Book Synopsis The Philosopher's Window by : Allen R. Grossman
Download or read book The Philosopher's Window written by Allen R. Grossman and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The speaker of The Philosopher's Window and Other Poems, Allen Grossman tells us, is "an old man compelled by the insistent questioning of the children to explain himself"--and in this way, the world. He begins with creation ("The Great Work Farm Elegy"), recalls the romantic quest of youth ("The Philosopher's Window"), returns to reality ("The Snowfall" and "Whoever Builds"). His tales told, the old man wakes in a stormy springtime ("June, June"), "when the lilacs are gone." Grossman's allegory of life's journey, at once sonorous and antic, takes in the high and the low in these new visionary songs of innocence and experience. Allen Grossman is Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities at The Johns Hopkins University. He counts among his many honors and awards MacArthur, Guggenheim, and NEA fellowships, the Witter Bynner Prize for Poetry, and the PEN-Sheaffer/New England Award for Literary Distinction. The Philosopher's Window is his eighth book of poetry. His previous collection, The Ether Dome & Other Poems New and Selected (1991), was a National Book Critics Circle Award nominee.

Book excerpt: Poetry. Bilingual Edition. Translated from the German by David Young. Cover art by the author's wife, Gisele Celan-Lestrange. "Celan's English language readers, and readers to come, will be deeply grateful for this new translation of his second book. I admire David Young's clear and respectful introduction, generous to his colleagues in Celan translation, and helpful in providing a broad context for this poetry; and I admire, especially, his faithfulness in spirit as he becomes a 'water-diviner' of Celan's work. Young is a subtle, trusting reader of the ways this poet of poets took—as he had to—to create a completely new poetry."—Jean Valentine This collection is the first of three by Celan that David Young is undertaking to present in their entirety. He works at present as an editor at Oberlin College Press.
Download or read book Intimates written by Helen Farish and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-05-31 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provocative and tender, passionate yet wary, the highly charged poems in Helen Farish's first collection testify to the complex nature of relationships with lovers, with family and with the self. The love poems explore moments of intense exposure, and within the erotic relation seek to carve out a voice adequate to the expression of female sexuality and desire. Within this framework, the body itself becomes a rich and compelling site of inquiry. Posted throughout the collection like sentinels, poems on the death of the father draw the poet back home where grief mingles with surprising moments of grace or redemption. But whether the encounter concerns sudden loss or sudden blessing, constant throughout is a warm and boldly embodied lyric 'I' voice generously inviting the reader in. Poised at life's mid-point, these haunting, haunted poems negotiate their emotional freight in carefully crafted forms which mediate between exposure and guardedness. Expertly charting the geographies of sex and love, the histories of childhood and grief, Intimates introduces a new poet of originality, honesty and singular power.

Book Synopsis The Southern Garden Poetry Society by : David B Honey
Download or read book The Southern Garden Poetry Society written by David B Honey and published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press. This book was released on 2013-03-06 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What has traditionally been the main matter explored by Cantonese literati? From the earliest poets—oceanic elements and riparian scenes contrasted with stunning rock formations; a love for the exotic, especially local plants, products, and lore; Daoist transcendentalism; and, finally, a concern for pointing up local loyalty to the distant throne and a fierce pride in being culturally authentically Chinese. The Southern Garden Poetry Society in Guangzhou was the only major literary club in Chinese history to be periodically reconvened over the Ming, Qing, and Republican eras. Beginning with an examination of its five founding members during the Yuan / Ming transition period, in particular Sun Fen (1335–1393), David Honey traces the various elements of this Southern Muse that became embodied in later Cantonese poetry, and pursues the issue of social memory by focusing on later reconvenings of the society.

Book Synopsis Vienna Blood & Other Poems by : Jerome Rothenberg
Download or read book Vienna Blood & Other Poems written by Jerome Rothenberg and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 1980 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vienna Blood & Other Poems is in some ways the most synthesizing of Jerome Rothenberg's recent collections, pulling together work from the 1970s that stands apart from Poland/1931 (1974) and A Seneca Journal (1978) yet at the same time continuing the enactment of past and present begun in those books. But where before he chose to restrict his exploration to ancestral Jewish and Amerindian poetries, Rothenberg now takes us on a series of broader journeys through the collapsed landscape of what he calls the 'new wilderness," evoked as place, as structure, as mind. Written both to be read quietly on the printed page and aloud in performance, the poems in Vienna Blood, though experimental and language-centered, are nevertheless the work of a poet who, by his own admission, is "crazy for content, make no mistake about it." As if to underscore this point, he has appended brief comments to most of the major sections of the book, in order, as he says, "to give it some context in the way of 'oral tradition' usually reserved for poetry readings, etc., a little of which I now commit to writing."
