Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bernard Shaw For I think our experiences tally on this point, that the author of Man and Superman, like the author of Hamlet, are both more talked about than studied, and I am quite convinced that as the touchstone to the worthiness of our Leeds friends was their attitude towards the former, so the ratio of individuals towards the modern movement of ideas must be gauged by the intelligence Of their attitude towards the same person. If Bernard Shaw's work were merely unique, we could all afford to laugh and pass on but it is a great deal more than that, it stands in the same relation to our day as the work of Swift did to his day, or Carlyle's to his, and people to-day who are ready to admit the insufficiency of intelligent discrimination then are reminded not to repeat a similar error in judgment now. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Bernard Shaw: His Plays The Origin of Species the fight against orthodoxy, custom, and authority was perennially and necessarily a losing one. On the side of the defense were ignorance, antiquity, piety, organization, and respectability - twelve inch, wire-wound, rapid-fire guns, all of them. In the hands of the scattered, half-hearted, unorganized at tacking parties there were but two weapons - the blow pipe of impious doubt and the bludgeon of sacrilege. Neither, unsupported, was very effective. Voltaire, who tried both, scared the defenders a bit and for a while there was a great pother and scurrying about, but when the smoke cleared away the walls were just as strong as before and the drawbridge was still up. One had to believe or be damned. There was no compromise and no middle ground. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Bernard Shaw: A Critical Study Birds of paradox is unsound. Paradox is truth disguised as untruth and the disguise must be some thing subtler than exaggeration and more frivolous than honest error. But most of what is regarded as paradox in Shaw's personal expressions is either a, strategical exaggeration of what he believes to be a! Fact or a sincere conviction which is so unusual as to seem insincere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bernard Shaw the Man and the Mask The following pages attempt to give within limits somewhat sharply drawn a definite idea of the personality, the work, and the meaning of a dramatist of our day who has gained distinction, invited abuse, and secured in excess the dubious compliment of misrepresentation. SO far as the book can claim to be a contribution to the subject, it may base it on the succinctness of the presenta tion; the analyses of the plays in chronologic sequence, technic as well as teaching and literary quality in mind; and upon the chapters in which respectively Shaw's craft as an artist of the thea tre and his intellectual significance as publicist and philosopher are studied. No one can write a book on Bernard Shaw with out acknowledging the inevitable obligation to Dr. Archibald Henderson, the authoritative biographer Of the playwright, and the man best fitted to de cide any question pertaining to him. The present writer renders grateful thanks to Dr. Henderson for his quick and generous giving of information not otherwise to be secured: a debt as pleasant as it is imperative to pay in this preface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bernard Shaw: A Critical Study Legal limit of twenty miles an hour has now for some time been an earnest (and a shameful thing it should be so low - that is what we to-day are saying); if Mr. Shaw tells us that twenty years ago it was a jest which was an earnest in the womb of time, we shall understand him quite perfectly. For centuries in England it was a jest to say that pigs might fly, and pigs may fly to-day any afternoon they are taken to Hendon. On general grounds, then, no quarrel is possible with our subject's utter ance, that a jest is an earnest in the womb of time. But on the particular ground of Mr. Shaw's own jests, we have to refuse very positively one inference from this utterance, or else this study cannot possibly be proceeded with. For one inference is that a jest of Mr. Shaw's cannot fairly be the subject of criticism until it has issued from the womb of time in good earnest. In other words, we may not say that we think Mr. Shaw wrong until we have given Time time to prove him right. We may not say that we think Mr. Shaw right for fear that posterity should know him to be wrong. If Mr. Shaw prophesies the full working beauties of Social Democracy in England (as he does, if only we miserable forty-eight millions have the will), we may not say whether we should personally fancy Social Democracy.
