Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Water-Fowl Family The males Of a number Of varieties of ducks, however, when full-plumaged in the late fall and winter, are unsurpassed in beauty of coloring; an attire that is retained until incubation has begun. About this time, the birds moult, the male assuming a dress more or less closely resembling the female. During the moulting period for a while many of our water-fowl are helpless, the large pinions of the wing having been lost. Now every protection against the depredations of the natives and other enemies is essential, and hence nature's provision in the change of color. The males of many of our water-fowl, after incubation has been estab lished, separate from the females, and gather by themselves on neighboring bodies Of water, where greater security is afforded than the shores and marshes selected for nesting purposes could give. The female attends to all of the duties of nesting and hatching, bringing up the brood, and leading them south when an all-provident nature directs the weary flight. In the different species Of geese and swan both birds divide the duties of nesting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In addition to the large collection of North American birds contained in the Field Columbian Museum, by courtesy of my friends, Dr. J. A. Allen and Prof. Robert Ridgway, the collections of the Smithsonian Institution and the American Museum of Natural History were always open to me, as well as the splendid private collection of Mr. William Brewster, at Cambridge, Mass. A few species which occur in Greenland, but which have not been observed else where ia North America, and rare exotic stragglers have been excluded from the Key, but are given in their. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pigeon Diseases: With a Chapter on Feeding This treatise on pigeon diseases and feeding management is published in response to many inquiries which have reached the office of Pigeons & Pigeon Flying for information upon the various phases of this subject. In the routine of answering these inquiries, it has been found that no one book heretofore has covered this subject, and much time has been consumed in searching through various pamphlets and, in some cases making inquiries among veterinarians and physicians seeking for remedies and treatments for specific diseases. From this experience the author has been persuaded to compile this information and place it before the pigeon public in the present form in the hope that it will promote the cause of pigeon keeping by lessening the losses, as well as relieving many of our pets from unnecessary suffering. On account of the multitude of sources from which this material has been gathered, it has been impossible to give full credit to the source of the information in every instance. In fact some of the physicians did not want to be quoted. But in cases where the information was obtained from other works, full credit has been given. Many of the remedies and treatments are original and all of such have been tested and tried in actual "fussing" with sick animals in the author's possession. This little work is offered to the pigeon fraternity in the hope that it will be a real benfit and, if any reader finds it lacking, it is desired that he report his experience to the author, to the end that supplements may be added containing information covering every possible phase of this subject.
