Book Synopsis Laughing Gods, Weeping Virgins by : Ingvild Saelid Gilhus
Download or read book Laughing Gods, Weeping Virgins written by Ingvild Saelid Gilhus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laughing Gods, Weeping Virgins analyses how laughter has been used as a symbol in myths, rituals and festivals of Western religions, and has thus been inscribed in religious discourse. The Mesopotamian Anu, the Israelite Jahweh, the Greek Dionysos, the Gnostic Christ and the late modern Jesus were all laughing gods. Through their laughter, gods prove both their superiority and their proximity to humans. In this comprehensive study, Professor Gilhus examines the relationship between corporeal human laughter and spiritual divine laughter from c`ussical antiquity, to the Christian West and the modern era. She combines the study of the history of religion with social-scientific approaches, to provide an original and pertinent exploration of a universal human phenomenon, and its significance for the development of religions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brilliant, jubilant insights into the glory and anguish of life from one of the world’s most treasured Indigenous creators. Trickster is zany, ridiculous. The ultimate, over-the-top, madcap fool. Here to remind us that the reason for existence is to have a blast and to laugh ourselves silly. Celebrated author and playwright Tomson Highway brings his signature irreverence to an exploration of five themes central to the human condition: language, creation, sex and gender, humour, and death. A comparative analysis of Christian, classical, and Cree mythologies reveals their contributions to Western thought, life, and culture—and how North American Indigenous mythologies provide unique, timeless solutions to our modern problems. Highway also offers generous personal anecdotes, including accounts of his beloved accordion-playing, caribou-hunting father, and plentiful Trickster stories as curatives for the all-out unhappiness caused by today’s patriarchal, colonial systems. Laugh with the legendary Tomson Highway as he illuminates a healing, hilarious way forward.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to be short and sweet so that everyone can read through it quickly and remember the principles easily and quickly so as to be able to apply them in their daily lives. How many times have you bought a book but left it on the shelf because it has way too many pages? I myself have bought two bookcases of books, many of which were left unread. This book is designed for you to be able to finish reading quickly so everyone can start applying these basic principles of happiness. When read thoroughly, these principles can be comprehended quickly. When applied, they can be very effective in serving their purpose. It is my joy and my hope that everyone will apply these principles and help each other and everyone around them lead a happy, loving, and blessed life. This book is an antidote for bottled-up anger, suppressed depression, and stifled expression of one's emotions. It is the ultimate solution that I hope will be much more effective and better than any drug or any gun-control measures (even though that is necessary too), far better than any depression pills one can take. It solves the root of the problem from the inside out, clearing bottled-up anger, uncontrollable depression, and stifled emotions. It is a very effective solution to marital problems in prevention of a pending divorce and as a secret to a happy family. These principles, when applied to our daily lives, could be the ultimate solutions for our social problems that cost the society much more money and lives than one can even think of. Without them, we are all robbing ourselves of the joy of livelihood, the ultimate living in this happy world. If applied, this world could be a much happier place to live in the ultimate goal for everyone, the rich and the everyday person who is always striving to succeed. If applied, we will not be wasting our money and time on taking drugs or drinking alcohol just to drown our sorrows so we can feel better for that small moment of time drugs and alcohol can bring. My antidote is natural and free; it will save you a lot of money and bring you a lot of happiness in many years to come. Joy and happiness will soon be a part of your family life and part of your daily living so that not many can comprehend how one can even achieve this kind of happiness without money, drugs, or alcohol. This book brings everlasting joy and happiness from the inside out, hence helping to solve our social problems such as gun killings, murder due to anger, suicides caused by depression, and also marital problems and divorces.

Book Synopsis Histories of Laughter and Laughter in History by : Rafał Borysławski
Download or read book Histories of Laughter and Laughter in History written by Rafał Borysławski and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-17 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laughter is often no laughing matter, and, as such, it deserves continued scholarly attention as a social, cultural and historical phenomenon. This collection of essays is a meeting ground for scholars from several disciplines, including historians, philologists, and scholars of social sciences, to discuss places and roles of laughter in history, in historical narratives, and in cultural anthropology from prehistory to the present. The common foci of the papers gathered in this volume are to examine laughter and its meanings, to reflect on the place of laughter in Western history and literature, to disclose laughter’s manipulative potential in historical and literary narratives, to see it in the light of the concepts of carnivalesque and playfulness, to see it as a reflection of hysterical historicizing, to see its place in comedy, farce, grotesque and irony, and to see it against its broadly understood theoretical, philosophical and psychological aspects. The book will appeal chiefly to an academic readership, including students, historians, literary and cultural scholars, sociologists, and cultural anthropologists.

Book Synopsis Reading Esther by : Kenneth M. Craig
Download or read book Reading Esther written by Kenneth M. Craig and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original interpretation of the book of Esther, Kenneth Craig offers to interpreters a new way of reading this story. According to Craig, Esther has been undervalued and misunderstood because its true genre, the literary carnivalesque, has not been considered. The Literary Currents in Biblical Interpretation series explores current trends within the discipline of biblical interpretation by dealing with the literary qualities of the Bible: the play of its language, the coherence of its final form, and the relationships between text and readers. Biblical interpreters are being challenged to take responsibility for the theological, social, and ethical implications of their readings. This series encourages original readings that breach the confines of traditional biblical criticism.
Book Synopsis Redeeming Laughter by : Peter L. Berger
Download or read book Redeeming Laughter written by Peter L. Berger and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid the variety of human experiences, the comic occupies a distinctive place. It is simultaneously ubiquitous, relative, and fragile. In this book, Peter L. Berger reflects on the nature of the comic and its relationship to other human experiences. Berger contends that the comic is an integral aspect of human life, yet one that must be approached and analyzed circumspectly and circuitously. Beginning with an exploration of the anatomy of the comic, Berger addresses humor in philosophy, physiology, psychology, and the social sciences before turning to a discussion of different types of comedy and finally suggesting a theology of the comic in terms of its relationship to folly, redemption, and transcendence. Along the way, the reader is treated to a variety of jokes on a variety of topics, with particular emphasis on humor and its relationship to religion. Originally published in 1997, the second edition includes a new preface reflecting on Berger’s work in the intervening years, particularly on the relationship between humor and modernity.
