Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city has secrets kept in the shadows. Venice, 16th century. The staggering wealth of Venice contrasts the brutal lives of those in the ghetto. Opportunistic merchants arrive to make their fortune. Deception, malice and perversion thrive, leading to the emergence of a dark society: The Wolves of Venice. Drawn into the Wolves' plots are the innocents – including Marco Gianetti, assistant to Tintoretto; Ira Tabat, a Jewish merchant; Giorgio Gabal, an artist's apprentice; and Giovanni Spoletto, the doomed castrato – all manipulated by the likes of Pietro Aretino, the courtesan Tita Boldini and the spy Adamo Baptista. The lives of these characters criss-cross one another. Their destinies intermingle in a Venice corrupted by spies lingering in the shadows, working for paymasters that change allegiance with the wind. As the betrayals, murders and tragedies continue, will anyone be able to bring the Wolves of Venice to justice? Praise for Alex Connor: 'Alex Connor is a master at keeping the pace moving [and] keeps you turning the pages even though you promised yourself to put the light out fifteen minutes ago!' HISTORICAL NOVEL REVIEW. 'A deep knowledge of the art world is displayed by Connor... The pace is steady with spikes of frantic action... A marvellous twist at the end' CRIMESQUAD. 'A truly superb book... The end is totally unexpected. Highly recommended' EURO CRIME. 'The book sped by and entertained me immensely. I will be without doubt picking up the other books by this author, finding a good thriller writer is hard, finding a great one is nigh on impossible' PARMENION BOOKS. 'Convincing characters and a fast-moving plot lift this above the pack of mystery thrillers centered on an old work of art' PUBLISHERS WEEKLY.

Book Synopsis The Teleportation Accident by : Ned Beauman
Download or read book The Teleportation Accident written by Ned Beauman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-listed for the 2012 Man Booker Prize, The Teleportation Accident is a hilarious sci-fi noir about sex, Satan, and teleportation devices. When you haven't had sex in a long time, it feels like the worst thing that could ever happen. If you're living in Germany in the 1930s, it probably isn't. But that's no consolation to Egon Loeser, whose carnal misfortunes will push him from the experimental theaters of Berlin to the absinthe bars of Paris to the physics laboratories of Los Angeles, trying all the while to solve two mysteries: Was it really a deal with Satan that claimed the life of his hero, Renaissance set designer Adriano Lavicini, creator of the so-called Teleportation Device? And why is it that a handsome, clever, modest guy like him can't-just once in a while-get himself laid? Ned Bauman has crafted a stunningly inventive, exceptionally funny, dangerously unsteady and (largely) coherent novel about sex, violence, space, time, and how the best way to deal with history is to ignore it.

Download or read book The Unjust "Justice" written by Edward Castle and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-12-21 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his late teens, Henry Carmel was stricken with schizophrenia—a life-altering mental illness characterized by tormenting voices, impaired judgment, and acute paranoia. In 1996, Henry was attacked by a huge dog. Fearing for his life, he panicked and killed the animal. Despite test results and reports supplied by an unbiased veterinary pathologist, the corrupt county veterinarian contradicted the pathologist and aggravated the incident with a false theory. At the hands of a power-hungry deputy district attorney (DDA), Henry was prosecuted. The jury remained unaware of his illness, so he was sentenced to prison rather than the hospitalization he needed. Expecting acquittal, the defense agreed to the nondisclosure of the illness. As desired by the DDA, Henry was sentenced to serve an exaggerated prison term. When his sentence was complete, his illness was disclosed. He was certified as a mentally disordered offender (MDO) and kept hospitalized year after year. In the years after his trial, Henry’s condition improved; however, at annual hearings the DDA and judges ignored Henry’s successes and extended his confinement each year. This was abusive and unjust. No socially accepted rules of ethics were followed. The Unjust “Justice” is the story of a young man who, because of the social stigma that prevails over individuals plagued with schizophrenia, lost his freedom within an abusive system of injustice.

