Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Theodore Roosevelt, Vol. 14 In these greatest of the world's great hunting grounds there are mountain peaks whose snows are dazzling under the equatorial sun; swamps where the slime oozes and bubbles and {esters in the steaming heat; lakes like seas; skies that burn above deserts where the iron desolation is shrouded from view by the wavering mockery of the mirage; vast grassy plains where palms and thorn-trees fringe the dwindling streams; mighty rivers rush ing out of the heart of the continent through the sadness of endless marshes; forests of gorgeous beauty, where death broods in the dark and silent depths. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Theodore Roosevelt, Vol. 12: Memorial Edition In his preface he says, It is to me a labor of love to write of the great deeds of the border people, and then he adds something which is still more significant, For a number of years I spent most of my time on the fron tier and lived and worked like any other frontiersman, a fact which it is important to keep in mind, for those experiences gave him a special insight into the qualities and daily habits of the pioneers he had set himself to describe. A little farther on he adds: The men who have shared in the fast vanishing frontier life of the present feel a peculiar sympathy with the already long vanished frontier life of the past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Theodore Roosevelt, Vol. 1 of 14: Presidential Address and State Papers Roosevelt, for reasons so nearly Obvious as to need little comment. The palpable fact is that President Roosevelt's messages to Congress and a large number of his speeches, delivered in various parts of the country in his capacity as President, pertain to the same topics and serve a like public purpose. The messages must, of course, deal with matters affecting the welfare of the nation, and with various questions of public busi ness or policy, in those aspects that bear upon the work Of Congress. It is the President's Constitu tional right and duty to present information upon such topics, or to expound them from the standpoint of the Administration. In the long series of'presi dential messages one may, indeed, read the history of this country for more than a hundred years. To that Official narrative these messages by Mr. Roose velt add the latest and some of the most fascinating chapters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Theodore Roosevelt, Vol. 4: Memorial Edition The Century Dictionary defines Introduction as the act of making acquainted; a formal presentation. The presumption, the absolute needlessness of any such at tempt ou my part in regard to Colonel Theodore Roose velt or his writings, has impelled me to change the title of these few words. And my pen falters even in an Appreciation. Colonel Roosevelt and one other have touched my life as no other human beings ever can, and my host of intimate memories from the first time I ever spoke to him to his last letter, which reached me twenty four hours after his death - these are too perfect to dis turb, rearrange, and attempt to translate into abortive words, impotent phrases. If I could possess only a single volume of Colonel Roosevelt's I should choose A book-lover's Holidays in the Open, for in it are some of his most relaxed, his richest, literary moments. Once when we were walking Indian file down a steep wood trail headed away from Sagamore Hill, he turned suddenly and said. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Theodore Roosevelt, Vol. 2: Presidential Addresses and State Papers Remember that after the war has begun it is too late to improvise a navy. A naval war is two thirds settled in advance, at least two-thirds, because it is mainly settled by the preparation which has gone on for years preceding its outbreak. We won at Manila because the shipbuilders of the country, including those here at San Francisco, under the wise provisions Of Congress, had for fifteen years before been preparing the navy. In 1882 our navy was a Shame and a disgrace to the country in point Of material. The personnel contained as fine ma terial as there was to be found in the world but the ships and the guns were antiquated, and it would have been a wicked absurdity to have sent them against the ships Of any good power. Then we be gan to build up the navy. Every ship that fought under Dewey had been built between 1883 and 1896. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roosevelt's Writings: Selections From the Writings of Theodore Roosevelt Americanism can best be studied concretely through the careers of great Americans. For such a purpose few lives will be more useful than that of Roosevelt. If this book stimulates among the present and future generations Of young Americans an interest in this great man's life and leadership and in his ideals for democracy practically applied, it will have fulfilled my purpose. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE AND THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD • One of Modern Library’s 100 best nonfiction books of all time • One of Esquire’s 50 best biographies of all time “A towering biography . . . a brilliant chronicle.”—Time This classic biography is the story of seven men—a naturalist, a writer, a lover, a hunter, a ranchman, a soldier, and a politician—who merged at age forty-two to become the youngest President in history. The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt begins at the apex of his international prestige. That was on New Year’s Day, 1907, when TR, who had just won the Nobel Peace Prize, threw open the doors of the White House to the American people and shook 8,150 hands. One visitor remarked afterward, “You go to the White House, you shake hands with Roosevelt and hear him talk—and then you go home to wring the personality out of your clothes.” The rest of this book tells the story of TR’s irresistible rise to power. During the years 1858–1901, Theodore Roosevelt transformed himself from a frail, asthmatic boy into a full-blooded man. Fresh out of Harvard, he simultaneously published a distinguished work of naval history and became the fist-swinging leader of a Republican insurgency in the New York State Assembly. He chased thieves across the Badlands of North Dakota with a copy of Anna Karenina in one hand and a Winchester rifle in the other. Married to his childhood sweetheart in 1886, he became the country squire of Sagamore Hill on Long Island, a flamboyant civil service reformer in Washington, D.C., and a night-stalking police commissioner in New York City. As assistant secretary of the navy, he almost single-handedly brought about the Spanish-American War. After leading “Roosevelt’s Rough Riders” in the famous charge up San Juan Hill, Cuba, he returned home a military hero, and was rewarded with the governorship of New York. In what he called his “spare hours” he fathered six children and wrote fourteen books. By 1901, the man Senator Mark Hanna called “that damned cowboy” was vice president. Seven months later, an assassin’s bullet gave TR the national leadership he had always craved. His is a story so prodigal in its variety, so surprising in its turns of fate, that previous biographers have treated it as a series of haphazard episodes. This book, the only full study of TR’s pre-presidential years, shows that he was an inevitable chief executive. “It was as if he were subconsciously aware that he was a man of many selves,” the author writes, “and set about developing each one in turn, knowing that one day he would be President of all the people.”

A few others are included that he wrote to friends or relatives about the children. He began to write to them in their early childhood, and continued to do SO regularly till they reached maturity. Whenever he was separated from them, in the Spanish War, or on a hunting trip, or because they were at school, he sent them these messages of constant thought and love, for they were never for a mo ment out of his mind and heart.
