Book excerpt: Ian Hay's 'A Safety Match' is a riveting novel that delves into the complexities of social class and romance in the early 20th century England. Written in a witty and insightful style, Hay explores the lives of the upper-middle-class characters with depth and nuance, highlighting the nuances of relationships and societal expectations. The novel's literary context places it within the tradition of British romantic comedies, with Hay's sharp dialogue and keen observations shining through. The storyline is engaging and keeps the reader intrigued till the very end, making it a must-read for fans of classic British literature. Ian Hay, a prolific Scottish author, draws from his own experiences and observations of British society to create a compelling narrative that reflects the time period in which he lived. His background as a military officer and playwright adds a unique perspective to his writing, offering readers a glimpse into the world of the British elite with authenticity and charm. I highly recommend 'A Safety Match' to readers who enjoy smart social commentary, engaging plotlines, and well-drawn characters. Hay's novel is a delightful read that offers both entertainment and insight into the intricacies of relationships and society in the early 20th century England.
Download or read book Critical Forms written by Ross Wilson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-13 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Forms is an account of the generic forms in which literary criticism has been undertaken. It examines chiefly Anglophone literary criticism, with comparative discussion of French and German material, from around 1750 to the present and examines prefaces, selections and anthologies, reviews, lectures, dialogues, letters, and life-writing. Though not intended to be an exhaustive history of the period, Critical Forms begins in the mid-eighteenth century with the emergence of something like the forms (chiefly, the essay and the treatise) in which criticism is still predominantly practised. In order at least to complicate this predominance, the book documents an abiding plurality in the forms of literary critical writing in the subsequent period, leading up to the present. Ross Wilson both questions the status of the essay and treatise as the 'natural' forms of literary criticism and shows that the history of literary criticism is much more formally various and innovative than the usual ways of recounting that history as a succession of schools and movements would allow. Critical Forms harbours the hope that it will make available a wider array of forms for the practice of literary criticism today; it is this hope that licenses its own experiments in critical form.

Book Synopsis Personal Modernisms by : James Gifford
Download or read book Personal Modernisms written by James Gifford and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alberta is well known for its fossil treasures, and author John Acorn is as keen on the long-dead creatures of Alberta as he is on the living. Here, John features 80 of the most noteworthy fossils, fossil locations, and fossil hunters from this most palaeontological of provinces. There's more to the story of "deep Alberta" than dinosaurs, but dinosaur fans will find all their favourite beasts here as well -- from Edmontosaurus to Tyrannosaurus rex, and everything in-between. Then there are the surprises, such as the world's oldest pike, the discovery of a venomous mammal, and the fossils found in such unlikely places as Edmonton and Calgary. Prepared with the collaboration of palaeontologists around Alberta, and the world-renowned Royal Tyrrell Museum, this is a book that is long overdue, and that deserves a place on everyone's bookshelf.
Book Synopsis The Mainstream Companion to Scottish Literature by : Trevor Royle
Download or read book The Mainstream Companion to Scottish Literature written by Trevor Royle and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mainstream Companion to Scottish Literature is the most comprehensive reference guide to Scotland's literature, covering a period from the earliest times to the early 1990s. It includes over 600 essays on the lives and works of the principal poets, novelists, dramatists critics and men and women of letters who have written in English, Scots or Gaelic. Thus, as well as such major writers as Robert Henryson, William Dunbar, Gavin Douglas, Allan Ramsay, Robert Fergusson, Robert Burns, Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and Hugh MacDiarmid, the Companion also lists many minor writers whose work might otherwise have been overlooked in any survey of Scottish literature. Also included here are entries on the lives of other more peripheral writers such as historians, philosophers, diarists and divines whose work has made a contribution to Scottish letters. Other essays range over such general subjects as the principal work of major writers, literary movements, historical events, the world of printing and publishing, folklore, journalism, drama and Gaelic. A feature of the book is the inclusion of the bibliography of each writer and reference to the major critical works. This comprehensive guide is an essential tool for the serious student of Scottish literature as well as being an ideal guide and companion for the general reader.
