Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bella is very surprised one morning to discover her house has moved in the night – not a lot, just a little. Her parents are too busy to notice, but even they can't pretend it's not happening when they wake up a few days later to find their house on the banks of a lake. Night after night the house moves and the family wakes to a new location. It is all very mysterious. Bella discusses it with her beloved Grandpa, and he advises her to keep a close eye on thing. Heeding his words, Bella stays awake one night to try and uncover the house's secret. When all is quiet the house begins to move, faster and faster through the streets, and catching its reflection in the shop windows as they whizz by Bella discovers the house has legs – long hairy legs with knobbly knees and big feet. The house walks and runs, then settles back down before the morning. Each time it stops, it stops near water. When Bella realises that her room at the top of the house is built from Grandpa's old boat, she finally knows what the house is looking for. It seeks the sea. So Bella dons the captain's hat her Grandpa has given her and guides the house safely to the shore, where finally they are home. And sometimes, just sometimes, Grandpa and Bella take the house to sea.

Book excerpt: “Part post-apocalypse, part road-trip, part sword-and-sorcery . . . One of my favorite adventure novels of all time.” —Cory Doctorow At four-thirty one Saturday afternoon the laws of physics as we know them underwent a change. Electronic devices, cars, industries stopped. The lights went out. Any technology more complicated than a lever or pulley simply wouldn't work. A new set of rules took its place—laws that could only be called magic. Ninety-nine percent of humanity has simply vanished. Cities lie abandoned. Supernatural creatures wander the silenced achievements of a halted civilization. Pete Garey has survived the Change and its ensuing chaos. He wanders the southeastern United States, scavenging, lying low. Learning. One day he makes an unexpected friend: a smartassed unicorn with serious attitude. Pete names her Ariel and teaches her how to talk, how to read, and how to survive in a world in which a unicorn horn has become a highly prized commodity. When they learn that there is a price quite literally on Ariel's head, the two unlikely companions set out from Atlanta to Manhattan to confront the sorcerer who wants her horn. And so begins a haunting, epic, and surprisingly funny journey through the remnants of a halted civilization in a desolated world.

Book Synopsis The Last Unicorn by : William deBuys
Download or read book The Last Unicorn written by William deBuys and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning author's quest to find and understand a creature as rare and enigmatic as any on Earth. In 1992, in a remote mountain range, a team of scientists discovered the remains of an unusual animal with exquisite long horns. It turned out to be a living species new to Western science -- a saola, the first large land mammal discovered in fifty years. Rare then and rarer now, a live saola had never been glimpsed by a Westerner in the wild when Pulitzer Prize finalist and nature writer William deBuys and conservation biologist William Robichaud set off to search for it in central Laos. Their team endured a punishing trek up and down white-water rivers and through mountainous terrain ribboned with the snare lines of armed poachers who roamed the forest, stripping it of wildlife. In the tradition of Bruce Chatwin, Colin Thubron, and Peter Matthiessen, The Last Unicorn chronicles deBuys's journey deep into one of the world's most remote places. It's a story rich with the joys and sorrows of an expedition into undiscovered country, pursuing a species as rare and elusive as the fabled unicorn. As is true with the quest for the unicorn, in the end the expedition becomes a search for something more: the essence of wildness in nature, evidence that the soul of a place can endure, and the transformative power of natural beauty.
