Book excerpt: In this thought-provoking collection of essays, Jones explores the relationship between faith and social reform, arguing that true religion must be informed by a commitment to social justice and the common good. His insights and observations are as relevant today as they were when this book was first published over a century ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Working Faith of the Social Reformer and Other Essays The essays and lectures in this volume have already appeared in print: "The Working Faith of the Social Reformer" and "The Moral Aspect of the Fiscal Question" in The Hibbert Journal; "The Child and Heredity" in a volume of The Crown Theological Library, entitled The Child and Religion; "Idealism and Politics" in The Contemporary Review; "Social and Individual Evolution" in The New World; and "Social Responsibilities" in a pamphlet published by James MacLehose & Sons. I wish to express my hearty gratitude to the Editors and Publishers of these periodicals for their kindness in allowing me to collect the papers together for republication. Most of the essays were originally written in response to the incitement of some quite temporary circumstance; but they all turn around principles which, if they are valid, are of cardinal importance for our thinking and practice in social matters. The changes I have made are both less numerous and less important than I could have wished. In particular I could have gladly eliminated some repetitions. Book Synopsis Liberalism and Sociology by : Stefan Collini
Download or read book Liberalism and Sociology written by Stefan Collini and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1979-07-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging book, Stefan Collini deals with the relationship between Liberalism and sociology in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Britain. He discusses in particular the crucial contributions of L. T. Hobhouse, the leading Liberal political theorist of the period who is also generally regarded as the 'Founding Father' of British sociology. Based upon extensive original research, the book draws together themes from three fields which are normally pursued in historiographical isolation. It examines the moral and intellectual inspiration of the New Liberalism which came to dominate Edwardian politics; explores the nature of the systematic political philosophy in this period; and shows how the contemporary understanding of sociology was bound up with attempts to provide a theoretical and historical grounding for the belief in Progress, especially in opposition to Social Darwinist and other biological social theories. Throughout, the intellectual context necessary to a properly historical understanding of these ideas is reconstructed in detail and particular attention if paid to the structure of the moral and political discourse of the time.

Download or read book British Idealism written by Colin Tyler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bertrand Russell, G. E. Moore, and other analytic philosophers of the early 20th century claimed to depart from the British idealists who dominated philosophical debate from the 1870s onwards. The nature and extent of this departure is now widely questioned as philosophers return to the writings of Bernard Bosanquet, F. H. Bradley, R. G. Collingwood, T. H. Green, J. M. E. McTaggart, and others. Nowadays, the British idealist movement is mostly remembered for its seminal contributions to metaphysics, ethics, and political philosophy. The contributors to this volume explore some of the movement’s other, equally-insightful, contributions to the philosophies of language, aesthetics and emotions. These chapters cover core philosophical issues including the relationship between the speech communities and the general will; the role of emotions in the Absolute; key differences between leading British idealists on the relationships between emotions and relations; the nature of love; the historical re-enactment of imagination and creativity; expressivism in art; and the actual idealism of the British idealists’ Italian counterparts. This book was originally published as a special issue of the British Journal of the History of Philosophy.