Download or read book Of Wolves and Men written by Barry Lopez and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978, this classic exploration of humanity’s complex relationship with and understanding of wolves returns with a new afterword by the author. Humankind's relationship with the wolf is the sum of a spectrum of responses ranging from fear to admiration and affection. Lopez’s classic, careful study has won praise from a wide range of reviewers and improved the way books on wild animals are written. Of Wolves and Men explores the uneasy interaction between wolves and civilization over the centuries, and the wolf's prominence in our thoughts about wild creatures. Drawing upon an impressive array of literature, history, science, and mythology as well as extensive personal experience with captive and free-ranging wolves, Lopez argues for the wolf's preservation and immerses the reader in its sensory world, creating a compelling portrait of the wolf both as a real animal and as imagined by different kinds of men. A scientist might perceive the wolf as defined by research data, while an Eskimo hunter sees a family provider much like himself. For many Native Americans the wolf is also a spiritual symbol, a respected animal that can strengthen the individual and the community. With irresistible charm and elegance, Of Wolves and Men celebrates careful scientific fieldwork, dispels folklore that has enabled the Western mind to demonize wolves, explains myths, and honors indigenous traditions, allowing us to understand how this remarkable animal has become so prominent for so long in the human heart.

Alpha Andreas Baron loves Gerwalta Faust, even if she is his natural enemy, and he will have none other for his mate. If only he can convince her of that before the Grand Matron awards his beloved's hand to another... Gerwalta knows that to give in to desire would sentence Andreas to death. What she feels is irrelevant. She will not condemn him by falling for his attempts at seduction. When she's given a mission that will take her far from the Black Forest, Gerwalta pushes forward, thankful for the distance. Until she discovers that Andreas will be part of the party, that is. Their purpose: capture a band of seven deadly vampires whose schemes would place werewolves and vampires on opposite battlefields for Europe's two great empires. The true danger, however, arises when the wolf and the watcher, away from the influence of clan and pack, cross the point of no return, changing the course of the supernatural world forever...
Book Synopsis The Decameron Fourth Day in Perspective by : Michael Sherberg
Download or read book The Decameron Fourth Day in Perspective written by Michael Sherberg and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, part of the Lectura Boccaccii series organized by the American Boccaccio Association, offers close readings by top scholars of Day Four of the Decameron. As fans of the Decameron know, the Fourth Day opens with an important intervention in which the author defends his project against his critics, which coincides with a significant change in tone as the subject matter turns to stories with unhappy endings. The contributors approach the stories from a variety of perspectives, including the linguistic, philosophical, anthropological, and literary historical. These fresh readings of stories that are nearly seven hundred years old testify to the enduring power of Boccaccio’s masterpiece to speak to new audiences and to find compelling relevance even at a great distance from its immediate medieval context.

Download or read book The Wolf written by Ian Convery and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New insights into the changing human attitudes towards wild nature through the depiction of wolves in human culture and heritage. Few animals arouse such strong opinion as the wolf. It occupies a contested, ambiguous, yet central role in human culture and heritage. It appears as both an inspirational emblem of the wild and an embodiment of evil. Offering a mirror to different human attitudes, beliefs, and values, the wolf is, arguably, the species that plays the greatest role in shaping our views on what nature is or should be. North America and, more recently, Europe have witnessed a remarkable return of the grey wolf (Canis lupus, and its close relative the Eurasian wolf, Canis lupus lupus) to eco-systems. The essays collected here explore aspects of this recovery, and consider the history, literature and myth surrounding this iconic species. There are chapters on wolf taxonomy, including the coywolf, the red wolf, and the many faces of the dingo. We also meet the Tasmanian wolf and encounter Nazi Werewolves from Outer Space. The book explores the challenges of separating fact from fiction and superstition, and our willingness to co-exist with large carnivores in the twenty-first century. Biologists, historians, anthropologists, cultural theorists, conservationists and museologists will all find riches in the detail presented in this wolf collection.
