Vivid images of a time long past make the reader feel as though they are present in each scene. Stories of when life was simpler, and respect for elders and tradition evokes a warmth you can feel deep in your soul—like a cozy woolen blanket. “A book of nostalgic short stories, nostalgic for how life was...and perhaps could still be...in Cape Breton. It’s a delightful read by an artistically gifted person. She is a known visual artist, a seamstress, a doll-maker and a weaver, whose skills are highly valued by her community. This collection appears to be the next page in the current chapter of her life, where we find her writing with the same skill she applied to earlier arts & crafts. She is very close to the hearts of her characters in these well-told tales. Write on Donelda!” —Carole Chisholm. B.A., B.Ed., M.A., Retired English teacher from Mabou Consolidated School “Donelda has always been a very, very creative person, a wonderful cook, and a great story teller, and this this book reminds me just how good she is!” —Beth Ryan “Anybody could do it, but only a Weaver did!” — Little Collie MacDonell

This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. Here, the prolific writer turned editor for his final grand work, a splendid survey of global literature, classic and modern, and it's not too much to suggest that if his friend and colleague Mark Twain-who stole Warner's quip about how "everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it"-had assembled this set, it would still be hailed today as one of the great achievements of the book world. Volume 40 is a comprehensive selection of songs and hymns including works by: . Richard Lovelace . Nora Hopper . James Montgomery . Sarah Williams . Charles Godfrey Leland . Andrew Marvell . King Henry IV of France . Gerald Massey . Eliza Calvert Hall . Sir Walter Raleigh . and many others

Book excerpt: In this definitive work for our generation, Donald Low brings together, for the first time, the words and tunes of all Burns' known songs, both `polite' and bawdy. The Songs of Robert Burns were, in their author's eyes, the crown of his achievement as a poet. After years of study and investigation, many hours spent listening to old airs, as he recalled the living, daily, song-life of the people of Scotland, and through the creation of some of the finest lyric poetry produced in the British Isles, Burns' success is beyond doubt.

Book Synopsis Rhetorical Crossover by : Cedric Burrows
Download or read book Rhetorical Crossover written by Cedric Burrows and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In music, crossover means that a song has moved beyond its original genre and audience into the general social consciousness. Rhetorical Crossover uses the same concept to theorize how the black rhetorical presence has moved in mainstream spaces in an era where African Americans were becoming more visible in white culture. Cedric Burrows argues that when black rhetoric moves into the dominant culture, white audiences appear welcoming to African Americans as long as they present an acceptable form of blackness for white tastes. The predominant culture has always constructed coded narratives on how the black rhetorical presence should appear and behave when in majority spaces. In response, African Americans developed their own narratives that revise and reinvent mainstream narratives while also reaffirming their humanity. Using an interdisciplinary model built from music, education, film, and social movement studies, Rhetorical Crossover details the dueling narratives about African Americans that percolate throughout the United States.
