Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War With Mexico, Vol. 1 of 2 But it will not do to base future action upon the results of experience, unless, indeed, the part which fortune has borne has been fairly considered, and it therefore becomes more than ever important that the record should be exact for the continuance of peace is always uncertain, and governments and people are prone to adopt one course of policy in wars, to a certain degree, regardless of the diverse nature of their enemies. Different views of mili tary matters, which may very truly and properly be taken by writers viewing them from different points, may assist in developing the truth. Cer tainly many written with good intention are re quired, when some are erroneous on account of in accuracies purposely set forth for the furtherance of partial interests. The present work has been mainly prepared during a period of respite from ordinary profes sioual duties. It is feared that the time has been too short for the undertaking, in consideration of its magnitude and the importance of the subject, but the time at my disposal has nearly expired, and it must be presented as it is. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican War IT has been wisely remarked by a distinguished American statesman, that the commencement of the Mexican War was the opening of a new volume of American history. Nations, like individuals, are often borne along in their progress, without pausing to consider the particular acts which are to shape and control their future destiny; and perhaps there is no subject on which the public mind is less likely to act with caution and deliberation than on the momentous question of peace or war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the War With Mexico The war of the United States with Mexico awakened the military ardor of American citizens, which had been slumbering since the contest with Great Britain in 1812 - 14. It stirred their imagina tion with the romance which has ever been con nected with the scenes of Spanish conquest, height ened by the strange histories and vestiges of the most ancient people and civilization of the New World. It allured the adventurous spirit of the Northern soldier by the attractions of a tropical cli mate and a land of superb mountain-ranges veined with silver and gold, and of valleys and plains rich with Southern fruits and flowers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico in Peace and War It was never intended that "Mexico in Peace and War" should be limited in scope to a mere "war book," although many months ago it was thought that war was imminent, and quite probable, before a solution of existing difficulties could be brought about, or before this volume could go to press. For several years the eyes of the civilized world have been directed toward Mexico because of the revolution of the masses against certain classes which had been fiercely waged. The American public seemed eager for details of this civil war, and such details were furnished by the daily press. Then came a demand for all kinds of information about Mexico. What seemed necessary to the situation was a popular, readable book that would embrace all the facts concerning this land of conquest, revolution and treasure. Such a history must necessarily be authentic and comprehensive. It was part of the plan that should war actually take place between the United States and Mexico ere its publication, allowance would be made in this history for the incidents and causes leading up to and into the beginning of such a war. In the event of conflict it would be only reasonable to expect that whether or not the opposing forces should be in actual conflict, or in a position of armed belligerency pending peaceful settlement, the ultimate solution would be long drawn out; and to postpone the volume for a "last word" of war developments would be to deprive the public of an immense fund of information never before issued in popular form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican War, by an English Soldier: Comprising Incidents and Adventures in the United States and Mexico With the American Army The writers of both classes have "cast discreetly into shade" whatever would "offend the eye" of the readers they sought to appreciate. As a partial remedy for the evil complained of by the gallant officer above referred to, the publishers put forth the present volume. If it does not rise to the dignity of history, it at least partakes of that faithfulness of record and clearness of detail which give history its value. The author is manifestly superior to that class of his countrymen ordinarily found in the rank and file of an army, in intelligence, in education, in observation, in descriptive and narrative power, and in candor and liberality of sentiment. Something of foreign misapprehension, possibly some degree of foreign preference or prejudice, may be found in his pages; and it is by no means improbable that some of his criticisms upon men and events may be unjust; but there is throughout the volume an evident desire to be just as well as independent, both in criticism and in narration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the War Between the United States and Mexico: From the Commencement of Hostilities to the Ratification of the Treaty of Peace I have also derived much valuable information from the letters of the regular and occasional correspondents of differ ent public journals, and, particularly, those of the New Or leans press. I have often found these, however, conflicting very materially with the official statements, and, as, from the nature of the case, was to be presumed, more or less