Book excerpt: A history that is equal parts science and mythology, Sacred Sites offers a rare and poetic vision of a world composed of dynamic natural forces and mythic characters. The result is a singular and memorable account of the evolution of the Southern California landscape, reflecting the riches of both Native knowledge and Western scientific thought. Beginning with Western science, poet Susan Suntree carries readers from the Big Bang to the present as she describes the origins of the universe, the shifting of tectonic plates, and an evolving array of plants and animals that give Southern California its unique features today. She tells of the migration of humans into the region, where they settled, and how they lived. Complementing this narrative and reflecting Native peoples' view of their own history and way of life, Suntree recounts the creation myths and songs that tell the story of the First People and of unforgettable shamans and heroes. Featuring contemporary photographs of rarely seen landmarks along with meticulous research, Sacred Sites provides unusual insight into how natural history and mythology and scientific and intuitive thinking combine to create an ever-deepening sense of a place and its people.

Book excerpt: The Wisdom of Walk-Ons tells the true stories of three unrecruited college football players who-against overwhelming odds-played for some of the greatest programs and Hall of Fame coaches in history: the Alabama Crimson Tide with Paul "Bear" Bryant, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish with Dan Devine, and the Southern California Trojans with John Robinson. Former walk-ons Gordon Adams, Bob Bleyer, and Alan Pizzitola graduated from these storied universities in the 1970s and '80s with academic honors, national championship rings, practical skills, and a collection of winning strategies that helped them persevere and succeed in business and life in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s. All of us can apply this walk-on wisdom and become more successful and fulfilled in our professional and personal lives.

This book (Volume I) is a collection of weekly talks, conversations and messages that Sri Sri Ravi Shankar gave between June 21 1995 to June 13 1996. An Intimate Note to the Sincere Seeker is a compilation of excerpts of talks by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in the year 1995 - 1996. While these talks often discuss the state of the world at the time they were written, because they discuss human life on the most basic levels - love, hatred, trust, peace, silence, happiness, they are still valuable today. They give us an insight into this knowledge that is so deeply profound, yet so simple, knowledge that does not just remain in the intellect, but is beautifully and effortlessly integrated into daily life. Sri Sri avoids lengthy discussions about the deeper philosophy of life, yet his talks reflect these values to their very core. This book is specially compiled to help readers going through an emotional phase or who need a guidance in life. The reader can go through any one random page (365 chapters for 365 days) for help or can follow as per ones discretion

Huntington, nephew and protégé of Southern Pacific Railroad magnate Collis Huntington, decided to invest his fortune in developing interurban railroads serving the Los Angeles Basin, beginning in 1898 and working through 1920. With enough capital to put railroads where he felt they would work best, he exerted considerable influence on the early growth of Southern California. He also invested in a number of other regional industries, and as an avid collector of rare books and art, he and his second wife Arabella created a notable cultural legacy as well.

It has been in existence since time began, long before the appearance of any of today's major religions. Although ancient in source, it has a philosophical integrity that is as relevant in today's life as it has been in every previous period of time. No irreconcilable leaps of faith are required. No mysteries. All is knowable. The wisdom contained herein is that which has always been previously communicated to interested spiritual aspirants who sought it out. This book continues that tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lessons of the Wild creates an awareness of the essential lessons that Nature teaches us, and provides a guidebook for men and women--particularly those in their forties, fifties, and sixties--who are seeking greater significance in their lives. This book traces the traditional meaning of wilderness, blended with deep reflections and fascinating stories told by ordinary--and some extraordinary--people, whose lives were dramatically altered by their experiences in wild places. In Lessons of the Wild, Ed Andersen proposes that we have become estranged from the Source of our being and that the wilderness is our place of deep belonging. He calls for a rediscovery of our densely embedded affiliation with the Earth and its inhabitants. In support of this call, he offers five paired paths to wisdom, called Habits of Wholeness, which ultimately lead the reader to the consideration of a radical personal freedom. The book is unique in the way that it captures the elusive relationship between the outer wilderness of Nature and the inner wilderness of the human spirit. Lessons of the Wild is also a book about transitions--particularly in the major passages from boyhood to manhood and from the middle years to an age of wisdom. Lessons of the Wild is grounded in the profound conviction that wisdom can be drawn out of the wilderness and into everyday experience. And that, through Nature, we can begin to recover some of what's missing from our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Davis Wilson was one of the first American settlers in Southern California. He became a prosperous rancher and the mayor of little Los Angeles. A special friend of the Indians of Southern California, Wilson was appointed their subagent in 1852, when the Indians were on the edge of catastrophe, their population reduced by two-thirds within a generation. Wilson's great contribution, the one he wished to be remembered for, was to appraise the problems of these Indians and urge their settlement on land set aside for them. His report (published in the Los Angeles Star in 1868) was instrumental in creating the reservation system. The Indians of Southern California in 1852 was inspired by Wilson's desire "to secure peace and justice to the Indians." He recognized his duty to guard against Indian raids on the ranchos and settlements while establishing policies that ensured the future welfare of Indians suffering from the breakdown of the old mission program. Besides the influential Wilson report, this volume contains vivid descriptions of life in the so-called Cow Counties of Southern California at mid-nineteenth century. Also included are excerpts from contemporary newspapers. The editor, John Walton Caughey, is the author of Gold Is the Cornerstone and California. Albert L. Hurtado is an associate professor of history at Arizona State University and the author of Indian Survival on the California Frontier.
