Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Way of the Warrior Saint promotes self-sacrifice—or crucifixional living—as the cure for the modern fallacy of taking the easy route in life. Modeled on Jesus’ victory over death through His voluntary suffering on the cross, it spotlights heroes who through self-sacrifice became exceptional and reputable individuals. You don’t have to believe the tenets of the Christian faith to see that the mechanism of self-sacrifice is the way to find greatness within you. Even a cursory examination reveals that the Christ story serves as the model for all our great stories. The likes of Luke Skywalker, Jon Snow, Catniss, Tony Stark, Elsa, Harry Potter, Batman, Wonder Woman, Pinocchio, Horus and Perseus. All of our heroes found their victory through the sacrifice of self. But the crucifixional model isn’t just for the movies. We find the same message in sports, the kitchen, marriage and everywhere else we look. If you want to live a life based on wisdom in the service of others, you’ll find a refreshing Christian perspective that drives results in this book. “Personal achievement advice has been with us since time immemorial, but in The Way of the Warrior Saint, an American parish priest from Arizona, Fr. Chris Salamy, takes it to another level by overlaying a powerfully Christian teaching on top of the traditional wisdom of the ages. His unique message for exceptional living, through what he terms a crucifixional life, is an important concept and a must read, especially for all dads and younger men.” —Dean G. Popps, former Assistant Secretary of the United States Army “The Way of the Warrior Saint is a helpful read for anyone who is trying to put faith into action. It is filled with real life challenges, engaging stories, solid principles, and practical tips to help the reader navigate life’s uncertainties with clear direction. Father Chris distills his years of ministry experience into memorable and applicable ‘takeaways’ that can help each one of us and all of us live a life that honors God and serves others.” —Tim Tassopoulos, President and COO, Chick-fil-A, Inc. “The Way of the Warrior Saint is a work of art. Fr. Chris identifies the missing link in our lives that allows us to conquer anything and live successfully. The concept of living a crucifixional life to overcome and win is genius and a tool that everyone should embody. This book is a must read for anyone that has faced challenges and wants to live more powerfully.” —Dr. Eric J. Scroggins, author of Vision Blockers, life & business coach, CEO of EricScroggins.com “In The Way of the Warrior Saint, Fr. Chris draws from his personal experiences to paint a vivid and compelling case for taking up the ‘crucifixional’ way of life. Not only does Fr. Chris inspire his reader but he also gently guides them towards a fuller Christian life. I highly recommend this often humorous and bare-knuckled book by one of the Church’s preeminent pastors it will engage every reader who wants to live courageously for Christ.” —Father Evan Armatas, Host of Orthodoxy Live on Ancient Faith Radio and author of Toolkit for Spiritual Growth: A Practical Guide to Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving

Book excerpt: The Way of the Warrior Saint is the book that heralds self-sacrifice, or, crucifixional living, as the cure for the modern fallacy of taking the easy route in life. Modeled on Jesus' victory over Death through His voluntary suffering on the Cross, it spotlights real-life heroes who through self-sacrifice became exceptional and reputable individuals. Readers are hungry for something more than a self-help book which so often focuses on self-betterment rather than this counterintuitive approach to life. Written in a conversational tone for a general adult audience of any educational background, readers will find the anecdotes, imagery and biblical exegesis both moving and relatable. Though presented with a Christian perspective, The Way of the Warrior Saint shares universal wisdom that enables peoples of all faith traditions the ability to connect. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Walter's study of the cult and iconography of Byzantine warrior saints - George, Demetrius, the two Theodores, and dozens more - is at once encyclopaedic and interpretative, and the first comprehensive study of the subject. The author delineates their origins and development as a distinctive category of saint, showing that in its definitive form this coincides with the apogee of the Byzantine empire in the 10th-11th centuries. He establishes a repertory, particularly of their commemorations in synaxaries and their representations in art, and describes their iconographical types and the functions ascribed to them once enrolled in the celestial army: support for the terrestrial army in its offensive campaigns, and a new protective role when the Byzantine Empire passed to the defensive. The survey highlights the lack of historicity among the Byzantines in their approach to the lives of these saints and their terrestrial careers. An epilogue briefly treats the analogous traditions in the cultures of neighbouring peoples. Walter draws attention to the development of an echelon of military saints, notably in church decoration, which provides the surest basis for defining their specificity; also to the way in which they were depicted, generally young, handsome and robust, and frequently 'twinned' in pairs, so calling attention to the importance of camaraderie among soldiers. At the same time, this work opens a new perspective on the military history of the Byzantine Empire. Its ideology of war consistently followed that of the Israelites; protected and favoured by divine intervention, there was no occasion to discuss the morality of a 'just war'. Consequently, when considering Byzantine methods of warfare, due attention should be given to the important role which they attributed to celestial help in their military campaigns.

