in a study of South Asian languages but which have universal applicability. Each volume of this annual series will have four major sections: I. Invited contributions consisting of state-of-the-art essays on research in South Asian languages. II. Refereed open submissions focusing on relevant issues and providing various viewpoints. III. Reports from around the world book reviews and abstracts of doctoral theses. IV. A forum for dialogue; critiques; comments and discussions; reports on research activities; and conference announcements. In the words of the Editor-in-Chief, 'other than excellence and non-isolationism, we have no agenda and no thematic priorities'. This pioneering series will interest all those in the fields of sociolinguistics, language studies, grammar, literature and sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Languages in Education At the meeting of the American Philological Association, which was held in New Haven, in July, 1872, a paper was read by Prof. G. F. Comfort, the Secretary and the chief founder of that society, upon the subject, "Should the Study of the Modern precede that of the Ancient Languages?" taking the affirmative of this question. This paper was published in the August number of Scribner's Monthly Magazine of that year. It covered nearly all the points that are involved in the discussion of the relative merits and claims of the ancient and the modern languages in a general system of education. This subject has recently been brought with great prominence to the attention of the American public, chiefly through the work of the Modern Language Association, and through the action of Harvard University in eliminating Greek from the required studies in the college curriculum. Many calls have been made by teachers and others for the article by Prof. Comfort alluded to above. As the plates for the series of the magazine in which it originally appeared have been destroyed, the undersigned takes pleasure in presenting it to the public in this separate and permanent form, with the title changed to "Modern Languages in Education."
