Curtis. The Journal of Julius Rodman is a fictionalised account of the first travels across the Western Wilderness, over the barrier of the Rocky Mountains. This extraordinary journal details events of the most surprising nature, and recounts the unparalleled vicissitudes and adventures experienced by a handful of men in a country which, until then, had never been explored by 'civilised man'. The first six installments of this novel were published in the Burton's Gentleman's Magazine in 1839-40, when the author was a contributing editor of the journal. When Poe left his job in June 1840, he refused to continue the novel. Extracts of Poe's work infamously appeared in 1839 Congress papers citing his account of the first passage across the Rockies by 'civilised man' as authentic. Proving to be one of Poe's more elaborate hoaxes, this reaction illuminates the extent to which his literary realism and acute attention to detail strikes a convincing background to the hero's travels.

Book excerpt: Never heard of this story by Edgar Allan Poe (1809-49), America's renowned master of Gothic horror, suspense and detective stories -- and author of some of the most beautiful poems ever written? You are not alone. It was published anonymously in Burton's Gentleman Magazine, and not until many years after Poe's death letters were found, written by his own hand and proving his authorship beyond doubt. Scholars are fully aware that this is authored by Poe himself, but still it is often omitted from editions with such titles as Complete Tales... The Journal of Julius Rodman (1840) tells the story of the first expedition over the Rocky Mountains, which was still largely unexplored during Poe's lifetime. Ljfe-threatening adventures, encounters with isolated tribes of Indians, strange animals and hints of a lost world... It was an attempt by Poe to write a serialized novel, but only six installments were published. Still it is one of Poe's most lengthy work of fiction, only surpassed by his novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym (1838).

Book excerpt: The only novel completed by the master of the short-story form, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym relates the rollicking adventures of a boy from Nantucket as he boards a succession of ships and travels in the farthest regions of the southern hemisphere. On the way, he experiences the hardships and dangers of life at sea, surviving a violent storm, stowing away on a whaling ship and being reduced to the most extreme measures by hunger. The result is a yarn as thrilling as any of Poe's horror stories.Alongside Pym's exploits, this collection includes many celebrated tales, such as 'The Cask of Amontillado', 'The Gold Bug' and 'Hop-Frog', as well as Poe's second, unfinished novel, The Journal of Julius Rodman, all of which bear witness to the narrative genius of one of America's greatest storytellers.

It begins as a standard sea adventure but descends into Poe's signature dark style, as its protagonist, Arthur Gordon Pym, encounters mutiny and cannibalism. A stowaway on the whaling ship Grampus, Pym finds more adventure than he bargained for once at sea. Poe drew on his own seafaring experiences while writing and The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket went on to be cited as an influence by Herman Melville and Jules Verne.

Book excerpt: The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (1838) is the only complete novel written by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. The work relates the tale of the young Arthur Gordon Pym, who stows away aboard a whaling ship called the Grampus. Various adventures and misadventures befall Pym, including shipwreck, mutiny, and cannibalism, before he is saved by the crew of the Jane Guy. Aboard this vessel, Pym and a sailor named Dirk Peters continue their adventures farther south. Docking on land, they encounter hostile black-skinned natives before escaping back to the ocean. The novel ends abruptly as Pym and Peters continue toward the South Pole. The story starts out as a fairly conventional adventure at sea, but it becomes increasingly strange and hard to classify. Poe, who intended to present a realistic story, was inspired by several real-life accounts of sea voyages, and drew heavily from Jeremiah N. Reynolds and referenced the Hollow Earth theory. He also drew from his own experiences at sea. Analyses of the novel often focus on the potential autobiographical elements as well as hints of racism and the symbolism in the final lines of the work. Difficulty in finding literary success early in his short story-writing career inspired Poe to pursue writing a longer work. A few serialized installments of The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket were first published in the Southern Literary Messenger, though never completed. The full novel was published in July 1838 in two volumes. Some critics responded negatively to the work for being too gruesome and for cribbing heavily from other works, while others praised its exciting adventures. Poe himself later called it "a very silly book." In the years since its publication, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket became an influential work, notably for Herman Melville and Jules Verne.... Edgar Allan Poe ( born Edgar Poe; January 19, 1809 - October 7, 1849) was an American writer, editor, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism in the United States and American literature as a whole, and he was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story. Poe is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction.[1] He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.[2] Poe was born in Boston, the second child of two actors. His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Thus orphaned, the child was taken in by John and Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia. They never formally adopted him, but Poe was with them well into young adulthood. Tension developed later as John Allan and Edgar repeatedly clashed over debts, including those incurred by gambling, and the cost of secondary education for the young man. Poe attended the University of Virginia for one semester but left due to lack of money. Poe quarreled with Allan over the funds for his education and enlisted in the Army in 1827 under an assumed name. It was at this time that his publishing career began, albeit humbly, with the anonymous collection Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian." With the death of Frances Allan in 1829, Poe and Allan reached a temporary rapprochement. However, Poe later failed as an officer cadet at West Point, declaring a firm wish to be a poet and writer, and he ultimately parted ways with John Allan....

This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Edgar Allan Poe was originally published in 1840. Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1809, Poe became an orphan at a very early age. After being taken in by a couple in Richmond, he spent a brief spell in the United Kingdom before returning to enrol at the University of Virginia. Poe struggled for many years to make a living as a writer and frequently had to move city to stay in employment as a critic. Even for his greatest success, 'The Raven', he only received $9 and, although becoming a household name, his financial position remained far from stable. Poe died in 1849, aged just 40, yet his legacy is a formidable one: He is seen today as one of the greatest practitioners of Gothic and detective fiction that ever lived, and popular culture is replete with references to him. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.