tinged with the gossip of the camp. It has, therefore, been some times extremely difficult to separate the real from the fanci ful; and I can hardly flatter myself with the hope that I have entirely avoided errors, though I trust none may be found, impairing the general fidelity of the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the War Between Mexico and the United States, Vol. 1: With a Preliminary View of Its Origin The war which broke out between the United States of North America and the Mexican Republic, in the spring of 1846, is an event of great importance in the history of the world. Profound peace had reigned among Christian nations, since the downfall of Napoleon; and, with the exception of internal discords in France, Belgium, Poland and Greece, the civilized world had cause to believe that mankind would henceforth resort to the cabinet rather than the field for the settlement of international disputes. The recent conflicts between the French and the Arabs in Algeria, and between the British and Indian races, have been characterized by ferocity and endurance. But, it will be recollected these encounters took place between nations unequal alike in religion, morals, law, and civilization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete History of the Mexican War: Its Causes, Conduct, and Consequences; Comprising an Account of the Various Military and Naval Operations, From Its Commencement to the Treaty of Peace IN relation to the origin of the Mexican War, which now forms an important part of the history of our coun try, public opinion has been divided, and much affected by the political bias of the two leading pmties; so that it is impossible for an impartial chronicler to please both, and difficult even to avoid giving offence to either. I have therefore reviewed the causes which led to the war between the sister republics, unaffected by any party preferences or prejudices whatever; and after a careful examination of all the points at issue, and the diplomatic action of the two governments, have endea voured at least to arrive at just and candid conclusions. In the record of the events of the war - which may challenge comparison with the military achievements of any age or nation - I have endeavoured to award to each arm of the service - cavalry, artillery, and infantry, and to our navy - the meed of praise it has so nobly won; and if, in any case, the claims of particular persons may have been overlooked, it is to be hoped that the circum stance will not be attributed to a disposition to do injus tice to any. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of the Causes and Consequences of the Mexican War The writer is a believer in the Divine authority of the Scriptures - he acknowledges no standard of right and wrong but the Will of God, and denies the expediency of any act which is forbidden by laws dictated by Infinite Wisdom and Goodness. This avowal will prepare the reader to find in the following pages many opinions not having the stamp of public approbation. Patriotism, honor, glory, and national prosperity, are terms to which the Christian and the mere politician attach different ideas, and estimate by different standards. He who admits the authority of the Bible will not readily acknowledge that whatever is "highly esteemed among men" must be right, nor that what is unpopular is, of course, wrong. In the following Review, the public conduct and opinions of public men are freely and fearlessly canvassed, but in no instance, it is hoped and believed, at the expense of truth. Most of its histories can be divided into two classes. First come those written immediately after the conclusion Of peace. The authors of these painted everything red, white, and blue, and chanted songs of glory. Then come the histories written under what may be called Abolition influence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Review of the Mexican War: Embracing the Causes of the War, the Responsibility of Its Commencement, the Purposes of the American Government in Its Prosecution, Its Benefits and Its Evils It is the object of this essay to exhibit the true character of the war in which our country has lately been engaged. It aims to present in a clear and concise manner the facts and considerations which will enable the reader to form a correct opinion concerning the causes of this contest, and the motives and the excuses for its prosecution. It is its further design to give a view of the consequences of the war; to examine the benefits which have been attributed to it, and the evils, near and remote, of which it has been the cause; to present the duty and the true glory and ambition of the United States; and to point out the manner in which alone peace can be established among civilized nations. It contains no allusion to political parties. It is no part of its object to inquire what share belongs to each of the glory or the shame of this war. The subject of slavery it has been the endeavor of the author to avoid. The belief that the acquisition of territory for the sole purpose of extending and perpetuating slavery has been the undivided purpose of our government and people for twenty-five years; that for this Texas was settled; that urged by this motive alone, our citizens flew to the assistance of that State in her efforts to establish her independence, and government winked at their participation in her struggle; that for this alone Texas was annexed; that for this alone war was undertaken; that government would never have sought this contest, had it apprehended that any portion of the territory which it desired would ever be secured to freedom; this belief is one to which he cannot subscribe.
