Book excerpt: The Art Nouveau movement in Russia was known under the name of The World of Art. This association grouped a remarkable collection of artist and poets at the end of the 19th century. Inspired by the poetic ideals of neo-Romanticism and Symbolism, they extended their influence into all forms of plastic and literary composition. Certain members of the group became world famous for book illustrations and theatrical decors. The illustrations include paintings, book illustrations, theatrical costumes and decors of such members as: Alexander Benois, Leon Bakst, Mstislav Dobujinsky, Boris Kustodiev, Evgeni Lanceray, Anna Ostrumova-Lebedeva, Konstantin Somov, Alexandre Golovin, Mikhail Vrubel, Valentin Serov Ivan Bilibin, Dimitri Mitrokin, Sergei Tchekonin and others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era of the Ballets Russes is probably the most chronicled in dance history, yet this book is the first to explain the company as a totality--its art, enterprise, and tudience. Taking a fresh look at familiar sources and incorporating fascinating archival material previously unexamined by Diaghilev scholars, Lynn Garafola paints an extraordinary portrait of the Ballets Russes, one that is bound to upset received opinion about the wellsprings and impact of early modernism.

Book excerpt: 'Russian Modernism' is dedicated to the radical modernist movements in Russian and German art during the early years of the 20th century. Their development was parallel and often intertwined. Artists such as Vasily Kandinsky or Alexej von Jawlensky are claimed by the Germans but remain Russian artists for the Russians. The Burluk brothers, who became celebrities of the Russian radical art scene, participated in the first exhibition of the Blauer Reiter. Russian artists travelled to Germany and lived there, while their German counterparts were aware of what was shown in Moscow exhibition halls. The diverse art movement "expressionism" was formed in Germany at the beginning of the 1910s and was given the name by the critic Herwarth Walden. Members of groups such as Die Brucke and the Blauer Reiter were initially influenced by the French Fauves movement and their Russian contemporaries also tried to find new artistic truth in Paris, 'la Ville Lumiere'. However, both in Germany and Russia the new French influence underwent radical transformation. Beautifully illustrated and designed, this book provides an insight into the work of Russian and German artists in the early years of the 20th century. AUTHOR: Konstantin Akinsha is a contributing editor for ARTnews magazine, New York, as well as a Research Fellow at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg, Germany. He has written a number of books, including The Holy Place (2007) (co-authored with Gregorii Kozlov) and The Funeral of the Revolution (2008). 260 illustrations

Book excerpt: Constructivist and sculptor Naum Gabo’s personal account of his development as an artist A leading exponent of the modern art movement known as Constructivism, Russian-born Naum Gabo was one of the most important sculptors of the twentieth century—an artist, designer, and theorist whose work changed the course of modern art. Of Divers Arts is Gabo’s beautifully written personal account of his development and growing into consciousness as an artist and his constant search for new techniques of communication. Throughout, he reflects on the relationship between art and science and reveals the many important influences on his work, especially the natural world, Russian religious and folk art, and the work of the artist Mikhail Vrubel. The result is a remarkable autobiographical account of a major modern artist.

The decades which had gone into renewing painting in France were compressed into ten to fifteen years in Russia. The 1910s unfolded under the sign of the growing influence of Cubism, which changed the very face of the fine arts. Yet by 1913, a turning point could be seen. New plastic problems arose, opening for Russian painters a way into the unknown. The scales began to tip in the direction of the Russian avant-garde.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russian Avant-garde was born at the turn of the 20th century in pre-revolutionary Russia. The intellectual and cultural turmoil had then reached a peak and provided fertile soil for the formation of the movement. For many artists influenced by European art, the movement represented a way of liberating themselves from the social and aesthetic constraints of the past. It was these Avant-garde artists who, through their immense creativity, gave birth to abstract art, thereby elevating Russian culture to a modern level. Such painters as Kandinsky, Malevich, Goncharova, Larionov, and Tatlin, to name but a few, had a definitive impact on 20th-century art.

Book excerpt: From the ruins of communism, Boris Groys emerges to provoke our interest in the aesthetic goals pursued with such catastrophic consequences by its founders. Interpreting totalitarian art and literature in the context of cultural history, this brilliant essay likens totalitarian aims to the modernists’ goal of producing world-transformative art. In this new edition, Groys revisits the debate that the book has stimulated since its first publication.
