Book Synopsis Medieval Church Window Tracery in England by : Stephen Hart
Download or read book Medieval Church Window Tracery in England written by Stephen Hart and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2010 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the terms used to describe the tracery of medieval church windows are familiar (Early English, Decorated, Perpendicular), there has been no really detailed attempt to examine it as a distinct, stylistic architectural form, a gap which this book seeks to address. Based upon a visual catalogue of over 250 images of surviving types and styles from churches throughout England, it traces the progression of ideas and the continuity of motifs and themes in tracery patterns from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries, showing how different themes emerged within the main architectural styles; it also looks at the distinction between a window's architectural form and its tracery style, and describes the several different tracery techniques. The volume is completed with a detailed glossary. Stephen Hart is a retired architect, and the author of numerous works, including Flint Flushwork.
Download or read book Christchurch written by Anna Rogers and published by Exisle Publishing. This book was released on 2003-11 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city of the plains', 'the garden city', 'the cathedral city': Christchurch has traditionally been characterised by its geography, its horticulture and its Anglican heritage. But Christchurch also has a strong literary pedigree, signalled early on by Canterbury settlers like Sarah Amelia Courage, and later confirmed by the establishment of the Caxton Press and the Pegasus Press, both enlivened by the irrepressible Denis Glover, and by the vibrant theatre associated with Ngaio Marsh. For this wide-ranging anthology, Anna Rogers has selected poetry, prose and fiction that both celebrates and gently satirises the city on the Avon. Novelists James Courage and Steven Eldred-Grigg rub shoulders with columnist Joe Bennett, poet Hone Tuwhare and short fiction writers Owen Marshall and Fiona Farrell. It is a collection that citizens and visitors alike will appreciate and enjoy. The 'Our City' series offers a new perspective on New Zealand's major cities. Each volume presents a selection of the literature inspired by one of New Zealand's four major cities. Chosen with care by a well-known editor from each city, the selections include short stories, poems, and extracts from novels and writers' memoirs. Each contributor, whether contemporary or historical, has a strong association with the city concerned, and every selection has something significant to say about the character of the city. Together they create a vivid picture of what makes the city unique.

Book Synopsis Broken Idols of the English Reformation by : Margaret Aston
Download or read book Broken Idols of the English Reformation written by Margaret Aston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-26 with total page 1994 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why were so many religious images and objects broken and damaged in the course of the Reformation? Margaret Aston's magisterial new book charts the conflicting imperatives of destruction and rebuilding throughout the English Reformation from the desecration of images, rails and screens to bells, organs and stained glass windows. She explores the motivations of those who smashed images of the crucifixion in stained glass windows and who pulled down crosses and defaced symbols of the Trinity. She shows that destruction was part of a methodology of religious revolution designed to change people as well as places and to forge in the long term new generations of new believers. Beyond blanked walls and whited windows were beliefs and minds impregnated by new modes of religious learning. Idol-breaking with its emphasis on the treacheries of images fundamentally transformed not only Anglican ways of worship but also of seeing, hearing and remembering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Church and Estate, Thomas Rzeznik examines the lives and religious commitments of the Philadelphia elite during the period of industrial prosperity that extended from the late nineteenth century through the 1920s. The book demonstrates how their religious beliefs informed their actions and shaped their class identity, while simultaneously revealing the ways in which financial influences shaped the character of American religious life. In tracing those connections, it shows how religion and wealth shared a fruitful, yet ultimately tenuous, relationship.

Book Synopsis "Art, Piety and Destruction in the Christian West, 1500?700 " by : VirginiaChieffo Raguin
Download or read book "Art, Piety and Destruction in the Christian West, 1500?700 " written by VirginiaChieffo Raguin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning two centuries and two continents, Art, Piety and Destruction in the Christian West, 1500-1700 addresses the impact of religious tensions on art, design, and architecture in the early modern world. Beyond famous works of art such as Kraft's Eucharistic Tabernacle, the volume examines less-studied objects, including church plate and vestments, stained glass, graffiti, and Mexican images of St. Anne, created throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The collection's contributors present religious artworks from Germany, England, Italy, France, Spain, and Mexico; the media include sculpture, oil painting, fresco, metalwork, dress, and architecture. Questions of art's destruction, preservation, and censorship are discussed against the ever-present backdrop of religious conflict and varying degrees of tolerance. New information and original perspectives demonstrate the ways in which art illuminates history, and the close links between the changing values of a society and the images it displays to represent itself.
