They get caught in turn, and imprisoned in a very traditional dungeon. The black magus is seriously lacking in imagination, but then, he wasn't a magus until quite recently and is still learning the ropes. Being evil takes practice. Well, that's what happens when you get caught up in the affairs of wizards. And when Sandy's uncle turns out to be a good magician, and tells them how he joined the illuminati, the magicians club, it can be only a matter of time before Sandy becomes a properly qualified Witch...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1947 a group of Yoruba-speaking fishermen who had been persecuted because of their religious beliefs founded their own community in order to worship in peace. Although located in an impoverished part of Nigeria, within a few years the village enjoyed remarkable economic success. This was partly because the fishermen held all goods in common, pooled the profits in the community treasury, and attempted to reduce the importance of the family and marriage. After about a generation the utopia began to fall apart. The early religious zeal faded, private enterprise replaced communalism, and the family became strong once more. In an attempt to explain the initial success and eventual decline of the utopia, the author compares it with neighbouring villages that embraced similar religious beliefs but did not enjoy the same economic success. He sets the problem firmly in a broad comparative framework and draws the implications for theories of development, especially Weber’s Protestant ethic thesis.

Book excerpt: Season Of The Witch is an unconventional and different tale about men, women, the sea, a storm, a shipwreck and a myth that became reality. It is a tale that takes one into the life of a mariner as his ship heads on a one way voyage to eternity. It is the tale of a ferocious autumn storm and the ordeals a man and his wife are subjected to. It is the tale of survival as a man clings to a lifeboat and stares death in the face as he rides the tempests. It is the tale of a Great Lakes Shipwreck that will lead one to wonder if it really had happened.

Book excerpt: Growing up gay or lesbian is difficult enough, but having no literature which exemplifies this lifestyle sends a clear message to every gay little girl and boy that they should remain invisible. All fairytales scream heterosexuality. Just once, I'd love to see Cinderella bump into Snow White's glass coffin on the way to the ball, give her that proverbial kiss and live happily ever after in lesbian bliss. This is the basis of my book Sticks and Stones. These are four gender bending fairytales affirming that all lives are sacred and all love is good. There is no preaching, no weak females waiting to be rescued by the handsome prince, and no two dimensional men without flaws. These are the gay community's politically correct fairytales. Complete with battles, monsters and magic potions they will keep both adults and children waiting to see what happens next.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Alan Muir Wood sits in the pantheon of great civil engineers of the twentieth century. In Civil Engineering in Context, Sir Alan Muir Wood draws from his long career to place as he says 'civil engineering in context'. The book contains many personal reminiscences of his life as an engineer from early days as a wartime marine engineer in the Royal Navy, through his more than 25 year career as a Partner and Senior Partner with Halcrow and as a tunnelling engineer of world renown. Civil Engineering in Context also presents Sir Alan's strongly held and sometimes controversial views on how civil engineering as an industry has developed since the pragmatic enterprise of the nineteenth century, through a twentieth century where much of the momentum was lost, and how it should be developing in the twenty-first century. Sir Alan ranges across many topics which directly affect the role of the engineer, including management and the law, systems and design, and ethics and politics. He also discusses his contribution and the wider aspects to some of the major projects of the twentieth century such as the Channel Tunnel. Civil Engineering in Context provides an enlightening insight into the civil engineer and civil engineering through the eyes of one of it most eminent protagonists.
