Book excerpt: Widely regarded as the greatest German literary figure of the modern era, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a prolific author of novels, epic and lyric poetry, prose, plays, scientific treatises and autobiography. A literary celebrity by the age of 25, Goethe achieved enormous success with his first novel, ‘The Sorrows of Young Werther’. Inspiring the imagination of a generation, it was the first novel of the Sturm und Drang movement, which exalted nature, feeling, and human individualism, seeking to overthrow Rationalism. ‘Faust’, Goethe’s two-part dramatic masterpiece, is regarded as the supreme work of his later years and is often cited as Germany’s greatest contribution to world literature. Based on the traditional theme of the eponymous scholar making a pact with the demon Mephistopheles, the drama explores themes that encapsulate the fullest expression of the European Romantic movement, to which Goethe was an early and major contributor. This comprehensive eBook presents Goethe’s complete fictional works, with numerous illustrations, rare texts, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. Raised on a New Jersey farm, he graduated high school at 16 and earned both a bachelor's degree from Rutgers University and a private pilot's license. In 1942, he joined the Navy as an aviation cadet, earning his wings and an officer's commission in the Naval Reserve. He became proficient in three of the Navy's high-performance combat aircraft: the SBD Dauntless dive-bomber, the F6F Hellcat fighter and the F4U Corsair fighter. In 1945, he deployed to the Pacific aboard the carrier USS Bunker Hill and flew combat missions over Japan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Drawing on Nist's letters and personal papers and official Navy documents, historian Bryan J. Dickerson tells the story of his great uncle's life and service during World War II.

Book excerpt: Al Sheithuman explores the creation of the world in a broad and imaginative way and is clearly distinguished by the level of environmental diversity, culture, and history. It recounts what the defenseless hero suffers in front of the dictatorial authorities and the wars they ignite, turning human life in Iraq into a continuous holocaust that burns people and values, making the place and life itself unsafe. Escaping danger and death are pure coincidences caused by unseen preordained forces. It protects those it wants to protect and kills those who do not have the ability to survive. Critic Jennifer Bacani commented, “The psychological elements combined with the more humane themes that revolve around war, identity, fighting harsh conditions, imperialism, and the complexities of the Arab world, made for thought-provoking and entertaining reading. The main character is described in a way that enables the reader to learn about his motivations, backstory, and feelings.” She added, “However, I did not find any filler parts or narrations, nor did I feel like I was being dragged along. Overall, an interesting story, about the cruelty, beauty and fragility of human nature.” About the Author Dheyab Shahin is an Iraqi poet, novelist, and literature critic. Born in Babylon, he has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in journalism. He has published thirty-five books including poetry, novels, and criticism. He has worked as a self-employed writer as well as a literary reviewer for poetry and narrative texts in the Ministry of Culture and Youth in the UAE, and published many articles in Iraqi and Arab newspapers and magazines, such Al-Ittihad, Azzaman, Al Khaleej, and others. He was honored twice by the Sharjah Department of Culture and Media in UAE, where he was awarded two certificates in recognition in 2012 and 2014 for his books Aesthetics of Poetry and Image Semiotic in the UAE Cultural Press. Shahin was selected by the UAE Ministry of Culture to represent UAE in the field of criticism at the International Assilah Festival in Morocco in 2010. He participated in the Arab Indian Festival in Abu Dhabi in 2009, and he participated in the thirteenth and fourteenth round of the Marbed, which is a famous International Iraqi Poetic Festival in Basra in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

Book excerpt: The nineteen interdisciplinary essays assembled in WORD AND MUSIC STUDIES I were first presented in 1997 at the founding conference of the International Association for Word and Music Studies (WMA) in Graz, Austria. Diverse in subject matter, theoretical orientation, critical approach, and interpretive strategy, they share a keen scholarly interest in contemporary word-music reflection. Registering the impact of cultural studies on word-music relations, as manifested in the 'new musicology' and other 'historicist' approaches, the volume aims to assess the entire field of word and music studies, to define its subject, objectives, and methodology and to describe the field's state of the art. Within the broader context of generic, structural, performative, and ideological considerations concerning the manifold interrelations between literature and music, contributors explore wide-ranging topics, such as the vexing question of terminology (e.g. 'word and music', 'melopoetics', 'interart', 'intermedial', 'transmedial'); inquiry into the meaning, narrative potential, and verbalization of music; analysis of texted music (the Lied and opera) and instrumental music; and discussion of individual issues (e.g. 'ekphrasis', 'musicalization of fiction', 'word music', and 'verbal music') and interart loanwords (e.g. 'narrativity', 'counterpoint', and 'leitmotif').
