Book Synopsis Institutional Designs for a Complex World by : Vinod K. Aggarwal
Download or read book Institutional Designs for a Complex World written by Vinod K. Aggarwal and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do established global institutions adapt to new circumstances? And how are the formation and evolution of regional institutions constrained by global ones? These questions, especially relevant for today's transforming Europe, are at the center of Institutional Designs for a Complex World. In this volume, respected scholars explore the possibilities for reconciling regional and global institutions by nesting one within the other, or by creating parallel institutions that deal with separate but related activities. The authors use an innovative theoretical framework to analyze the factors that lead to institutional bargaining games. They show how institutional innovation and the use of linkages might alter such games. Their essays, published here for the first time, examine the development of the Financial Support Fund, the European Economic Area, institutional competition and conflict in the Bosnian crisis, and problems in the European Monetary System. They reveal the advantages for international cooperation of both parallel and substantive institutional reconciliation, and provide a model for understanding institution-building and modification beyond the European experience.
Download or read book Country Risk written by Norbert Gaillard and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Country risk has been a key notion for economists, financiers, and investors. Norbert Gaillard defines this notion as “any macroeconomic, microeconomic, financial, social, political, institutional, judiciary, climatic, technological, or sanitary risk that affects (or could affect) an investor in a foreign country. Damages may materialize in several ways: financial losses; threat to the safety of the investing company’s employees, clients, or consumers; reputational damage; or loss of a market or supply source.” Chapter 1 introduces the key concepts. Chapter 2 investigates how country risk has evolved and manifested since the advent of the Pax Britannica in 1816. It describes the international political and economic environment and identifies the main obstacles to foreign investment. Chapter 3 documents the numerous forms that country risk may take and provides illustrations of them. Seven broad components of country risk are scrutinized in turn: international political risks; domestic political and institutional risks; jurisdiction risks; macroeconomic risks; microeconomic risks; sanitary, health, industrial, and environmental risks; and natural and climate risks. Chapter 4 focuses on sovereign risk. It presents the rating methodologies used by four raters; next, it measures and compares their performance (i.e., their ability to forecast sovereign defaults). Chapter 5 studies the risks likely to affect exporters, importers, foreign creditors of corporate entities, foreign shareholders, and foreign direct investors. It presents the rating methodologies used by seven raters and measures their track records in terms of anticipating eight types of shocks that reflect the main components of country risk analyzed in Chapter 3. This book will be most relevant to graduate students in economics as well as professional economists and international investors.

Book Synopsis The Hidden Hand of American Hegemony by : David E. Spiro
Download or read book The Hidden Hand of American Hegemony written by David E. Spiro and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1973 and 1980, the cost of crude oil rose suddenly and dramatically, precipitating convulsions in international politics. Conventional wisdom holds that international capital markets adjusted automatically and remarkably well: enormous amounts of money flowed into oil-rich states, and efficient markets then placed that new money in cash-poor Third World economies. David Spiro has followed the money trail, and the story he tells contradicts the accepted beliefs. Most of the sudden flush of new oil wealth didn't go to poor oil-importing countries around the globe. Instead, the United States made a deal with Saudi Arabia to sell it U.S. securities in secret, a deal resulting in a substantial portion of Saudi assets being held by the U.S. government. With this arrangement, the U.S. government violated its agreements with allies in the developed world. Spiro argues that American policymakers took this action to prop up otherwise intolerable levels of U.S. public debt. In effect, recycled OPEC wealth subsidized the debt-happy policies of the U.S. government as well as the debt-happy consumption of its citizenry.

Book Synopsis Southeast Asia (Routledge Revivals) by : Richard Higgott
Download or read book Southeast Asia (Routledge Revivals) written by Richard Higgott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this edited collection, first published in 1985, consider the competing theories of the nature of development and underdevelopment in Southeast Asia. Each chapter challenges the academic orthodoxies and dominant traditions of Southeast Asian studies, particularly in relation to orientalist history, behaviourist political science and development economics. Overall, the contributions offer an alternative framework for analysis, which considers the structural changes to the political economy of Southeast Asia, as well as the relationship between the state, economy and class at a domestic level. This is a fascinating collection, of value to students and academics with an interest in Southeast Asian politics, economics and history.
Book Synopsis Suharto's Cold War by : Mattias Fibiger
Download or read book Suharto's Cold War written by Mattias Fibiger and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-14 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book provides an introduction (from the perspective of Chan/Zen Studies) to the teachings of the key figure of Yuan-dynasty Chan: Zhongfeng Mingben. Zhongfeng was a leading student of Gaofeng Yuanmiao. At Gaofeng's death, Zhongfeng left the mountain and for many years resided in various small mountain hermitages (often called "Dwelling-in-the-Phantasmal Hermitages"). On occasion, he chose to live on a houseboat. He drew students from all over East Asia: Yunnan, Turfan, Mongol officials; Koreans, Japanese, and so forth. The primary focus is on illustrating Zhongfeng's Chan style via translation of selected works in his Chan records. The texts selected from his Chan records include the standard genres instructions to the assembly and dharma talks; the miscellany Night Conversations in a Mountain Hermitage (which covers such topics as the nature of the huatou; the relationship between the bodhisattva stages and Chan; numinous knowing versus false knowing, and so forth); one-hundred poems in imitation of the well-known collection Hanshan's Poems (Poems of Cold Mountain); admonitions on cross-legged sitting Chan, and so forth. Zhongfeng's wider social world, cultural context, and idiosyncratic calligraphy are addressed only in passing"--
