Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War With Mexico, Vol. 1 of 2 But it will not do to base future action upon the results of experience, unless, indeed, the part which fortune has borne has been fairly considered, and it therefore becomes more than ever important that the record should be exact for the continuance of peace is always uncertain, and governments and people are prone to adopt one course of policy in wars, to a certain degree, regardless of the diverse nature of their enemies. Different views of mili tary matters, which may very truly and properly be taken by writers viewing them from different points, may assist in developing the truth. Cer tainly many written with good intention are re quired, when some are erroneous on account of in accuracies purposely set forth for the furtherance of partial interests. The present work has been mainly prepared during a period of respite from ordinary profes sioual duties. It is feared that the time has been too short for the undertaking, in consideration of its magnitude and the importance of the subject, but the time at my disposal has nearly expired, and it must be presented as it is. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the War Between Mexico and the United States, Vol. 1: With a Preliminary View of Its Origin The war which broke out between the United States of North America and the Mexican Republic, in the spring of 1846, is an event of great importance in the history of the world. Profound peace had reigned among Christian nations, since the downfall of Napoleon; and, with the exception of internal discords in France, Belgium, Poland and Greece, the civilized world had cause to believe that mankind would henceforth resort to the cabinet rather than the field for the settlement of international disputes. The recent conflicts between the French and the Arabs in Algeria, and between the British and Indian races, have been characterized by ferocity and endurance. But, it will be recollected these encounters took place between nations unequal alike in religion, morals, law, and civilization. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States and Mexico, Vol. 1: 1821 1848; A History of the Relations Between the Two Countries From the Independence of Mexico to the Close of the War With the United States The events which led up to the war between the United States and Mexico, with all its momentous consequences to both nations, have been very generally misapprehended. On the American side the war has been treated in histories of the United States as a mere episode in an all-embracing struggle over slavery, which it was not. Mexican historians have treated it as the unescapable result of American aggression in Texas, which it was not. But each of these views embodies a sort of half-truth, and it becomes therefore both difficult and important to disentangle the whole truth. Until very recently a thorough study of the relations between the two countries from the time Mexican independence was achieved down to the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, was not possible. In the first place, the mere fact of the existence of negro slavery in the United States imparted an element of intense bitterness into every discussion of the subject in this country. The North hated and dreaded the extension of slavery, and even before the Mexican War was over the fear that the newly acquired territories - New Mexico and California - might becomes slave states, gave rise to passionate debates which continued until the breaking out of the Civil War. Thereafter the prejudices and passions which were awakened or inflamed by four years of murderous warfare prevented an impartial view until the generation which had so effectually dealt with slavery had nearly passed away. Most of its histories can be divided into two classes. First come those written immediately after the conclusion Of peace. The authors of these painted everything red, white, and blue, and chanted songs of glory. Then come the histories written under what may be called Abolition influence. The authors Of these painted everything coal black and passed by on the other side. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican War IT has been wisely remarked by a distinguished American statesman, that the commencement of the Mexican War was the opening of a new volume of American history. Nations, like individuals, are often borne along in their progress, without pausing to consider the particular acts which are to shape and control their future destiny; and perhaps there is no subject on which the public mind is less likely to act with caution and deliberation than on the momentous question of peace or war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the War With Mexico The war of the United States with Mexico awakened the military ardor of American citizens, which had been slumbering since the contest with Great Britain in 1812 - 14. It stirred their imagina tion with the romance which has ever been con nected with the scenes of Spanish conquest, height ened by the strange histories and vestiges of the most ancient people and civilization of the New World. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexican Letters Written During the Progress of the Late War Between the United States and Mexico, Vol. 1 Determine. As 'to Mexico, I have long been of opinion, that we could never have a peace on a last ing foundation, without a war. If that neighboring and jealous people had still remained united to the Spanish monarchy, it would have been the same thing. This event was but removed farther off, or post poned by the acquisition of Louisiana and the Mis sissippi, but soon or late, a collision was inevitable; and nothing else would determine the terms on which we should live in future, as neighbors. To other persons, all this may appear Visionary and idle, the mere dreams of the closet. Be it so - let my opin ions pass for what they are worth they are, atleast.
