Book excerpt: As one of the largest and longest-lived trees in the world, kauri is a continual source of awe and wonder. Kauri is a tribute to this magnificent tree and its turbulent history. Revered for its size, kauri was at the very heart of Maori spirituality in important art works and rituals. Maori used kauri timber for crafting the great waka taua and carving waka huia which held important treasures. The gum was used for starting fires and colouring their moko, which was a particularly sacred procedure. The arrival of European settlers in the early 1800s saw the beginning of the decimation of the great kauri forests, which had once covered most of the top half of the North Island. Trunks of young kauri were ideal for ships' masts and spars, and settlers discovered the mature trees yielded high quality timber for building houses. Kauri provided a strong, pliable timber for craft and furniture-making and the gum, too, became essential in the manufacture of varnishes. The pace of exploitation of kauri forests escalated and much good timber was destroyed as land was cleared for agriculture. Today little remains of the magnificent kauri forests, and the last of the great giants like Tane Mahuta are carefully protected, but the influence of these mighty trees on the development of our country is still very evident.

Book excerpt: One of the largest trees in the world, the kauri is a natural wonder and a New Zealand icon. Its immense trunk has supplied timber for every conceivable use from Maori war canoes to modern European homes. Along the way, the industries that sprang up around it shaped national culture in ways that still echo today. Today the last remaining stands of kauri forest are preserved carefully, a must-see for locals and visitors alike. From commodity for exploitation to object of awe, the kauri and its story lie at the heart of New Zealand's own story, which is vividly brought to life in Joanna Orwin's book. Kauri: Witness to a Nation's History takes us back to the tree's ancient origins. We read about Maori myth surrounding the tree, and about the white-skinned mariners who sailed up to harvest timber for their own 'giant birds': the great naval ships of Europe. The tree's presence looms over the colonial period and beyond, and is the very stuff from which the flagpoles at Waitangi were carved (as well as some of the country's finest architectural treasures and modern works of art). The book charts the growth of the conservation movement, and presents the modern-day issues that affect the tree, such as Maori guardianship and tourism versus protection.

Book excerpt: The epic story of the planet’s oldest trees and the making of the modern world Humans have always revered long-lived trees. But as historian Jared Farmer reveals in Elderflora, our veneration took a modern turn in the eighteenth century, when naturalists embarked on a quest to locate and precisely date the oldest living things on earth. The new science of tree time prompted travelers to visit ancient specimens and conservationists to protect sacred groves. Exploitation accompanied sanctification, as old-growth forests succumbed to imperial expansion and the industrial revolution. Taking us from Lebanon to New Zealand to California, Farmer surveys the complex history of the world’s oldest trees, including voices of Indigenous peoples, religious figures, and contemporary scientists who study elderflora in crisis. In a changing climate, a long future is still possible, Farmer shows, but only if we give care to young things that might grow old.
