Book Synopsis The Virtuous and Violent Women of Seventeenth-century Massachusetts by : Emily C. K. Romeo
Download or read book The Virtuous and Violent Women of Seventeenth-century Massachusetts written by Emily C. K. Romeo and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dismantling the image of the peaceful and serene colonial goodwife and countering the assumption that New England was inherently less violent than other regions of colonial America, Emily C. K. Romeo offers a revealing look at acts of violence by Anglo-American women in colonial Massachusetts, from the everyday to the extraordinary. Using Essex County as a case study, Romeo deftly utilizes seventeenth- and eighteenth-century sources to demonstrate that Puritan women, both "virtuous" and otherwise, learned to negotiate the shifting boundaries between acceptable and unacceptable violence in their daily lives and communities. The Virtuous and Violent Women of Seventeenth-Century Massachusetts shows that more dramatic violence by women -- including infanticide, the scalping of captors during the Indian Wars, and even witchcraft accusations -- was not necessarily intended to challenge the structures of authority but often sprung from women's desire to protect property, safety, and standing for themselves and their families. The situations in which women chose to flout powerful social conventions and resort to overt violence expose the underlying, often unspoken, priorities and gendered expectations that shaped this society.

Book Synopsis Valiant or Virtuous? by : Suzanne McCarthy
Download or read book Valiant or Virtuous? written by Suzanne McCarthy and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores a systematic bias in translating the Bible and in interpreting its teachings, which suggests that men are inherently suited to be leaders in the home, church, and community, while it is God’s plan for women to submit to men’s leadership. This erroneous understanding of the Bible has been promoted by certain influential evangelical Christian leaders in order to push back the growing influence of feminist attitudes, the expansion of women’s leadership roles, and the increase in egalitarian relationships among evangelicals in English-speaking North America. Written in a down-to-earth, engaging way, this book will appeal to young women searching the Bible for guidance on women’s roles in relationships and in the church. It highlights the dynamic roles played by women in the narratives of Old and New Testament and in the work of Bible translation. Built on a solid framework of biblical and linguistic scholarship, this book will also be of interest to Bible scholars and to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of what the Bible actually says in its original languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two sisters, Zara and Anya, stumble upon their father’s emails with his former lover Mrin, and discover that their old liaison is now encroaching dangerously upon their present lives, and flooding their minds with fear and questions. After reading several messages of love and despair between their father and the ‘perfume woman’ Mrin, the sisters wonder, ‘will this affair destroy their parents’ marriage and their marital bliss?’ One day they find old personal diaries of Mrin with their mother, Somi, and the story turns on its head multiple times. Did Somi know about Mrin, and this hidden aspect of her husband’s life all along? Why is she keeping it a secret? What follows is a topsy-turvy ride from initial hate for the father transferring to the mom, now reviled. The sisters face the question that has gnawed many human beings, ‘Can a man or a woman love two people at the same time with equal passion without feeling guilt and regret?’ The Perfume Woman’s Diaries is a story of star-crossed lovers; of a woman who loved a man all her life, never sure whether he was really with her or with the woman in his memories (to whom she bore more than a striking resemblance). It is a story of love, death, secrets and eventual reconciliation and redemption.

Book Synopsis Recording and Reordering by : Dan Doll
Download or read book Recording and Reordering written by Dan Doll and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this collection consider the diaries And journals of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Diaries and journals took many forms -depending on the occupation, gender, social status, and religious commitment of the writer. They ranged in their forms from brief notes. Related to family business, and national events In preprinted almanacs or the pages of a family Bible, to examinations of spiritual and material States in books dedicated to that purpose. Both Domestic and foreign travel afforded women And men reasons for keeping a diary, and these Varied from highly scientific accounts to more. Personal considerations of the pleasures and discomforts of travel Generically, the diary is situated uneasily, yet fascinatingly between literature and history. Once considered as a pure form of unstructured personal truth telling, the diary is now recognized as a form of writing created by historic conditions, governed by cultural imperatives, and based on literary models, and therefore reflects powerfully on its historical moments and the relationship between life as lived and life as represented in texts.
Book Synopsis Women's Diaries as Narrative in the Nineteenth-Century Novel by : Catherine Delafield
Download or read book Women's Diaries as Narrative in the Nineteenth-Century Novel written by Catherine Delafield and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using private diary writing as her model, Catherine Delafield investigates the cultural significance of nineteenth-century women's writing and reading practices. Beginning with an examination of non-fictional diaries and the practice of diary-writing, she assesses the interaction between the fictional diary and other forms of literary production such as epistolary narrative, the periodical, the factual document and sensation fiction. The discrepancies between the private diary and its use as a narrative device are explored through the writings of Frances Burney, Elizabeth Gaskell, Anne Brontë, Dinah Craik, Wilkie Collins and Bram Stoker. The ideological function of the diary, Delafield suggests, produces a conflict in fictional narrative between that diary's received use as a domestic and spiritual record and its authority as a life-writing opportunity for women. Delafield considers women as writers, readers, and subjects and contextualizes her analysis within nineteenth-century reading practice. She demonstrates ways in which women could becomes performers of their own story through a narrative method which was authorized by their femininity and at the same time allowed them to challenge the myth of domestic womanhood.
