Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Campaign in France and Flanders, 1915 In the previous volume of this work, which dealt with the doings of the British Army in France and Flanders during the year 1914, I ventured to claim that a great deal of it was not only accurate but that it was very precisely correct in its detail. This claim has been made good, for although many military critics and many distinguished soldiers have read it there has been no instance up to date of any serious correction. Emboldened by this I am now putting forward an account of the doings of 1915, which will be equally detailed and, as I hope, equally accurate. In the late autumn a third volume will carry the story up to the end of 1916, covering the series of battles upon the Somme. The three years of war may be roughly divided into the year of defence, the year of equilibrium, and the year of attack. This volume concerns it self with the second, which in its very nature must be less dramatic than the first or third. Book Synopsis The Battle of the Ypres-Comines Canal 1940 by : Jerry Murland
Download or read book The Battle of the Ypres-Comines Canal 1940 written by Jerry Murland and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2020-02-19 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This WWII history and battlefield guide explores the significant yet lesser-known WWII combat along the Ypres-Comines Canal during the Battle of France. Known in some accounts as the Battle of Wijtschaete, the confrontation along the Ypres-Comines Canal in 1940 is too often overlooked despite its significance. The sacrifice of the battalions on the canal was vital to the all-important retreat to Dunkirk. The four-day conflict likely saved the British Expeditionary Force from almost complete destruction. Although there was fighting north of Ypres along the Canal Van Ieper Naar De Ijzer, the actual Battle of the Ypres-Comines Canal took place to the south. Three British brigades were pitted against three German divisions along the disused canal which runs from Comines in the south to Ypres in the north. Military historian Jerry Murland covers the order of battle of the British and German units engaged in the fighting. With more than 150 historic and modern photographs, ten maps, visits to eight CWGC Cemeteries, plus three car tours and two walking itineraries, this volume is an essential companion for exploring the area. Visitors will no doubt wish to combine a visit to the First World War sites around Ypres with the fighting along the canal in 1940, recognizing many places that were fought over in both wars.

This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standing by War-Time Reflections in France and Flanders Moreover, of course, this is to set aside the fact that no one, even in the regular Army itself, knew what this war would be like. It is one thing to belong to a regular army whether in peace Or in War, and quite another to be a unit in a nation mobilised from top to bottom all but irrespective even of sex. Besides, no living Englishman had experienced a Western European War unless as an isolated volunteer in 1870, and a soldier's life in a foreign civilised country was as strange as combat with highly trained conscript armies in the field itself. All this is upon the surface, but it might be supposed that the ground of such an experience had been fairly well covered by now. Our authors have revealed to us the making Of Kitchener's Army -it sounds quite far away now; every phase of life in the trenches, on the sea, and in the air even the experiences of and chaplains, the latter everywhere. I might well have asked myself where I came in. In fact, however, this book has been written without the posing of such a question at all.
