Book excerpt: From acclaimed historian Lawrence Goldstone comes a thrilling narrative of courage, determination, and competition: the story of the intense rivalry that fueled the rise of American aviation. The feud between this nation’s great air pioneers, the Wright brothers and Glenn Curtiss, was a collision of unyielding and profoundly American personalities. On one side, a pair of tenacious siblings who together had solved the centuries-old riddle of powered, heavier-than-air flight. On the other, an audacious motorcycle racer whose innovative aircraft became synonymous in the public mind with death-defying stunts. For more than a decade, they battled each other in court, at air shows, and in the newspapers. The outcome of this contest of wills would shape the course of aviation history—and take a fearsome toll on the men involved. Birdmen sets the engrossing story of the Wrights’ war with Curtiss against the thrilling backdrop of the early years of manned flight, and is rich with period detail and larger-than-life personalities: Thomas Scott Baldwin, or “Cap’t Tom” as he styled himself, who invented the parachute and almost convinced the world that balloons were the future of aviation; John Moisant, the dapper daredevil who took to the skies after three failed attempts to overthrow the government of El Salvador, then quickly emerged as a celebrity flyer; and Harriet Quimby, the statuesque silent-film beauty who became the first woman to fly across the English Channel. And then there is Lincoln Beachey, perhaps the greatest aviator who ever lived, who dazzled crowds with an array of trademark twists and dives—and best embodied the romance with death that fueled so many of aviation’s earliest heroes. A dramatic story of unimaginable bravery in the air and brutal competition on the ground, Birdmen is at once a thrill ride through flight’s wild early years and a surprising look at the personal clash that fueled America’s race to the skies. Praise for Birdmen “A meticulously researched account of the first few hectic, tangled years of aviation and the curious characters who pursued it . . . a worthy companion to Richard Holmes’s marvelous history of ballooning, Falling Upwards.”—Time “The daredevil scientists and engineers who forged the field of aeronautics spring vividly to life in Lawrence Goldstone’s history.”—Nature “The history of the development of an integral part of the modern world and a fascinating portrayal of how a group of men and women achieved a dream that had captivated humanity for centuries.”—The Christian Science Monitor “Captivating and wonderfully presented . . . a fine book about these rival pioneers.”—The Wall Street Journal “[A] vivid story of invention, vendettas, derring-do, media hype and patent fights [with] modern resonance.”—Financial Times “A powerful story that contrasts soaring hopes with the anchors of ego and courtroom.”—Kirkus Reviews “A riveting narrative about the pioneering era of aeronautics in America and beyond . . . Goldstone raises questions of enduring importance regarding innovation and the indefinite exertion of control over ideas that go public.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Book excerpt: Orville and Wilbur Wright are two Americans credited with designing and constructing the world’s first successful airplane, as well as making the first controlled, motor-powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight. While their first flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1912 was short (only 12 seconds) their impact on history would be long-lasting. Their breakthrough was not flight itself but control of flight. That control allowed for flight for mankind, and what they received a patent for (three-axis control, or left-right, forward-back and up-down) has become the standard on all fixed-wing aircrafts. Their inquisitive minds led them to build their own wind tunnel, which allowed them to study such sciences as lift and wind currents. Despite their breakthrough, they did not enjoy the revelry that may be expected from their monumental invention. They faced skepticism in Europe, problems with their patent and lawsuits. Their business ventures faced issues, and the friendships that the brothers had forged with others in the industry suffered. Even today, their status as inventors of the airplane has come under scrutiny, being subject to counter-claims by various parties. While questions may persist as to who invented what first, the contribution of the Wright brothers to the field of aviation cannot be understated. It was after their invention (and their various demonstrations of it) that the aviation field truly got off the ground. Author Don Harris, gives the reader a brief introduction to the brothers who gave birth to flight in this eBook.

Book excerpt: To mark the centenary of the Wright brothers' pioneering flights on 17 December 1903, the Science Museum will republish Gibbs-Smith's classic introduction to their remarkable careers and their unique place in aviation history. The Wrights were arguably the first to make powered, sustained and controlled flights, near Kitty Hawk, NC; the aeroplane, the first Flyer, was of their own design and construction and had been developed over a period of three years. It was loaned to the Science Museum, London, from 1928 to 1948, and is now displayed in the National Air and Space Museum (Smithsonian Institution) in Washington DC, a reproduction remaining in London. This edition of Gibbs-Smith's authoritative text, first published in 1987, is illustrated with a number of historic photographs and detailed diagrams.

Concise and elegantly written non-fiction books and audiobooks help you learn the core subject matter in 20% of the time that it takes to read a typical book. Life is short, so explore a multitude of fascinating historical, biographical, scientific, political, and financial topics in only an hour each. The Wright brothers, Orville Wright, 1871 to 1948, and Wilbur Wright, 1867 to 1912, were American aviators and inventors credited with designing, constructing, and flying the world's first successful sustained flight, powered aircraft, the Wright Flyer, in 1903. The Wright brothers, two of seven children, were born and raised in Dayton, Ohio to Bishop Milton Wright and Susan Catherine Koerner. Growing up, the Wright family moved frequently due to their father's work. The brothers both attended high school in Richmond, Indiana, but did not receive diplomas due to another abrupt move. From early on, the brothers were keen entrepreneurs and engineers. Their first joint venture was a bicycle sale and repair store called Wright Cycle Exchange. The Wright brothers had an intense interest in aviation and the design of flying machines and began serious research into using their skills and knowledge to develop a controllable machine that could sustain flight with a human aboard. They designed and tested various kites and hang-glider type devices, until finally finding the optimum dimensions, such as material weight, wingspan, etc, for what they were looking for, all while also developing their skills as pilots during extensive tests. The Wright's key breakthrough was their three-axis control system, which allowed a pilot to steer the aircraft, and maintain its equilibrium, effectively and a lot more easily that previous designs. From there the Wright brothers, via their company The Wright Company, spent their lives honing their devices, altering the steering mechanisms and wing types etc, adding engines and other technology. They also contributed to the training of a new generation of pilots for their new-fangled flying machines via the Wright Brothers Flying School. The Wright brothers changed the way we look at flight, as well as transport as a whole.