It’s organized into two full school years, with each saint’s story falling on or near his or her special day so that each story can be a springboard to a creative seasonal teaching unit or small festival. Book excerpt: It began with voices -- St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret speaking to an ordinary farmer's daughter. Inspired to aid the future King Charles VII, whose right to the throne had been denied by the English in the Hundred Years War, Joan of Arc made her journey clad in male attire. Theologians testified to the veracity of her divine claims, and she was furnished with a host of troops. But how did she achieve the military feats that made her a legend? Stephen W. Richey offers a unique look at this remarkable woman. Joan of Are rapidly matured into a true battle commander who spoke forcefully in war councils, made decisions, and gave orders that were obeyed -- resulting in a stunning series of victories for her army. She achieved this feat by virtue of her unschooled but intuitive genius for war, a charismatic personality that inspired her soldiers to heroic feats, and her ability to exploit a unique set of lucky circumstances. Drawing on eyewitness accounts of Joan's comrades-in-arms and the author's own military experience, Richey goes beyond what Joan did in her amazing career, analyzing how she performed her martial feats. The first study in English to dig deeper into the mechanics of Joan's military career, and the first English treatment by a professional soldier with battle-field experience, this vivid account explores Joan's achievements in winning the loyalty of her men.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conquest and Community, by prize-winning historian Shahid Amin, is a kaleidoscopic look into one of the most divisive issues in South Asian history: the Turkic conquest of the subcontinent and the subsequent spread of Muslim rule. Covering more than eight hundred years of history, the book centers around the enduringly popular saint Ghazi Miyan, the youthful and lovable soldier of Islam to whom shrines have been erected all over the country. After detailing the warrior saint s supposed exploits, Amin charts the various ways he has been remembered throughout the last millennium. As he shows, the charming stories, ballads, and proverbs that grew up around him domesticated the bloody conquest and made it appear both virtuous and familial. Amin brings the story of Ghazi Miyan s long afterlife into the contemporary period through his ethnographic analysis of the still-active shrines as sites of interreligious public piety. What is at first glance a story of just one mythical figure becomes through Amin s thoughtful treatment an allegory for the history of Hindu-Muslim relations over an astonishingly long period of time. As the Muslim conquest of India is being mobilized for dangerously polarizing political ends in India today, this nonsectarian account of religious strife will be a timely and sane contribution to the vexed historical debate."

Book excerpt: For generations, Central Asian Muslims have told legends of medieval rulers who waged war, died in battle, and achieved sainthood. Among the Uyghurs of East Turkistan (present-day Xinjiang, China), some of the most beloved legends tell of the warrior-saint Satuq Bughra Khan and his descendants, the rulers of the Qarakhanid dynasty. To this day, these tales are recited at the saints' shrines and retold on any occasion. Warrior Saints of the Silk Road introduces this rich literary tradition, presenting the first complete English translation of the Qarakhanid narrative cycle along with an accessible commentary. At once mesmerizing, moving, and disturbing, these legends are essential texts in Central Asia's religious heritage as well as fine, enduring works of mystical literature.

It is Christian religion that preaches: ""Resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also"" (Matt. 5:39). Moreover, it was naked and defenseless Christians who were thrown in lion cages for the amusement of Roman spectators. Humble and lenient as it was, their prayer to God was the one and only support they had. In their prayers they would ask mercy to come even upon their tormentors who had no other fault but being incapable of having deeper insight into the future. Violence was completely alien to that religion."

Book excerpt: This volume examines Saint George’s intertwined traditions in the competing states of the eastern Mediterranean and Transcaucasia, demonstrating how rival conceptions of this well-known saint became central to Crusader, Eastern Christian, and Islamic medieval visual cultures. Saint George Between Empires links the visual cultures of Byzantium, North Africa, the Levant, Syria, and the Caucasus during the Crusader era to redraw our picture of interfaith relations and artistic networks. Heather Badamo recovers and recontextualizes a vast body of images and literature—from etiquette manuals and romances to miracle accounts and chronicles—to describe the history of Saint George during a period of religious and political fragmentation, between his “rise” to cross-cultural prominence in the eleventh century and his “globalization” in the fifteenth. In Badamo’s analysis, George emerges as an exemplar of cross-cultural encounter and global translation. Featuring important new research on monuments and artworks that are no longer available to scholars as a result of the occupation of Syria and parts of Iraq, Saint George Between Empires will be welcomed by scholars of Byzantine, medieval, Islamic, and Eastern Christian art and cultural studies.
