Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Greatest Books, Vol. 5 The story opens on a grey October afternoon in the Isle of Wight, in the 'sixties. Alma Lee, the coachman's handsome young daughter, is toiling up a steep hill overlooking Chalkburne, tired and laden with parcels from the town. As she leans on a gate, Judkins, a fellow-servant of her father's, drives up in a smart dog-cart, and offers her a lift home. She refuses scornfully, to the young groom's mortification; he drives off, hurt by her coquetry and prophesying that pride goes before a fall. Then a sound of bells is heard - a waggon drawn by a fine bell-team climbs the hill, and stops by Alma. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Worlds Greatest Books, Vol. 12 The London company, under the name Of Jamestown, established the beginning of the first English town in America, May 13, 1607, with one hundred colonists. Captain John Smith was the genius Of the colony, and it enjoyed a certain prosperity while he remained with it. A curious incident Of its history was the importation Of a large number of young women of good character, who were sold for one hundred and twenty, or even one hun dred and fifteen, pounds Of tobacco (at thirteen shillings a pound) to the lonely settlers. The Company failed, with all its expenditures, some half-million dollars, in 1624, and at that time, numbered only two thousand souls - the relics of nine thousand, who had been sent out from England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Greatest Books, Vol. 9 I have hated myself that I might love you; I came hither to ruin myself in a perpetual imprisonment that I might make you live quietly and at ease. Nothing but virtue, joined to a love perfectly disengaged from the senses, could have produced such effects. Vice never inspires anything like this; it is too much enslaved to the body. This was my cruel uncle's notion; he measured my virtue by the frailty Of my sex, and thought it was the man and not the person I loved. But he has been guilty to no purpose. I love you more than ever, and so revenge myself on him. I will still love you with all the tenderness of my soul till the last moment of my life. He then hurried to the harem to make sure that the king's wives should look their best, and insisted upon Phaedime painting her face white, and putting on a simple, dark dress without ornament, except the chain given her by Cambyses on her marriage, to arouse the pity Of the Achaemenidae, to which family she herself belonged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Greatest Books, Vol. 8 It was upon a delicious summer morning that a youth approached the ford of a small river, near the Royal castle of Plessis-les-Tours, in ancient Touraine. The age of the young traveller might be about nineteen or twenty, and his face and person were very prepossessing. His smart blue bonnet, with sprig of holly and eagle's feather, was already recognised as the Scottish headgear. Two persons loitered on the opposite side of the small river and observed the youth. "Hark, sir, he halloes to know whether the water be deep," said the younger of the two. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Greatest Books, Vol. 2: Fiction One damp, misty March morning, I dismounted from the top of a coach in the yard of a London inn. Deliver ing my scanty baggage to a porter, I followed him to a lodging prepared for me by an acquaintance. It con sisted Of a small room in which I was to sit, and a smaller one still in which I was to sleep. Having breakfasted comfortably by a good fire, I sallied forth and easily found my way to the place I was in quest of, for it was scarcely ten minutes' walk dis tant. I was cordially received by the big man to whom some Of my productions had been sent by a kind friend, and to whom he had given me a letter Of introduction, which was respectfully read. But he informed me that he was selling his publishing business, and so could not make use of my literary help. He gave me counsel, however, especially advising me to write some evangelical tales, in the style Of the Dairyman's Daughter. AS I told him I had never heard Of that work, he said: Then, Sir, procure it by all means. Much more con versation ensued, during which the publisher told me that he purposed continuing to issue once a month his maga zine, the Oxford Review, and to this he proposed that I should attempt to contribute. As I was going away he invited me to dine with him on the ensuing Sunday. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Greatest Books, Vol. 14: Philosophy (Continued); Economics The glory of the Oriental conception is the one indi vidual as the substantial being to which all belongs, so that no other individual has a separate existence, or mirrors himself in his subjective freedom. All the riches of imagination and nature are appropriated to that domi nant existence in which subjective freedom is essentially merged; the latter looks for its dignity not in itself but in the absolute Object. All the elements of a complete state - even subjectivity - may be found there, but not yet harmonised with the grand substantial being. For outside the one power - before which nothing can main tain an independent existence - there is only revolting caprice, which, beyond the limits Of the central power, moves at will without purpose or result. Accordingly we find the wild herds breaking out from the upland, falling upon the countries in question and laying them waste, or settling down in them and giving up their wild life; but in all cases lost resultlessly in the central substance. This phase of substantiality, since it has not taken up its antithesis into itself and overcome it, directly divides itself into two elements. On the one Side we see duration, stability - empires belonging, as it were, to mere Space (as distinguished from Time); unhistorical history, as, for example, in China, the state based on the family rela tion. Yet the states in question, without undergoing any Change in themselves, or in the principle of their exist ence, are constantly changing their opinion towards each other. They are in ceaseless con ict, which brings on rapid destruction. The opposing principle of individu ality enters into these con icting relations; but it is itself as yet only unconscious, merely natural universality light which is not yet the light of the personal soul. This history, too, is for the most part really unhistorical, for it is only the repetition of the same majestic ruin. Queen Anne, the Augustan age of the essay. There were no newspapers then, no magazines or re views, no Parliamentary reports, nothing corresponding to the so-called light literature of later days. The only centres of society that existed were the court, with the aristocracy that revolved about it, and the clubs and coffee-houses, in which the commercial and professional classes met to discuss matters of general interest, to crack their jokes, and to exchange small talk about this, that and the other person, man or woman, who might happen to figure, publicly or privately, at the time. The Spectator was one of the first organs to give form and consistency to the opinion, the humour and the gossip en gendered by this social contact. One of the first, but not quite the first' for the less famous, though still remembered, Tatler preceded it. 'and these two, The Tatler and The Spectator, have an intimate connection from the circumstance that Rich ard Steele, who started The Tatler in April, 1709, got Addison to write for it, and then joined with Addison in The Spectator when his own paper stopped in Janu ary, 1711. Addison and Steele had been friends since boyhood. They were contemporaries at the Charter house, and Steele Often spent his holidays in the parson age Oi Addison's father.
