Book Synopsis The Flexible Firm by : Julian Birkinshaw
Download or read book The Flexible Firm written by Julian Birkinshaw and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-03-16 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pace of change in the business world is becoming faster. This book provides a detailed account of the network-like organization forms that some firms are adopting to make themselves more flexible and responsive to changing technologies and customer demands. As these organizations become more pervasive, the winners will be those firms that develop the specific capabilities that are needed to thrive in a networked world. Paradoxically, such capabilities are developed not only at the firm level, but also in the relationships the firm has with its external network and in the operating units within the firm. This perspective has implications for the 'resource-based view of the firm' in the field of strategic management, suggesting that the development of capabilities is a more complex and multi-level process than was traditionally thought. This book brings together eleven chapters, each focusing on a particular aspect of capability development in the networked firm. It is based on research in five big Swedish firms (Ericsson, Volvo, Skandia, Pharmacia & Upjohn, SE Banken) as well as a number of other well-known firms such as HP and ABB. The book will be essential reading for advanced students in strategy and international business wanting to keep abreast of current thinking and company practices.

Download or read book Global Control written by Peter McMahon and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: McMahon (Institute for Sustainability and Technology Policy, Murdoch U., Australia) argues that the combination of power, usually in the form of wealth, and the availability of information technology has enabled the growth of large hierarchies throughout history. Speaking of social control in terms of a system of influences, commands, and feedback, he examines how information revolutions from the advent of telecommunications to the current global information web have conditioned efforts to attempts to impose systemic order on world social relations. He describes this process as one that has alternated between periods of relatively peaceful hegemony and open, international warfare, but has had a broad trend towards deep systematization over time in terms of market formation, mass industrialization, and cyber-financial coordination. Book excerpt: Terrorist Inc. is a tale of the dangers and enemies lurking near us: enemies who profit by keeping war, social unrest, and terrorism alive. Multinational corporations who control energy, medicine, communications, weapons, and finance industries that, out of greed, sell out to terrorists are now on our avenging radar. Hamilton Kent Jr., also known as Sook, and his teams of daring avengers are comprised of several generations from America and Asia. The team starts off avenging Sooks father who was murdered by an American defense contractor with the complicit blind eye of career US government officials. Over time Sook brings rancorous retribution to other evildoers while wreaking havoc on global terrorists. As you follow the quest, you should understand why the rich and powerful get away with murder every day and governments allow it. Many will discover nothing is easy; and waiting on retirement, supporting terrorist, or betraying the trust of your country may be painful, if not fatal. There is pleasure in revenge! The silent majority may be silent, but we are no longer docile or defenseless.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate Geography examines the spatial structures and behaviour of large business organizations. Corporations are key operational units of economies. Each corporation has several locations and connections to suppliers and customers who also operate in geographical space. The effectiveness of corporate spatial organizations is of importance for their well-being and for the health of the national and local economies in which they operate. This volume discusses where and why firms locate units of production, sales and control and how these interact with each other, with suppliers and with customers. The foundations are from commercial geography, business economics and location theory, but there are some unique characteristics. One is the blending of manufacturing and retailing in one treatise. Another is the extensive use of real-company case studies which illustrate both the basic concepts and the inadequacies of existing models. Corporate managers can relate to the experiences of actual companies. This book is of interest to scientists, researchers and professionals in economic geography, business administration, general management, microeconomies, industrial organization and economic planning.
