Book Synopsis Madame Gilbert's Cannibal by : Bennet Copplestone
Download or read book Madame Gilbert's Cannibal written by Bennet Copplestone and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 20th-century fiction by Bennet Copplestone circles Madame Gilbert's various travels during the first world war. Her war service ended when Austria fell out, and now she shares the experiences of her several journeys and the social life and customs of the people of the places she has visited. From a historical point of view, it seems intended as a tribute to the simplicity and virtue of a noble race of islanders and a mocking criticism of 'modern civilization.' The language used throughout the work is graceful, and storytelling exciting. Excerpt from Madame Gilbert's Cannibal "The war satisfactorily won, Madame Gilbert sped home to revel in the first holiday which she had known since August, 1914. She always seems to travel with fewer restrictions and at greater speed than any except Prime Ministers and commanding Generals. In Italy she is an Italian and in France a Frenchwoman—a dazzling Italian and a very winning Frenchwoman."

Book Synopsis Photographing Papua by : Max Quanchi
Download or read book Photographing Papua written by Max Quanchi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photographing Papua is a study of photography in the public domain in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It argues that southeastern New Guinea, known as British New Guinea and then as Papua when it became an Australian colony, was created as a geographical place through visual representation in illustrated magazines and newspapers, lavishly illustrated travelogues and mission hagiography, serial encyclopedia, lantern slides and postcards. Readers :knew" Papua because many thousands of black and white photographs of Papuans, villages and material culture rapidly swamped the reading public once the process of halftone, newsprint reproduction became possible. In an innovative and breakthrough fashion Photographing Papua switches attention from a few well known prints in museums and archives, in some cases repeatedly reproduced, but mostly rarely seen outside of scientific and scholarly circles. It deals instead with thousands of photographs, often used in ways not intended when the photograph was taken, but which editors and publishers (and subsequent photographers) gradually made conform to an iconographic imperative, a sort of abbreviated visual gallery of "natives" and a quick-access pathway to the actual and imagined lives of Papuans in the "last Unknown" as New Guinea was titled. It is a study of representation, colonialism, cross-cultural encounters and the early world of illustrated media and photo-journalism.
Book Synopsis The Stolen Island by : Scott Hamilton
Download or read book The Stolen Island written by Scott Hamilton and published by Bridget Williams Books. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘What had happened to the stolen islanders? Had any survived slavery?’ One day in 1863 a strange ship stopped at ‘Ata, a tiny island in the wild seas between Tonga and New Zealand, and sailed away with one hundred and forty-four men, women and children. The ‘Atans were never heard from again, and in Tonga their fate became the subject of legends and superstitions. Uncovering the tragedy of ‘Ata takes Scott Hamilton on a journey to the kava circles and caves of Tonga and back to the streets of Auckland. The Stolen Island is a twenty-first century true sea story revealing slavers, mutinies, castaways, pirates and a cruel streak in Pacific history that is often overlooked but not forgotten.
