Alvaro Hickey follows the stories Baja California campesinos are spreading about visits from the Holy Virgin. Though Alvaro doubts her divinity, he’s firmly on her side. She wants them to vote the corrupt and tyrannical Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) out of power. When Lourdes Shuler asks him to unite her with her sister Lupe, Alvaro doesn’t think much of it until Lourdes claims Lupe is the campesinos’ Virgin. Alvaro’s not the kind to turn down an appeal for help, especially from such a beauty. Besides, the published sketch a savant girl drew of the Virgin looks just like Lourdes. He suspects that Lourdes might not have a sister after all. Then, on their way to dinner, Lourdes and Alvaro pick up a tail. Lourdes admits the man could’ve been sent by her brother Andres. But is Lourdes hiding something more? Alvaro chooses to stand with the lady although he knows she might become his last adventure. Then someone arrives to rid the land of this vagabond Virgin....

Book excerpt: It was perhaps unheard of in 1964 for two young blonde Mormon girls from Salt Lake City to hitchhike though the Middle East. My sister and I were driven by a desire for adventure to see the world beyond Utah. But we wanted to remain Mormons, to be able to return to our family, our culture, the world we belonged to. In order to do this, we had to keep our virginity. The Mormon religion requires a temple marriage to enter the Celestial Kingdom in the next life. You cannot be married in the Mormon temple if you are not a virgin. You not only lose your chance of going to the Celestial Kingdom, you risk becoming an outcast from your family as well as your church. Staying pure proved to be very difficult because we traveled only with boys. And as we formed romantic attachments to some of those boys, our struggle to stay chaste became harder and harder, even as we became more and more determined not to lose our virginity. We traveled through Egypt, Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Turkey, and then to Greece, Rome, Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Germany, and finally to Spain and Morocco. We had adventures in cultures very different from Mormon America, but we did not want to become exiles from our own roots. We thought we would return to Salt Lake City to marry good Mormon men and become mothers. This memoir is about our realization, like that of other young women in the early Sixties, that our lives were not our own; they had been determined by the patriarchal culture we'd grown up in. As our horizons broadened, we saw that we no longer had to be bound by the narrow confines of Mormonism. We could strike into territory that was perhaps dangerous, certainly unknown, but was of our own choosing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Judeo-Christian scriptures understand humans as being made in the image of God. What exactly does this mean? Basic agreement is that it means humans can only know and understand themselves in relation to God. If, however, this God is pure uncreated spirit, where does human embodiment fit in? Is it an obstacle to understanding? Or is it in some way instructive? John Paul II comes down decisively in favor of the body’s value and importance. In his catechetical series, widely known as the Theology of the Body, John Paul II analyzes what is distinctive about human beings. He undertakes a “reading” of the body. This book reflects on John Paul II’s interpretation, extending his findings to the Virgin Mary. Her specifically female, maternal body is seen to offer insights into how the body images God—in how it “speaks.” The transformations of the female body parallel the transformations of language in poetry. The reconfigurations and accommodations of the gestational body are, this book suggests, poetic incarnations of God-likeness. Body-Poetics of the Virgin Mary offers a Mariological slant on theological anthropology and a new way to think of how humans poetically image God.

She’s done keeping to herself and staying out of trouble—it’s time to break out of her shell and maybe meet someone intriguing in the process. So, on a photography trip to Bluebonnet, she has a whole lot more on her mind than snapping photos, especially when Rome walks into the picture. Playing dirty is fun. The newest instructor at Wilderness Survival Expeditions has a colorful past, to say the least. Having come from a family of notorious con artists that destroyed his credit and reputation, all before his eighteenth birthday, Rome just wants a decent job and a quiet life in a town where no one knows his name. He’s exactly the kind of bad boy that an innocent girl like Elise should stay far away from. But Elise is tired of doing what’s right. She’s ready to throw caution to the wind—and let Rome show her just how exciting being bad can be…

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Virgin Whore, Emma Maggie Solberg uncovers a surprisingly prevalent theme in late English medieval literature and culture: the celebration of the Virgin Mary’s sexuality. Although history is narrated as a progressive loss of innocence, the Madonna has grown purer with each passing century. Looking to a period before the idea of her purity and virginity had ossified, Solberg uncovers depictions and interpretations of Mary, discernible in jokes and insults, icons and rituals, prayers and revelations, allegories and typologies—and in late medieval vernacular biblical drama. More unmistakable than any cultural artifact from late medieval England, these biblical plays do not exclusively interpret Mary and her virginity as fragile. In a collection of plays known as the N-Town manuscript, Mary is represented not only as virgin and mother but as virgin and promiscuous adulteress, dallying with the Trinity, the archangel Gabriel, and mortals in kaleidoscopic erotic combinations. Mary’s "virginity" signifies invulnerability rather than fragility, redemption rather than renunciation, and merciful license rather than ascetic discipline. Taking the ancient slander that Mary conceived Jesus in sin as cause for joyful laughter, the N-Town plays make a virtue of those accusations: through bawdy yet divine comedy, she redeems and exalts the crime. By revealing the presence of this promiscuous Virgin in early English drama and late medieval literature and culture—in dirty jokes told by Boccaccio and Chaucer, Malory’s Arthurian romances, and the double entendres of the allegorical Mystic Hunt of the Unicorn—Solberg provides a new understanding of Marian traditions.
