Download or read book Jack of Newbury written by Thomas Deloney and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack of Newbury is an incisive yet remarkably entertaining work of narrative prose—and one that was extremely popular when it was published in the 1590s. The title character, an apprentice weaver, marries his former master’s wife, expands her cloth business into an enormous enterprise, refuses Henry VIII’s offer of a knighthood, and confronts Cardinal Wolsey; meanwhile, his servants find themselves in a range of comic situations. While amusing, Jack of Newbury also carries a serious and subversive political message: as Peter C. Herman puts it in his introduction to the volume, “the truly valuable subjects” in Deloney’s narrative “are not the nobility, but the merchant class.” The range of contextual materials included with this edition help to set it in the broader context of its economic and political as well as literary culture.

Book Synopsis The Culture of Cloth in Early Modern England by : Dr Roze Hentschell
Download or read book The Culture of Cloth in Early Modern England written by Dr Roze Hentschell and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through its exploration of the intersections between the culture of the wool broadcloth industry and the literature of the early modern period, this study contributes to the expanding field of material studies in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. The author argues that it is impossible to comprehend the development of emerging English nationalism during that time period, without considering the culture of the cloth industry. She shows that, reaching far beyond its status as a commodity of production and exchange, that industry was also a locus for organizing sentiments of national solidarity across social and economic divisions. Hentschell looks to textual productions-both imaginative and non-fiction works that often treat the cloth industry with mythic importance-to help explain how cloth came to be a catalyst for nationalism. Each chapter ties a particular mode, such as pastoral, prose romance, travel propaganda, satire, and drama, with a specific issue of the cloth industry, demonstrating the distinct work different literary genres contributed to what the author terms the 'culture of cloth'.

There are verses found on village crosses, fountains, sundials, bells, and caves. The book includes epitaphs and also verses inscribed on moveable objects such as clocks and pottery, silverware and books. Country charms and weather rhymes, children's games and farming songs add to the variety of tone and style.
Book Synopsis Introductions, Notes and Commentaries to Texts in ' The Dramatic Works of Thomas Dekker ': Volume 1, Sir Thomas More: Dekker's Addition; The Shoemakers' Holiday; Old Fortunatus; Patient Grissil; Satiromastix; Sir Thomas Wyatt by : Cyrus Hoy
Download or read book Introductions, Notes and Commentaries to Texts in ' The Dramatic Works of Thomas Dekker ': Volume 1, Sir Thomas More: Dekker's Addition; The Shoemakers' Holiday; Old Fortunatus; Patient Grissil; Satiromastix; Sir Thomas Wyatt written by Cyrus Hoy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1980-10-30 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four of the plays in this volume are based on important source materials, so that the relationship of plays to sources looms large in Cyrus Hoy's introductory essays. There is an extensive account of the relation of The Shoemakers' Holiday to Deloney's Gentle Craft. The Introduction to Old Fortunatus relates in detail that play's relationship to the German Volksbuch, and to the German Comoedia von Fortunate und seinem Seckel und Wünschhütlein (1620), a redaction of Dekker's play. The Introduction to Patient Grissil relates Dekker, Chettle and Haughton's play to the tradition of the Griselda story generally. The chronicle-history sources (Foxe, Grafton, Stow, Holinshed) of Sir Thomas Wyatt are surveyed in the Introduction, in his Introduction also, Professor Hoy considers the play's relationship to the lost play, Lady Jane, by Dekker, Chettle, Heywood, Webster and W. Smith. Satiromastix has no known source, but as Dekker's contribution to the stage quarrel of Marston and Jonson, this is a play that has always had particular interest for the student of Elizabethan theatrical history, and Professor Hoy therefore bestows on it the most elaborate Commentary in all these four volumes.
