Book excerpt: This ebook edition contains the unabridged and complete works of the Brontë Family (Anne, Charlotte, Emily, Branwell and Patrick Brontë) with a detailed and functional table of contents. The Brontës were a nineteenth-century literary family associated with the village of Haworth in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. The sisters, Charlotte (born 21 April 1816, in Thornton near Bradford), Emily (born 30 July 1818 in Thornton), and Anne (born 17 January 1820 in Thornton), are well known as poets and novelists. They originally published their poems and novels under masculine pseudonyms, following the custom of the times practised by female writers. Their stories immediately attracted attention, although not always the best, for their passion and originality. Charlotte's Jane Eyre was the first to know success, while Emily's Wuthering Heights, Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and other works were later to be accepted as masterpieces of literature. The three sisters and their brother, Branwell, were very close and they developed their childhood imaginations through the collaborative writing of increasingly complex stories. The confrontation with the deaths first of their mother then of their two older sisters marked them profoundly and influenced their writing. Their fame was due as much to their own tragic destinies as to their precociousness. Since their early deaths, and then the death of their father in 1861, they were subject to a following that did not cease to grow. Their home, the parsonage at Haworth in Yorkshire, now the Brontë Parsonage Museum, has become a place of pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Branwell was born in Penzance in 1770, a member of a large and influential Cornish family of merchants and property owners. In 1821 her life changed forever when her sister Maria fell dangerously ill. Leaving her comfortable life behind, Elizabeth made the long journey north to a remote moorland village in Yorkshire to nurse her sister. After the death of Maria, Elizabeth assumed the role of second mother to her nephew and five nieces. She would never see Cornwall again, but instead dedicated her life to her new family: the Bronts of Haworth, to whom she was known as Aunt Branwell. In this first ever biography of Elizabeth Branwell, we see at last the huge impact she had on Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bront, as well as on her nephew Branwell Bront who spiralled out of control away from her calming influence. It was a legacy in Aunt Branwell's will that led directly to the Bront books we love today, but her influence on their lives and characters was equally important. As opposed to the stern aunt portrayed by Mrs. Gaskell in her biography of Charlotte Bront, we find a kind hearted woman who sacrificed everything for the children she came to love. This revealing book also looks at the Branwell family, and how their misfortunes mirrored that of the Bronts, and we find out what happened to the Bront cousin who emigrated to America, and in doing so uncover the closest living relatives to the Bront sisters today.

Leyland's 1886 work “The Brontë Family”, a detailed investigation into the lives and works of the seminal English literary family. The Brontës were a famous literary family during the nineteenth century synonymous with the West Riding area of Yorkshire, England. The sisters, Charlotte (1816–1855), Emily (1818–1848), and Anne (1820–1849), are now world-famous poets and novelists; and their father, Patrick Brontë (1777 – 1861), was also an author. Numerous novels produced by this family have since become classics of English literature. “The Brontë Family” constitutes a must-read for those with an interest in the work of the three sisters, and is not to be missed by students of English literature or its history. Contents include: “Early Circumstances Of The Brontës”, “Mrs. Brontë”, “The Rev. Patrick Brontë”, “The Girlhood Of The Brontë Sisters”, “Branwell's Boyhood”, “The Literary Tastes Of The Children”, “Youth”, etc. This volume offers fantastic insights into the people behind the literature, exploring their letters, relationships, friends, and more in wonderful detail. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this classic volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition for the enjoyment of literature lovers now and for years to come.
