Book Synopsis A Geological and Geophysical Study of the Maunie Fault by : Milton Smith
Download or read book A Geological and Geophysical Study of the Maunie Fault written by Milton Smith and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wabash Valley Fault System is located near the eastern edge of the Illinois Basin in southeastern Illinois and southwestern Indiana. It extends in a north-northeasterly direction from the Cottage Grove Fault Zone and Rough Creek Graben, in southeastern Illinois and western Kentucky (Ault et al., 1979), into southwestern Indiana where it terminates (Sullivan et al., 1979). Within this fault system, there are 12 named faults and 3 named grabens in Illinois (Bristol and Treworgy, 1979; Sexton et al., 1986) with an additional 6 faults and 1 graben in Indiana (Sullivan et al., 1979). Recent earthquakes in the region show that the Wabash Valley Fault System is currently seismically active. Because earthquakes in the eastern and central United States typically do not rupture the surface, studies pertaining to faults in this area are significantly enhanced by using subsurface imaging techniques. Several different data types have been used for this study in order to get a more complete picture of the geology in this region. Data utilized for this study include: oil-well completion cards, petrophysical well logs, seismic reflection, and ground penetrating radar (GPR) profiles. These data have combined to show the increase of fault complexity as it approaches the surface. Bodziak (1999) interpreted two episodes of fault reactivation associated with Wabash Valley Faults. One episode of reactivation occurred post Pennsylvanian and the other episode occurred post Cretaceous and possibly Holocene. Both of which are seen in the data used in this study. The post Pennsylvanian reactivation is seen on cross section W-3 between wells 354 and 359. Here the fault shows both normal and reverse offsets. The change in the offset direction occurs between the Herrin #6 and Harrisburg #5 coal seams. Supporting data for the statement of post Cretaceous and potentially Holocene reactivation comes from the radar profiles collected for this study. These radar profiles show many small offset reverse faults. In conjunction with these are many small normal faults. Analysis of industry seismic data (seismic lines S-1 and S-2) shows that the Maunie fault has a maximum apparent displacement of 168 feet (51 meters) on the Cambrian Eau Claire formation decreasing to 80 feet (24 meters) on the lower Mississippian/upper Devonian New Albany formation. Continuing upwards and analyzing the borehole data, the maximum apparent displacement is 95 feet (29 meters) on the Pennsylvanian West Franklin formation located between wells 251 and 210 on cross section W-2. Using the ground penetrating radar data we see that the faults come close to surface, within 3 feet (1 meter) on profiles R-2 and R-5. They have less apparent displacement, a maximum of 4 feet (1.2 meters) on profile R-7. Also, there are occurrences where both normal and reverse faulting is imaged on radar profiles R-2, R-4, and R-5. These shallow faults occur within the Quaternary/Holocene sediments and represent evidence for geologically young fault activation.
Book Synopsis Plum River Fault Zone of Northwestern Illinois (Classic Reprint) by : Dennis R. Kolata
Download or read book Plum River Fault Zone of Northwestern Illinois (Classic Reprint) written by Dennis R. Kolata and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plum River Fault Zone of Northwestern Illinois The Plum River Fault Zone extends westward from Leaf River, Illinois, across Ogle and Carroll Counties to an area south of Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa. Field observations, well records, cores, and refraction seismic data from Illinois indicate that the fault zone is generally less than half a mile wide, with strata downthrown 100 to 400 feet on the north. The faulting occurred after Niagaran (middle Silurian) time and before mid-illinoian (pleistocene) time. Four minor structural features adjacent to the Plum River Fault Zone are herein named; they are the Forreston Dome, the Brookville Dome, the Leaf River Anticline, and the Uptons Cave Syncline. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketches of the Wabash Valley Occasionally a man arises who has the historical instinct and takes a per sonal delight in unearthing and preserving the history, folk lore and legends of preceding generations. Such a man is J. Wesley Whicker, the author of the sketches that are printed in this volume. The year 1916 being the centennial of Indiana's statehood, brought forth more than usual interest in Indiana state history, and knowing of Mr. Whicker's interest in and study of the history of the Wabash Valley, it was suggested that he write a series of articles for publication in The Attica Ledger. He readily acquiesced and as soon as they began to appear they attracted wide attention, being very extensively reprinted by other papers in western Indiana and eastern Illinois. The intention had been at first to make them only local in scope, but many of the incidents narrated were interwoven with larger incidents and almost before he was aware they had extended until they covered the greater part of the central Wabash Valley. As appreciation of his work grew there arose a demand that the sketches be put into permanent form and it is to meet that demand that this volume is printed. The issue is limited to two hundred copies, many of which will find a resting place in local libraries thruout the state. The sketches appear just as they did in the columns of The Ledger, and were often prepared hurriedly amid the press of other business, so that the literary critic may find in them much to criticize. However, since they re ect the intimate life of the people that developed one of the finest sections of the United States the critic will also find in them much of literary value in addition to their worth from the historical standpoint. Book Synopsis Geophysical Studies of the Herald-Phillipstown Fault and Other Shallow Structures Near Carmi, Illinois by : Shibaji Chatterjee
Download or read book Geophysical Studies of the Herald-Phillipstown Fault and Other Shallow Structures Near Carmi, Illinois written by Shibaji Chatterjee and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four seismic reflection profiles from the Wabash Valley area of southeastern Illinois successfully imaged the Herald-Phillipstown fault. From the reflection profiles and geophysical well logs, it is interpreted that the Herald-Phillipstown fault is an inverted flower structure. Structural contour maps as well as maps of various reflector surfaces are prepared herein using two way travel time as well as depth. These maps show that the reflectors are undulating in character. The nature of faults of the inverted flower structure as observed on the seismic reflection profiles indicates that there has been a change in the stress regime from extensional to compressional. Structural cross sections were generated using geophysical well logs from drill holes located along these seismic lines to analyze the nature of these faults at shallower depths. From these cross sections numerous shallow faults were observed and many of them can be correlated with those observed on seismic records indicating upward migration of basement penetrating faults into shallow younger sediments. Many of these faults, including the Herald-Phillipstown fault show evidences of reactivation.
