Book excerpt: The Complete Works of William Dampier: Containing Particular Descriptions of Life in the Torrid Zone at the Dawn of Modern Science and at the Intersection of the Golden Age of Sail, the Golden Age of Exploration, and the Golden Age of Piracy THE PIRATE-SCIENTIST WILLIAM DAMPIER (1651-1715) lived at a remarkable time in human history: at the dawn of modern science and at the intersection of three golden ages: the golden ages of sail, exploration, and piracy. Curious to see the world and keen to add to the world's sum total of useful knowledge, he ventured out upon the high seas. He kept a careful account of his adventures in the world's Torrid Zone, describing as he went the soil, rivers, harbours, tides, currents, winds, plants, fruits and animals of the lands he visited, together with the inhabitants, their customs, religion, government and trade. WILLIAM DAMPIER sailed the great southern Pacific ocean four times, was the third Englishman to circumnavigate the globe, was the first person to circumnavigate the globe three times, was the first person to visit six continents, captained England's first scientific expedition, and touched Australian shores nearly 100 years before Captain James Cook. His writing immediately made him famous throughout Europe and impacted England's great poets and writers: Lord Byron, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Daniel Defoe, and Jonathan Swift. His scientific efforts influenced the work of Charles Darwin, Alexander von Humboldt, Edmund Halley, and Matthew Flinders. His writing inspired the English to challenge the Spanish and Dutch dominance in the South Seas. He wrote of free trade a century before Adam Smith. He introduced important new words to the English language, words like: banana, barbeque, castaway, sea-breeze, and subspecies. He was once left for dead by a crew of vicious mutineers, but survived against all odds. Dampier was a poor pirate, but precisely because he was a pirate he was able to travel the world and discover true and lasting treasure: hard and useful foundational knowledge in the realms of science, natural history, economics and political economy, hydrography, botany, zoology, ethnography, anthropology, navigation, geography, map-making, literature, and language. INSIDE this volume you will find the complete written works of William Dampier: A New Voyage Round The World A Supplement of a Voyage Round The World Two Voyages To Campeachy A Discourse Of Winds A Voyage To New Holland A Continuation Of A Voyage To New Holland Captain Dampier's Vindication Of His Voyage To The South-Seas In The Ship St. George Available in the PIRATE JOURNAL COLLECTION The Complete Works of William Dampier: Includes A New Voyage Round the World, Voyages & Descriptions (containing: A Supplement of the Voyage Round the World, Two Voyages to Campeachy, and A Discourse of Wind), A Voyage to New Holland, A Continuation of a Voyage to New Holland, and Captain Dampier's Vindication of His Voyage to the South-Seas In the Ship St. George By William Dampier Wafer's New Voyage and Description of the Isthmus of Darien: The Story of His Exploits, Written by Himself By Lionel Wafer Ringrose's Buccaneers of America: The Dangerous Voyage and Bold Attempts of Captains Sharp, Watlin, Sawkins, Coxon, and Others, Performed Upon the Coasts of the South Sea: From The Journal Of Basil Ringrose By Basil Ringrose Captain Sharp's Journey Over the Isthmus of Darien and Expedition Into the South Seas: The Journal of His Expedition, Written by Himself By Bartholomew Sharp Cowley's Voyage Round the Globe: The Journal of His Adventures, Written by Himself By William Ambrosia Cowley

Book excerpt: 'A roaring tale ... remains as vivid and exciting today as it was on publication in 1697' Guardian The pirate and adventurer William Dampier circumnavigated the globe three times, and took notes wherever he went. This is his frank, vivid account of his buccaneering sea voyages around the world, from the Caribbean to the Pacific and East Indies. Filled with accounts of raids, escapes, wrecks and storms, it also contains precise observations of people, places, animals and food (including the first English accounts of guacamole, mango chutney and chopsticks). A bestseller on publication, this unique record of the colonial age influenced Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels and consequently the whole of English literature. Edited with an Introduction by Nicholas Thomas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Admiralty made William Dampier Captain of England's first official voyage of discovery. In a barely sea-worthy ship, Dampier sailed to the shores of New Holland. It was the second time he'd touch the shores of Australia. In the going out and returning, Dampier made numerous discoveries amongst the remotest of the East India Islands, the distant shores of New-Holland, and New-Guinea. Includes: maps and illustrations particular the voyage.Dampier shared these discoveries with an eager audience in these two volumes. The first of these two New Holland volumes was published in 1703 and the second six years later-after Dampier had returned from his third circumnavigation round the world. The voyage to New Holland saw Dampier complete his second circumnavigation of the world, a remark-able feat considering the ship he'd been assigned threatened to rot away under the crew's feet and, indeed, did sink while at anchor. Book excerpt: Background to Discovery recounts the great voyages of discovery, from Dampier to Cook, that excited such fervent political and popular interest in eighteenth-century Europe. Perhaps this book's greatest strength lies in its remarkable synthesis of both the achievements of European maritime exploration and the political, economic, and scientific motives behind it. Writing essays on the literary and artistic response to the voyages as well, the contributors collectively provide a rich source for historians, geographers, and anyone interested in the history of voyage and travel. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Darwin took his books aboard the Beagle. Swift and Defoe used his experiences as inspiration in writing Gulliver's Travels and Robinson Crusoe. Captain Cook relied on his observations while voyaging around the world. Coleridge called him a genius and "a man of exquisite mind." In the history of exploration, nobody has ventured further than Englishman William Dampier. Yet while the exploits of Cook, Shackleton, and a host of legendary explorers have been widely chronicled, those of perhaps the greatest are virtually invisible today-an omission that Diana and Michael Preston have redressed in this vivid, compelling biography. As a young man Dampier spent several years in the swashbuckling company of buccaneers in the Caribbean. At a time when surviving one voyage across the Pacific was cause for celebration, Dampier ultimately journeyed three times around the world; his bestselling books about his experiences were a sensation, influencing generations of scientists, explorers, and writers. He was the first to deduce that winds cause currents and the first to produce wind maps across the world, surpassing even the work of Edmund Halley. He introduced the concept of the "sub-species" that Darwin later built into his theory of evolution, and his description of the breadfruit was the impetus for Captain Bligh's voyage on the Bounty. Dampier reached Australia 80 years before Cook, and he later led the first formal expedition of science and discovery there. A Pirate of Exquisite Mind restores William Dampier to his rightful place in history-one of the pioneers on whose insights our understanding of the natural world was built.
