Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute: 1872-1922 By an act of Congress passed in 1862 large grants of public land were made to each State, the proceeds from the sale of which were to endow state colleges. It was required that the main subjects taught should relate directly to agriculture and the mechanic arts, and that military instruction should be given. Scientific subjects and the classics were however not excluded. Such colleges were therefore known as Agricultural and Mechanical Colleges. Download or read book Virginia Tech written by Nelson Harris and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004-08-24 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 130 years after its opening, the once small agricultural college has become Virginia's largest university- Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. When Charles Minor opened the doors of his new land-grant institution in late 1872, there were only 29 students, 3 faculty members, and a single building in the town of Blacksburg, Virginia. From the humble beginning of donated livestock, seeds, machinery, and books, the university now known as Virginia Tech has emerged as a leading research university that is consistently ranked among the nation's best colleges. In addition to housing some of the top engineering and business schools, the university also has a tremendous athletic program that continually produces many of the nation's top ranked athletes. The Campus History Series: Virginia Tech illustrates the university's evolution through over 200 archival photographs, including rare and fun bites of campus history, such as the old cadet rat parades, the first ring dance, the Highty-Tighties, the Huckleberry, and even the evolution of the school's mascot, the Hokie Bird.
Book Synopsis Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities by : National Research Council
Download or read book Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-10-27 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although few Americans work as farmers these days, agriculture on the whole remains economically importantâ€"playing a key role in such contemporary issues as consumer health and nutrition, worker safety and animal welfare, and environmental protection. This publication provides a comprehensive picture of the primary education system for the nation's agriculture industry: the land grant colleges of agriculture. Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities informs the public debate about the challenges that will shape the future of these colleges and serves as a foundation for a second volume, which will present recommendations for policy and institutional changes in the land grant system. This book reviews the legislative history of the land grant system from its establishment in 1862 to the 1994 act conferring land grant status on Native American colleges. It describes trends that have shaped agriculture and agricultural education over the decadesâ€"the shift of labor from farm to factory, reasons for and effects of increased productivity and specialization, the rise of the corporate farm, and more. The committee reviews the system's three-part missionâ€"education, research, and extension serviceâ€"and through this perspective documents the changing nature of funding and examines the unique structure of the U.S. agricultural research and education system. Demographic data on faculties, students, extension staff, commodity and funding clusters, and geographic specializations profile the system and identify similarities and differences among the colleges of agriculture, trends in funding, and a host of other issues. The tables in the appendix provide further itemization about general population distribution, student and educator demographics, types of degree programs, and funding allocations. Concise commentary and informative graphics augment the detailed statistical presentations. This book will be important to policymakers, administrators, educators, researchers, and students of agriculture.

Paul, one of Alex's most trusted partners, quit Reid Enterprises as a result. All Jamie wants is for Alex to own up to his mistakes. After all, in the light of their son going missing, everyone was emotional, and it could easily have been a slip in a moment of frustration. But Alex won't give, and it's driving them apart. Book Synopsis Cadets on Campus by : John A. Coulter
Download or read book Cadets on Campus written by John A. Coulter and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the founding of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1802, more than eight hundred military schools have existed in this country. The vast majority have closed their doors, been absorbed into other educational institutions, or otherwise faded away, but others soldier on, adapting to changing times and changing educational needs. While many individual institutions have had their histories written or their stories told, to date no single book has attempted to explore the full scope of the military school in American history. Cadets on Campus is the first book to cover the origin, history, and culture of the nation’s military schools—secondary and collegiate—and this breadth of coverage will appeal to historians and alumni alike. Author John Alfred Coulter identifies several key figures who were pivotal to the formation of military education, including Sylvanus Thayer, the “father of West Point,” and Alden Partridge, the founder of the school later known as Norwich University, the first private military school in the country. He also reveals that military schools were present across the nation, despite the conventional wisdom that most military schools, and, indeed, the culture that surrounds them, were limited to the South. Coulter addresses the shuttering of military schools in the era after the Vietnam War and then notes a curious resurgence of interest in military education since the turn of the century.
