Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the Rainbow" exploded into worldwide fame upon its performance by Judy Garland in the MGM film musical The Wizard of Oz (1939). Voted the greatest song of the twentieth century in a 2000 survey, it is a masterful, delicate balance of sophistication and child-like simplicity in which composer Harold Arlen and lyricist E. Y. "Yip" Harburg poignantly captured the hope and anxiety harbored by Dorothy's character. In Arlen and Harburg's Over the Rainbow, author Walter Frisch traces the history of this song from its inception during the development of The Wizard of Oz's screenplay, to its various reinterpretations over the course of the twentieth century. Through analysis of the song's music and lyrics, this Oxford Keynotes volume provides a close reading of the piece while examining the evolution of its meaning as it traversed widely varying cultural contexts. From its adoption as a jazz standard by generations of pianists, to its contribution to Judy Garland's role as a gay icon, to its reemergence as a chart-topping recording by Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, "Over the Rainbow" continues to engage audiences and performers alike in surprising ways. Featuring a companion website with audio and video supplements, this book leaves no path unexplored as it succeeds in capturing the extent of this song's impact on the world.

Nor has any book explored how such writings might actually transform contemporary theological reflections on race and sexuality. This book remedies these gaps by constructing a rainbow theology around the theme of bridging or mediation. Rainbow Theology is the first book to reflect upon the theological significance of the intersections of race and queer sexuality across multiple ethnic and cultural groups. This is particularly important in light of the current polarizing debates over issues of race, sexuality, and religion within churches and communities of faith around the world.

Book excerpt: Over the Rainbow shows how Dorothy's passage from Kansas to Oz and back again recapitulates paradigmatic stories of both America and Christianity. Defining human identity on three symbolic levels (individual, collective, and cosmic), Nathanson shows that The Wizard of Oz has come to be a "secular myth."

Spielmann and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The Rainbow Book’ is a wonderful collection of children’s stories, written by M. H. Spielmann. It includes the tales of: ‘Adventures in Wizard Land’ (illustrated by Arthur Rackham), ‘The Little Picture Girl’ (Hugh Thomson), ‘The Sleeping Beauty’s Dream’ (Bernard Partridge), ‘The Gamekeeper’s Daughter’ (Lewis Baumer), ‘Cedric’s Unaccountable Adventure’ (Harry Rountree), ‘Father Christmas at Home’ (Arthur Rackham) and many more. Marion Harry Alexander Spielmann (1858 – 1948) was a prolific Victorian art critic and scholar, who was the editor of various magazines as well as a celebrated biographer. His works are still very much in demand, celebrated for their imagination and whimsicality. This book contains a selection of illustrations from some of the greatest artists of the Golden Age of Illustration. It showcases the drawings of Arthur Rackham, Hugh Thompson, Bernard Partridge, Lewis Baumer, Harry Rountree and C. Wilhelm. Although all fine artists in their own right, Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is by far the most famous – whose work is quite simply, unparalleled. Throughout his career, he developed a unique style, combining haunting humour with dream-like romance. Presented alongside the stories, his, and the other artists illustrations, further refine and elucidate Speilmann’s enthralling narratives.

Book excerpt: The day after seeing The Wizard of Oz in a movie theater, I went out and bought a copy of the book. I devoured it in one sitting, and was convinced that as wonderful as the movie was, the book was better still. I identified with Dorothy because both of us were orphans. She was sent out to Kansas to live with Em and Henry, and I was adopted by a couple from Brooklyn. And while I was always curious about who my birth parents were, I didn't do anything about it until I was married with three children. That's when I jumped on the yellow brick road and embarked on a search for my birth parents. (My story was published in the book Missing Links - The True Story of an Adoptee's Search for his Birth parents.) I mentioned Dorothy in my book, and subsequently used her journey in Oz as an analogy for the adoptee in search of his/her birth parents when I was invited to speak to adoption groups. "What," I often wondered, "ever happened to Dorothy when she grew up? And how did she get to Kansas in the first place?" I answered my own question in a book. Two books, for that matter: Dorothy - Looking for a Rainbow, a novel for young adults written in the third person covering Dorothy's life from shortly before her birth to the day she leaves her Kansas farm and goes out to find her own yellow brick road. And the other book, Dorothy - This Side of the Rainbow, written in the first person as a memoir covering Dorothy's entire life. Both books attempt to bring the character of Dorothy to life. Both books try to create a strong female character, one who can become a role model for, not only young women, but young men as well. The Dorothy that I created doesn't live in Oz. She lives in the real world during a real time in American History. (My Dorothy was born in 1878.) I aimed for historical accuracy. There are many actual events and real people in both of the Dorothy stories because I wanted Dorothy to be a part of "our" history. On one level my Dorothy stories are historical adventure stories in the tradition of Little House on the Prairie, Little Women, and Sarah, Plain and Tall. But the two books exist on a number of different levels, too. Both are personal search stories that unite actualization and spirituality. Both offer a parallel between the events in Oz and their possible origin in the real world. Both offer readers a chance to rekindle their own childhood and rediscover cherished memories of what it was like to dream.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the bedtime story by L. Frank Baum to the classic 1939 film, no story has captured the imaginations of generations of children — and adults — like The Wizard of Oz. The story of Dorothy’s journey through Oz, the colorful characters, places, songs, and dialogue have permeated popular culture around the world. The contributors to this volume take a very close look at The Wizard of Oz and ask the tough questions about this wonderful tale. They wonder if someone can possess a virtue without knowing it, and if the realm of Oz was really the dream or if Kansas was the dream. Why does water melt the Wicked Witch of the West and why does Toto seem to know what the other characters can’t seem to figure out? The articles included tackle these compelling questions and more, encouraging readers to have discussions of their own.
