Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World Soul All knowledge is built up from below. It is made up of facts, and facts only. It cannot be pulled down from above. You cannot formulate an hypothesis, say of God, with attributes and qualities, frame a theory on that, and fit facts to your theory. You only destroy your facts. But you cannot confine yourself to facts alone. By doing that you only accumulate a formless mass which is of little use. You must arrange your facts, and to do this when you have a large quantity of facts all verified and correct you must frame a theory based on an hypothesis to connect them. If it does so, then even if the hypothesis be unverifiable in itself and inconceivable as all hypotheses must be, it is of great value. It is, in fact, a necessity and a truth. But it is true only in so far as it does explain and co-ordinate phenomena, and no further. Should new phenomena appear, which the theory will not connect, then you must modify it till it docs, or abandon it if it will not. You must never hold to a theory or an hypothesis that is denied by facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: An impressive, thought-provoking work on the possible formulation of a future religious idea for mankind is entitled "The World Soul," by H. Fielding-Hall." Science, the author reminds us, has been seeking a world soul. He finds it in the world and in matter, not behind them. There are some startling disagreements with the fundamental, conventional ideas of Christianity. Nevertheless, the author and publisher combine in maintaining that "this book will be welcomed by those who have not found satisfaction in the theologies and philosophies of the day." -The American Review of Reviews, Volume 48 [1913] "Now and then we meet with a book outside of philosophy, outside of religion, outside of every known mode of presenting the meaning of the fact of life. They are a compound of amazing candor and amazing simplicity. They wipe away the shams and misconceptions. 'The World Soul' is such a book." -The Boston Transcript [1913]

He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journeys of a Soul Journeys OF A soul was written to show that nothing, however great or small, can reach the per fect state without sacrifice. Belt man, beast, bird, plant, the nations of the world, the world itself, or the whole universe, the same law applies. I harbor no claim to new theories; they are as old as the hills. I simply have hoped to convey to you, dear reader, in my own homely style, and through the medium of historical periods, that whatever shall be the spirit of the times, is only a phase of the build ing-up and tearing-down methods of the natural forces; and on completing these journeys I offer the following conclusions: Blessed be all the evils of the universe, for they shall lead us to all the good therein; And the pain and sorrows of war, for they shall bring peace on earth and good will to men; And the darkness of yesterday, for out of it came the light of to - day; And the destruction of all our hopes and ambitions, for it shall bring us greater reward. I ask your patience, dear read-er, in following me on these journeys, and permit me to say that I am willing to see the treatment of my subject lost sight of in comparison with its meaning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war.
