Book excerpt: The Five Nations is a collection of poems by English writer and poet Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936). It was first published in late 1903, both in the United Kingdom and in U.S.A.Some of the poems were new; some had been published before (notably "Recessional," of 1897), sometimes in different versions. DescriptionIn 1903, the United Kingdom consisted of four nations: England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It was soon suggested that Kipling's "five nations" were the "five free nations of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa [i.e. Cape Colony], and 'the islands of the sea' [i.e. the British Isles]" all dominated by Britons; and except in the last case, by recent settlers. That suggestion was endorsed some one hundred years later. No author seems to have suggested that the "five nations" included India which, as the British Raj, was the basis of Britain's claim to imperial greatness. In an early (1903) review, American critic Bliss Perry delicately called The Five Nations both "a notable collection" and "singularly restricted in range of interest."The poemsThe poems are divided into two groups. The first is untitled, and covers a wide range of subjects. The second is titled "Service Songs," and mostly relates to the real or imagined experiences of common British soldiers around the turn of the 20th century. .....Joseph Rudyard Kipling (30 December 1865 - 18 January 1936) was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He was born in India, which inspired much of his work.Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888).His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If-" (1910). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature, and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift."Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the British Empire, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius, as distinct from fine intelligence, that I have ever known." In 1907, at the age of 42, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize and its youngest recipient to date. He was also sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, both of which he declined.Kipling's subsequent reputation has changed according to the political and social climate of the age and the resulting contrasting views about him continued for much of the 20th century. George Orwell saw Kipling as "a jingo imperialist," who was "morally insensitive and aesthetically disgusting." Literary critic Douglas Kerr wrote: "[Kipling] is still an author who can inspire passionate disagreement and his place in literary and cultural history is far from settled. But as the age of the European empires recedes, he is recognised as an incomparable, if controversial, interpreter of how empire was experienced. That, and an increasing recognition of his extraordinary narrative gifts, make him a force to be reckoned with."

Book excerpt: The book methodicallly graphs the direction of the English novel from its rise as the chief scholarly class in the mid twentieth century to its mid twenty first century status of unpredictable greatness in new media conditions. Precise parts address 'The English Novel as a Distinctly Modern Genre', 'The Novel in the Economy', 'Genres', 'Gender' (performativity, masculinities, woman's rights, eccentric), and 'The Burden of Representation' (class and ethnicity). Broadened contextualized close readings of more than twenty key writings from Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) to Tom McCarthy's Satin Island (2015) supplement the methodical approach and energize future research by giving reviews of gathering and hypothetical points of view. Expanding specialization inside the teach of English and American Studies has moved the concentration of insightful dialog toward hypothetical reflection and social settings. These improvements have profited the train in more courses than one, yet they have likewise brought about a specific disregard of close perusing. Therefore, understudies and scientists inspired by such material are compelled to swing to grant from the 1970s, quite a bit of which depends on dated methodological and ideological presuppositions. The handbook means to fill this hole by giving new readings of writings that figure unmistakably in the writing classroom and in academic level headed discussion aE ' from James' The Ambassadors to McCarthy's The Road.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth volume of Rudyard Kipling's letters, now collected and edited for the first time, continues the story of his life from the end of the Edwardian era through the Great War, a crisis in Kipling's life as well as in that of the world. The years before the war saw the publication of Rewards and Fairies and Songs from Books. In politics, the great issue was Irish home rule and the fate of Ulster. At the outbreak of the war Kipling devoted himself to the struggle. He wrote patriotic verse, made recruiting speeches, and traveled as a correspondent to the French and Italian fronts. He published no new fiction, only what he wrote as correspondent and propagandist: France at War, The Fringes of the Fleet, and The Eyes of Asia. In 1915 his only son, John, was killed in the Battle of Loos; at the same time Kipling began to suffer from the undiagnosed ulcer that would torment him for the rest of his life. His last volume of poems, The Years Between, published in 1919, embodies the suffering and bitterness of these years.

Book excerpt: Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) is among the most popular, acclaimed and controversial of writers in English. His books have sold in great numbers, and he remains the youngest writer to have won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Many associate Kipling with poems such as 'If–', his novel Kim, his pioneering use of the short story form and such works for children as the Just So Stories. For others, though, Kipling is the very symbol of the British Empire and a belligerent approach to other peoples and races. This Companion explores Kipling's main themes and texts, the different genres in which he worked and the various phases of his career. It also examines the 'afterlives' of his texts in postcolonial writing and through adaptations of his work. With a chronology and guide to further reading, this book serves as a useful introduction for students of literature and of Empire and its after effects.

Book excerpt: This new bibliography of Rudyard Kipling, the first English-language author to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, is the first to appear in fifty years and the first to incorporate modern standards of collation, binding cloth description, publication dates and prices, and dust jacket description. It fully describes 480 first editions, authorized and unauthorized, appearing as books, pamphlets, leaflets, and broadsides from 1881 through 2008 in British India, England, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and Chile--a dozen of which titles were not noted by prior bibliographers. This work also includes 127 titles of books with contributions from Kipling, 17 titles containing prefaces, introductory letters and forewords by Kipling, and 123 titles first printing his private letters. These primary entries, besides describing each edition by publication type, size, pagination formula, binding, binding texture, ISCC-NBS color system name, dust jacket, copyright data, and cross-references to prior bibliographies, also include information on institutional library locations, manuscripts, and significant first editions of the title in later publishers' series and in other countries. Also described are all important association and presentation copies of Kipling's earliest works, with full inscriptions and institutional collection locations. Other major sections describe collected and uniform sets, editions listed by prior bibliographers that are not first editions but are collectible, and misattributions. Significant innovations in this bibliography include the first complete chronological list of all of Kipling's newspaper and periodical appearances, the first examination of all English and American auction sale catalogues with lots of his editions (significant copies are cross-referenced in the entry texts), and separate listings of unauthorized private editions and private editions as first editions, musical settings of the poems, plays based on Kipling's works, film treatments in motion pictures and for television, published drawings and caricatures, and Kipling's symbols: the swastika and the Ganesh. Further appendices include a chronology of the author's life and major works, and titles of biographical studies of Rudyard and his immediate family. These contents are present in one substantial volume containing the primary entries, grayscale images of bindings and title pages, and indices. The second volume, containing all the other classified sections, is included on the enclosed CD-ROM, along with color images of bindings and title pages.
