Download or read book Strange Spaces written by André Jansson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Certain bizarre spaces, where disruption or disarray rule, leave us estranged and 'out of place'. This book examines such spaces, highlighting the emotional and mediated geographies of uncertainty and the state of being 'in-between'; of cognitive displacement, loss, fear, or exhilaration. It expands on why space is sometimes estranging and for whom it is strange. It is the first book to link strangeness and spatial production, as well as empirical explorations of strange spaces within a profound theoretical discussion of 'what is strange about strange spaces' and how they evolve in a modern media age.

Book Synopsis Blessing Over Darkness by : Pheara (Peter) Am
Download or read book Blessing Over Darkness written by Pheara (Peter) Am and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-03 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pheara (Peter) Am was born in June 1970 in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, to a family of six. It was a time of the prosperous Khmer Republic, when the Cambodian economy was strong. Am heard mixed political messages as a child; his father believed communism was good, while his uncle repeatedly said that communism was evil. During the United States evacuation from Cambodia, many Cambodian orphans were taken to America. Am and his brother were given the opportunity to leave the country, but their parents refused to let them go. Their father doubted that the Khmer Rouge would take over the country, so the family remained in Cambodia. When the regime did take over the country in April, 1975, senseless violence and killings took place throughout Phnom Penh. Am shares the terrifying memories of his life during the horrific Khmer Rouge regime, his harrowing experiences living under another communist regime, the People's Republic of Kampuchea, and his amazing ability to find forgiveness after peace returned to Cambodia in 1993. Experience the riveting, firsthand accounts of Blessings over Darkness: A Real Life Journey From Darkness to Blessing.

Download or read book Dak'Art written by Ugochukwu-Smooth Nzewi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can an art biennale in Dakar, Senegal, tell us about current discourses surrounding the place of art in the world, and in the academic study of anthropology? This volume investigates the Dak'Art biennale, ranked among the world's top 20 biennials, drawing upon fieldwork, archival research, and the experiences of those involved. In so doing, the chapters make a statement about the impact of globally-acting art biennials, contributing to current scholarship both on biennales and the anthropology of art scene more widely. Part I opens with the history of its foundation and considers it in conjunction with the rise of contemporary art in Senegal. Part II deals with the biennale's various objectives, selection strategies, exhibition spaces, platforms for debate, and discourses between the State, the secretariat and local artists and art world professionals. Part III examines the cyclical creation of contemporary African art, and questions if the Biennial creates local canonical practices. The Epilogue uses the Dak'art biennale to question assumptions around practice in general biennale scholarship and work. Featuring a dialogic structure between practitioners of art and anthropologists, this unique volume will be of interest to students of anthropology, art history and practice, African studies and curatorial practice.
