Book Synopsis Mystery Women, Volume Three (Revised) by : Colleen Barnett
Download or read book Mystery Women, Volume Three (Revised) written by Colleen Barnett and published by Sourcebooks, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-12-31 with total page 1090 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like other fictional characters, female sleuths may live in the past or the future. They may represent current times with some level of reality or shape their settings to suit an agenda. There are audiences for both realism and escapism in the mystery novel. It is interesting, however, to compare the fictional world of the mystery sleuth with the world in which readers live. Of course, mystery readers do not share one simplistic world. They live in urban, suburban, and rural areas, as do the female heroines in the books they read. They may choose a book because it has a familiar background or because it takes them to places they long to visit. Readers may be rich or poor; young or old; conservative or liberal. So are the heroines. What incredible choices there are today in mystery series! This three-volume encyclopedia of women characters in the mystery novel is like a gigantic menu. Like a menu, the descriptions of the items that are provided are subjective. Volume 3 of Mystery Women as currently updated adds an additional 42 sleuths to the 500 plus who were covered in the initial Volume 3. These are more recently discovered sleuths who were introduced during the period from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 1999. This more than doubles the number of sleuths introduced in the 1980s (298 of whom were covered in Volume 2) and easily exceeded the 347 series (and some outstanding individuals) described in Volume 1, which covered a 130-year period from 1860-1979. It also includes updates on those individuals covered in the first edition; changes in status, short reviews of books published since the first edition through December 31, 2008.

Book Synopsis Лягушки, Просящие Царя by : Иван Андреевич Крылов
Download or read book Лягушки, Просящие Царя written by Иван Андреевич Крылов and published by Russian Information Service. This book was released on 2010 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fables of Ivan Krylov are rich fonts of Russian cultural wisdom and experience - reading and understanding them is vital to grasping the Russian worldview. This edition of 62 of Krylov's tales presents them side-by-side in English and Russian. The wonderfully lyrical translations by Lydia Razran Stone are accompanied by original, whimsical color illustrations by Katya Korobkina. Krylov's fables represent a combination of satire, rational moralizing, and details of Russian rural and provincial life, with an admixture of lyricism and references to historical events and figures. As a source of phrases and aphorisms that have entered the Russian language, Krylov's influence upon his native tongue is roughly analogous to that of Shakespeare upon English. This BILINGUAL, colorfully illustrated edition is an ideal gift for language learners, adoptees and Russophiles of all ages.

Book excerpt: Available Digitally for the First Time A cat, a mouse, and two corpses equal a menagerie of murder for actress turned cat-sitting sleuth Alice Nestleton… Dubbed “one of Manhattan’s finest little-known actresses,” beautiful cat-sitter turned sleuth Alice Nestleton has been called into action again. This time the New York City cops have put her onto a case that’s right up her alley. It begins when a routine murder investigation uncovers a string of clues that tie up fifteen years of unsolved homicides. The common thread: a cat-loving serial killer who preys on feline owners, whisks away the startled pet, and leaves a mouse toy at the scene as his calling card. This is enough to put Alice hot on the trail for more clues—a trail that moves from the secretive small towns of the Adirondacks, to the pages of a book of nursery rhymes, to the eerie caverns of Central Park. There Alice finds herself face to face with a mysterious cult whose devotees dabble in cat-worship—and murder. Curl up with A Cat Tells Two Tales, available October 2012 in trade paperback from Obsidian.

As the only Second Daughter born in centuries, Red has one purpose - to be sacrificed to the Wolf in the Wood in order to save her kingdom. Red is almost relieved to go. Plagued by a dangerous power she can't control, at least she knows that in the Wilderwood, she can't hurt those she loves. Again. But the legends lie. The Wolf is a man, not a monster. Her magic is a calling, not a curse. And if she doesn't learn how to use it, the Wilderwood - and her world - will be lost forever.
