Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Reginald Bretnor (1911-1992) was never a prolific writer -- he wrote only a handful of books and about 100 short stories (and more than 120 short-short "Feghoots" under his Grendel Briarton pseudonym) -- over a 45-year writing career. In addition to wars, weaponry, and science fiction, Bretnor's broad interests included cats. (And puns. Did we mention the horrible puns?) These subjects are all touched on in this collection. A sly sense of humor permeates Bretnor’s fiction, and as we work to digitize his complete body of work and present it to readers in a series of Reginald Bretnor Megapacks, we know you’ll have fun reading it all. Included in this volume are: SUGAR PLUM GNURRS COME FROM THE VOODVORK OUT CAT MAYBE JUST A LITTLE ONE UNKNOWN THINGS BUG-GETTER AUNT'S FLIGHT DR. The San Francisco Chronicle said: "The book is very likely to recruit a whole host of new readers.... A freely argued, objective, highly individualistic study by ten writers of the origins, advances and future prospects of science fiction as a spontaneous living literature."The essays are grouped in three sections: "Science Fiction Today," "Science Fiction as Literature," and "Science Fiction, Science, and Modern Man." This classic symposium is a fit companion to Mr. Bretnor's later books Science Fiction, Today and Tomorrow and The Craft of Science Fiction. This new edition adds a preface by the editor, a chapter of notes and corrections, and a complete index.Table of Contents- Retrospect and Prospect by Reginald Bretnor- Preface to the First Edition by Reginald Bretnor- Science Fiction Today- The Place of Science Fiction by John W. He was the son of a Latvian Jewish banker and an English governess. The family moved to Japan in 1917, then to San Diego, California, in 1920. Bretnor, whose name was taken from the maiden name of his maternal grandmother and who many acquaintances thought to be the perfect English gentleman, never left the United States in the 72 years he lived here and did not once set foot in Great Britain. He is most widely known in the science fiction field for his humorous "Feghoot" pun stories featuring time-traveler Ferdinand Feghoot. He also published a handful of science fiction novels and a single mystery novel (A Killing in Swords) in addition to more than a hundred short stories in both the mystery and science fiction genres. In addition to fiction, he wrote extensively on cats and swords (he was an expert on Japanese swords), and both elements feature in many of his works.

Download or read book Uses of Comparative Mythology written by Kenneth L. Golden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-14 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection, first published in 1992, offers critical-interpretive essays on various aspects of the work of Joseph Campbell (1904-1987), one of a very few international experts on myth. Joseph Campbell examines myths and mythologies from a comparative point of view, and he stresses those similarities among myths the world over as they suggest an existing, transcendent unity of all humankind. His interpretations foster an openness, even a generous appreciation of, all myths; and he attempts to generate a broad, sympathetic understanding of the role of these 'stories' in human history, in our present-day lives, and in the possibilities of our future.
