Book excerpt: Preaching mediates the word of God into a cultural matrix. And no American preaching has done so more effectively and powerfully than African American preaching, claims noted homiletician James Harris. Known for its rhetorical strength, social-justice orientation, and dead-on connection to the community's lived experience, black preaching is here analyzed and proposed as a model for all preaching. Harris grounds black preaching in the self-understanding of the historic black church and its most prominent preachers, from Martin Luther King Jr. to Samuel Proctor. Harris also explores the hermeneutical and aesthetic dimensions of preaching, especially at the intersection of sacred text and the broader culture. He then lays out the specific distinguishing characteristics of black preaching, including verbal cadence and rhythm, use of gestures, and, most thoroughly, the narrative model of the sermon. His last chapter, ''Preaching Plainly,'' provides specific instructions on how to put the sermon together employing this model.

Book excerpt: Those who carefully read the first thirteen verses of the tenth chapter of Romans cannot fail to perceive the logical order and marvellous clearness with which the Holy Ghost there sets forth the Way of Life. It is the aim of this little book to follow that order, and in some feeble measure to reflect that clearness. Hence the Scriptures are closely followed at every step of the argument, because they alone can guide our feet in the paths of peace. - Preface.

Book excerpt: "While it is true that God is Judge, it is also true in a certain sense that man is judge, for you are deciding tonight, or some time in this life, exactly what God will decide on the Judgment Day. It is simply a question, What are you and I going to do with Jesus Christ the Savior? Will we accept Him or reject Him? Will we let God save us or remain damned? A great many people sneer at the idea of damnation, and say that just because God is love, He is not going to damn anybody on the Judgment Day. God never did damn any one and never will. We are condemned - God came to save, and the question that you and I must decide is whether we are going to let God save us, or remain lost. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost." - Simon Peter Long Simon Peter Long (1860-1929) was a student of Matthias Loy. He attended Capital University and the Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary (Ohio Synod) in Columbus and at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (General Council). Loy served as a pastor from 1886 to 1929, President of Lima College 1898-1903 and Professor and President of the Chicago Lutheran Bible School. Book excerpt: "A very interesting glimpse at everyday cooking in the daily life of 18th–19th century England, with many helpful tips, tricks, and recipes (for the day). The language is enjoyable and the information contained is substantial." — Jefferson-Madison Regional Library System Revised and republished many times since its 1747 debut, this cookbook was a bestseller in England and the United States for more than 100 years. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned copies, and Benjamin Franklin even translated some of its recipes into French in hopes of attaining a taste of home while abroad. Author Hannah Glasse dismisses French cookery, the leading cuisine of her day, as inefficient for servants and middle- to lower-class cooks, citing its fussiness, expense, and waste. Instead, Mrs. Glasse focuses on standard Anglo-American fare, from soups and gravies to cakes and jellies, all simple dishes, prepared in a straightforward manner. In addition to practical advice on meat selection, carving, and basic cooking skills, this historically fascinating document offers tips on preparing food for the ill, cooking and food storage on ships, and making soaps and scents for the home. Historians, cooks, and all lovers of gastronomy will appreciate this glimpse into the kitchens of a bygone era.
