Book excerpt: A Gypsy lad named Finch arrives at Wychwood Castle to find it a tangle of muddled chivalry and magic. Though four royal children conform to rules of chivalry, Princess Elaine is a red-haired hoyden who can't faint, wants to study witchcraft rather than marrying, and whose magic spells always go wrong (and so do most others). Prince Arthur wishes that just once, people would follow the rules of chivalry-but they never do-not even Thunder, his warhorse, who loves to cheat at tournaments. Finch, fascinated, stays as stable boy and tone-deaf troubadour to join Elaine in scrapes. What with the awful Fer de Lance family, a wicked enchantress, a mad magician, two witches, three cats, a sourcerous hive of bees, a spell-casting mouse, and some temperamental horses, they manage to enchant broomsticks, palace guards, a feather duster, a footstool, troubadours and even Elaine herself. King Godobert, determined to find husbands for his daughters, holds a Quest. No one wants Elaine, so, betrothed willy nilly to a perfect stranger, she rages that she won't marry him. Finch vanishes. Elaine misses him-but when a pink magpie delivers a "save me, save me, save me" message, life promises to be interesting despite everything.

In order to fulfill the image of a perfect princess, she is readying herself to marry Prince Gael of Eltra, ending centuries of feuding even if Anya isn't convinced that she can love him; that she won't lose her sense of self while carrying out her duty. Problems arise in Anya's world when her younger sister Eleanor falls terribly jealous that she cannot be queen. She and the prince himself seem to team up behind Anya's back as they are keen to get much more than peace for the kingdoms. Yet even darkness has its light when the princess meets a woman in town, Evangeline, a beautiful, feisty young woman whose air of intrigue throws Anya's world upside-down. However what Anya does not know is that Evangeline has secrets--and she is not the only one. Anya finds herself torn between two things: her kingdom and her heart. Will this choice put Anya in danger?

She'd prefer to cut loose at a punk club, knock back a few Thai beers, and hook up with a likely lad of similar interests. But when Fiona goes AWOL, she only gets as far as Manhattan's Inwood Park before a nasty demon nearly puts a permanent crimp in her plans—and a dark stranger sparks her desire... All work and no play make Tobias Walker one cranky werewolf. After six months of doing his part to keep the peace during the delicate negotiations between the Others and humankind, he'd like nothing more than a good night's sleep—preceded by an enthusiastic mating session. The alluring woman he rescues in the park might be the answer to his most lustful prayers, but only if they can both stay alive long enough to find out who wants her dead and why. Now, Fiona and Tobias must unravel a tangled web of treachery that spans branches of the Fae, Other, and mortal worlds, all the while falling into a dangerous attraction that could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship—or the end for them both...

Some of the 78 tales in this remarkable book first appeared in print over a thousand years ago; others are medieval classics. Yet each has a special relevance for us at the dawn of the 21st century. All are told with Idries Shah's distinctive wit and grace and the author's own commentary notes. These are teaching stories in the Sufi tradition. Those who probe beyond the surface will find multiple meanings to challenge assumptions and foster new ways of thinking and perceiving. Tales of the Dervishes is essential reading for anyone interested in Sufi thought, the significance and history of tales, or simply superb entertainment.

Book excerpt: Thant tells the story of modern Burma, in part through a telling of his own family's history, in an interwoven narrative that is by turns lyrical, dramatic, and appalling. His maternal grandfather, U Thant, rose from being the schoolmaster of a small town in the Irrawaddy Delta to become the UN secretary-general in the 1960s. And on his father's side, the author is descended from a long line of courtiers who served at Burma's Court of Ava for nearly two centuries. Through their stories and others, he portrays Burma's rise and decline in the modern world, from the time of Portuguese pirates and renegade Mughal princes through the decades of British colonialism, the devastation of World War II, and a sixty-year civil war that continues today and is the longest-running war anywhere in the world.--From publisher description.

Book excerpt: Bea Chance is an exceptional woman, inventor and entrepreneur, with a thriving business, successful marriage and four grown children: Dick, her right-hand man; Bruce, a Vietnam veteran; Corey, her only daughter, and John, a disc jockey. A musician and pioneer in technology, she combined her musical and computer expertise to develop a system for musical composition and simultaneous recording and playback which she applied to the teaching of music in schools. When she decides suddenly to retire, partially in response to the death of her husband, her departure sends her family and her corporate, as well as corporeal, systems into chaos. This novel describes how she moves from being a woman with power to becoming a powerful, compassionate woman. Her personal transformation, in turn, has dynamic effects on her own mother, Mildred; her children; her co-worker and left-hand woman, Clare; and her friend Pearl. A reflection on gender and power, loss, metamorphosis and love, this novel explores issues of mothering, inheritance, and generation for modern women. An "oppositional narrative" based on Shakespeare's King Lear, Queen Bea explores what happens when the king becomes a queen and when an ancient tale is translated into a contemporary idiom. "Blanchard's book is bound to become a classic for women's studies and contemporary literature courses alike because it grounds an engaging second wave feminist novel in explicating essays that both honor and explode the typical canon of options used." -Ida Kialutsi, artist and professor

Book excerpt: The Game Boy Advance platform as computational system and cultural artifact, from its 2001 release through hacks, mods, emulations, homebrew afterlives. In 2002, Nintendo of America launched an international marketing campaign for the Game Boy Advance that revolved around the slogan “Who Are You?”—asking potential buyers which Nintendo character, game, or even device they identified with and attempting to sell a new product by exploiting players' nostalgic connections to earlier ones. Today, nearly two decades after its release, and despite the development of newer and more powerful systems, Nintendo's Game Boy Advance lives on, through a community that continues to hack, modify, emulate, make, break, remake, redesign, trade, use, love, and play with the platform. In this book Alex Custodio traces the network of hardware and software afterlives of the Game Boy Advance platform. Each chapter considers a component of this network—hardware, software, peripheral, or practice—that illuminates the platform's unique features as a computational system and a cultural artifact. Examining the evolution of the design and architecture of Nintendo's handhelds and home consoles, and the constraints imposed on developers and players, for example, Custodio finds that Nintendo essentially embeds nostalgia into its hardware. She explores Nintendo's expansion of the platform through interoperability; physical and affective engagement with the Game Boy Advance; portability, private space, and social interaction; the platformization of nostalgia; fan-generated content including homebrew, hacking, and hardware modding; and e-waste—the final afterlife of consumer electronics. Although the Game Boy Advance is neither the most powerful nor the most popular of Nintendo's handhelds, Custodio argues, it is the platform that most fundamentally embodies Nintendo's reliance on the aesthetics and materiality of nostalgia.
