Book Synopsis The Atlas of Economic Complexity by : Ricardo Hausmann
Download or read book The Atlas of Economic Complexity written by Ricardo Hausmann and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-01-17 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maps capture data expressing the economic complexity of countries from Albania to Zimbabwe, offering current economic measures and as well as a guide to achieving prosperity Why do some countries grow and others do not? The authors of The Atlas of Economic Complexity offer readers an explanation based on "Economic Complexity," a measure of a society's productive knowledge. Prosperous societies are those that have the knowledge to make a larger variety of more complex products. The Atlas of Economic Complexity attempts to measure the amount of productive knowledge countries hold and how they can move to accumulate more of it by making more complex products. Through the graphical representation of the "Product Space," the authors are able to identify each country's "adjacent possible," or potential new products, making it easier to find paths to economic diversification and growth. In addition, they argue that a country's economic complexity and its position in the product space are better predictors of economic growth than many other well-known development indicators, including measures of competitiveness, governance, finance, and schooling. Using innovative visualizations, the book locates each country in the product space, provides complexity and growth potential rankings for 128 countries, and offers individual country pages with detailed information about a country's current capabilities and its diversification options. The maps and visualizations included in the Atlas can be used to find more viable paths to greater productive knowledge and prosperity.

Book Synopsis The World Atlas of Art Nouveau Architecture by : Ivan Bercedo
Download or read book The World Atlas of Art Nouveau Architecture written by Ivan Bercedo and published by Ediciones Polígrafa S.A.. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of years of research, this epic volume shows the global reach of the Art Nouveau idiom Modernismo, Jugendstil or Art Nouveau--the different names given to Art Nouveau in different geographical contexts highlight the territorial scope and diversity of the style, but also its common features: it was new, modern, young and groundbreaking. Whether in Austria, Spain, Denmark or Russia, Art Nouveau defined itself as something that opposed tradition and broke with the past. Rejecting a classicizing academic grammar, and reaching deep into the fantastical for inspiration (from the imagined history of the medieval to the Orientalist exotic), artists and architects such as Victor Horta, Hector Guimard, Viollet-le-Duc, William Morris, Otto Wagner, Samuel Bing and the Goncourt brothers created a new style with a holistic vision, embracing architecture, painting, graphic art, interior design, textiles, ceramics and metalwork. Imaginative form was matched by innovative building techniques. The architects of Art Nouveau were some of the first to experiment with building with iron, glass, pottery and prefabricated concrete; their buildings offer instructive models of industrial development and collaborative design. Beautifully illustrated and exhaustively researched, The World Atlas of Art Nouveau Architecture brings together a selection of key Art Nouveau buildings in a truly global survey that includes, for the first time, examples of the style outside of Europe. Exemplars of the form were chosen through a rigorous selection process involving a panel of expert advisors with specialist input from each world region. A general introduction to the style grounds the selection, and short essays explain how Art Nouveau differed in different cities and countries. The World Atlas of Art Nouveau Architecture honors one of the world's first truly global modern art movements.
Book Synopsis What Is an Event? by : Robin Wagner-Pacifici
Download or read book What Is an Event? written by Robin Wagner-Pacifici and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world of breaking news, where at almost any moment our everyday routine can be interrupted by a faraway event. Events are central to the way that individuals and societies experience life. Even life’s inevitable moments—birth, death, love, and war—are almost always a surprise. Inspired by the cataclysmic events of September 11, Robin Wagner-Pacifici presents here a tour de force, an analysis of how events erupt and take off from the ground of ongoing, everyday life, and how they then move across time and landscape. What Is an Event? ranges across several disciplines, systematically analyzing the ways that events emerge, take shape, gain momentum, flow, and even get bogged down. As an exploration of how events are constructed out of ruptures, it provides a mechanism for understanding eventful forms and flows, from the micro-level of individual life events to the macro-level of historical revolutions, contemporary terrorist attacks, and financial crises. Wagner-Pacifici takes a close look at a number of cases, both real and imagined, through the reports, personal narratives, paintings, iconic images, political posters, sculptures, and novels they generate and through which they live on. What is ultimately at stake for individuals and societies in events, Wagner-Pacifici argues, are identities, loyalties, social relationships, and our very experiences of time and space. What Is an Event? provides a way for us all—as social and political beings living through events, and as analysts reflecting upon them—to better understand what is at stake in the formations and flows of the events that mark and shape our lives.
Download or read book Atlas of Knowledge written by Katy Borner and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The power of mapping: principles for visualizing knowledge, illustrated by many stunning large-scale, full-color maps. Maps of physical spaces locate us in the world and help us navigate unfamiliar routes. Maps of topical spaces help us visualize the extent and structure of our collective knowledge; they reveal bursts of activity, pathways of ideas, and borders that beg to be crossed. This book, from the author of Atlas of Science, describes the power of topical maps, providing readers with principles for visualizing knowledge and offering as examples forty large-scale and more than 100 small-scale full-color maps. Today, data literacy is becoming as important as language literacy. Well-designed visualizations can rescue us from a sea of data, helping us to make sense of information, connect ideas, and make better decisions in real time. In Atlas of Knowledge, leading visualization expert Katy Börner makes the case for a systems science approach to science and technology studies and explains different types and levels of analysis. Drawing on fifteen years of teaching and tool development, she introduces a theoretical framework meant to guide readers through user and task analysis; data preparation, analysis, and visualization; visualization deployment; and the interpretation of science maps. To exemplify the framework, the Atlas features striking and enlightening new maps from the popular “Places & Spaces: Mapping Science” exhibit that range from “Key Events in the Development of the Video Tape Recorder” to “Mobile Landscapes: Location Data from Cell Phones for Urban Analysis” to “Literary Empires: Mapping Temporal and Spatial Settings of Victorian Poetry” to “Seeing Standards: A Visualization of the Metadata Universe.” She also discusses the possible effect of science maps on the practice of science.
Download or read book Arthrogryposis written by Lynn T. Staheli and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-04-28 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term arthrogryposis describes a range of congenital contractures that lead to childhood deformities. It encompasses a number of syndromes and sporadic deformities that are rare individually but collectively are not uncommon. Yet, the existing medical literature on arthrogryposis is sparse and often confusing. The aim of this book is to provide individuals affected with arthrogryposis, their families, and health care professionals with a helpful guide to better understand the condition and its therapy. With this goal in mind, the editors have taken great care to ensure that the presentation of complex clinical information is at once scientifically accurate, patient oriented, and accessible to readers without a medical background. The book is authored primarily by members of the medical staff of the Arthrogryposis Clinic at Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, one of the leading teams in the management of the condition, and will be an invaluable resource for both health care professionals and families of affected individuals.
