Excerpt: ... by Giovanni Calamia a noble Rhodian at his own expense, as a receptacle for the miracle working portrait of Our Lady of Damascus, which according to tradition is the work of St. Luke, and which still remains here. The picture of the Resurrection is by S. Erardi. The Church Of.the Madonna Del Pilar In this little but elegant church there are several pictures of considerable merit. The orie over the high altar is by the illustrious Erardi, and is an admirable representation of the Virgin and Child, with the title of the Pillar. There is a good picture of St. Lawrence at one side of the same altar in the style of G. Ribera, but our attention is especially arrested by a small crucifix painted on copper in the sacristy, remarkable for that extreme delicacy of touch which characterises the style of Guido Reni. There is also in the sacristy a picture of S. Vincent de Paul by Dr. Michael Bellanti. The Church Of The Nuns Of St. Catherine Was built in 1766. The principal pic-ture (the presentation of the B. V. M.) is in the style of Arrigo Arnaux. Most of the other pictures are modern productions by Signori P. Paolo and Raffaele Caruana, and represent various Saints. The Church or B. V. M. Of Liesse Was built in 1740. The principal picture which is one of the B. V. M. with this title, together with the legend of the three Knights of Liesse is one of the best paintings of Arnaud. The Parish Church Oe S. Pubblio, Bishop And Martyr, Floriana Bishop Fr. Paolo Alferan laid the foundation stone of this church on August 2nd H33. The architect was the celebrated Giuseppe Bonnici. It has been since enlarged in the same style by Maestro Carmelo Spiteri, under the superintendence of Sig. Paolo Attard. The picture at the high altar of the Martyrdom of S....

Book excerpt: Two personages named Lazarus can be identified in the New Testament - one being Lazarus of Bethany; the other Lazarus the Beggar of the parable. The available relevant texts in the New Testament appear to give very little background information about the historical Lazarus. However, much can be gleaned by analysing the available information in the light of historical, archaeological and biblical sources. There is even less known about the historical Lazarus of Bethany after Jesus'' resurrection. The link between leprosy and St. Lazarus further led to the development of cults with associated iconography. The present publication is the result of a Workshop organised by the Grand Priory of the Maltese Islands of the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem. The Workshop was organised with the aim of investigating the personage of the historical Lazarus and to outline the cults that developed around him during the Medieval Period.
Book Synopsis The Late Medieval Art and Architecture of the Maltese Islands by : Mario Buhagiar
Download or read book The Late Medieval Art and Architecture of the Maltese Islands written by Mario Buhagiar and published by Midsea Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents us with a comprehensive point of departure for the study of artistic developments in the Late Middle Ages, from the Norman Conquest at the turn of the twelfth century to the coming of the Knights in 1530. This book shows us that Late Medieval Malta was not an artistic desert, that patronage in Mdina was surprisingly well-informed, and that the Renaissance reached Malta before the coming of the Knights. Architecture, however, lagged behind, and the stylistic and technical innovations reflected the conservatism of an insular society. Through the art and architecture of that period, Professor Buhagiar outlines the Christianization and Latinization process that moved the islands away from a Muslim and North African bias, to a South European sphere of influence. The author's many years of meticulous research and academic activity have resulted in an excellently presented book that can be enjoyed by both the academic and the general reader. Mario Buhagiar is Professor of History of Art and Head of the History of Art Programme at the University of Malta, which he was responsible for establishing in 1988. The author is also responsible for the Late Roman and Byzantine Catacombs and Related Burial Places in the Maltese Islands, and The Iconography of the Maltese Islands 1400-1900: Painting, as well as numerous articles in various journals, both local and foreign.

Book Synopsis Baroque Painting in Malta by : Keith Sciberras
Download or read book Baroque Painting in Malta written by Keith Sciberras and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Baroque painting in Malta reflects that of the Italian peninsula and, in many ways, can be directly integrated within it. In terms of quantity, the island was impressively prolific. In terms of quality, works vary tremendously. There were, however, celebrated instances when the island was significantly at the forefront of stylistic development. A handful of Maltese artists worked beyond the island's shores and some, like the painter Francesco Noletti (il Fieravino), made major breakthroughs in Rome, the 'mother' of all cities. The island's small size also meant that it could be easily conditioned by one or two major artists working there. Therefore, a talented artist, Maltese or foreign, could exert tremendous influence on the stylistic currents that prevailed. The story of Baroque painting in Malta is thus marked by such artists. Contents: The pre-Baroque Years; Caravaggio; Leonello Spada; Caravaggism in Malta: Imported Works; Caravaggism in Malta: Copies after Caravaggio and Works executed in Malta; The mid- eventeenth century; Mattia Preti; The Bottega of Mattia Preti and Giuseppe d'Arena; The Erardi Family of Artists: Stefano and Alessio; The early eighteenth century; Gio Nicola Buhagiar and Enrico Regnaud; Mid-eighteenth century works by foreign artists; Francesco Zahra; Antoine Favray; Rocco Buhagiar; Giuseppe Grech; The late eighteenth century and the end of the Baroque.
