Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative guide is the product of many years of botanical surveying, observations and systematic research both in the Falkland Islands and in the herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. A collaboration between Falklands Conservation and Kew, this guide brings together for the first-time descriptions of all the vascular plants, both native and non-native that have been recorded across the Falkland Islands during its rich botanical history. The guide covers in detail the 181 vascular plants that have been described as native to these islands as well as more than 250 widespread non-native plants, highlighting those that have become invasive and pose a threat to native plants and habitats. The guide is fully illustrated with photographs to enable field identification. Keys to the major groups of plants are included as well as detailed keys for many families including Apiaceae, Astearceae, Cyperaceae, Poaceae and Orchidaceae. Individual species entries include plant descriptions, distribution data, conservation status and other useful notes and field characters. There are also brief illustrated descriptions of the 22 habitat types recognised in the Falkland Islands. The guide is aimed at all those interested in learning more about this fascinating flora. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 book provides a selective annotated bibliography of the principal floras and related works of inventory for vascular plants. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.

Book excerpt: Due to many issues related to long-term carbon dynamics, an improved understanding of the biology of C4 photosynthesis is required by more than the traditional audience of crop scientists, plant physiologists, and plant ecologists. This work synthesizes the latest developments in C4 biochemistry, physiology, systematics, and ecology. The book concludes with chapters discussing the role of C4 plants in the future development of the biosphere, particularly their interactive effects on soil, hydrological, and atmospheric processes.

Book excerpt: "The themes of this book were addressed at a major international conference in 2013, and the expanded papers are presented here as chapters with an introduction by Ian D. Rotherham. The papers are grouped around several themes: Military Landscapes; Battles and Battlefields; The Impacts of Conflict and War; War & Peat in the Peak District; and Non-military Campaigns. As we approach the centenary of the Great War (WW1), matters of landscape, terrain, resources and strategies become increasingly topical and relevant. The relationships of people and landscapes, of economies and conflicts, and ecology and history, are complex and multi-faceted. For peatlands, including bogs, fens, moors, and heaths, the interactions of people and nature in relation to history and conflicts, are both significant and surprising."--

Among key topics covered are: soil nutrient bioavailability; root responses to variations in nutrient supply; nitrogen fixation; root architecture; life span; mycorrhizae; responses to climate change. The book helps us understand the mechanisms that govern present-day plant communities and to predict the response of plants to a changing climate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Vegetation Science is growing. After the first volumes und er my editorship have appeared the interest of the scientific community has been revived and many new volume editors have started their work. The present volume wasjointly designed by Drs. J. White and W. Beeftink. Due to unforseen developments Dr. White signs now as the sole editor. The development of this volume within the series had a special history as Dr. White pointsout in his preface. Adding to this I need only to state that I found it essential to include the topic of this volume into a Hand book of Vegetation Science. lt was included therefore in my first revised Iist of topics to be included in the Handbook when I took over from Dr. Tüxen. It is a great pleasure for me to see this volume appear. Having read through the many contributions to this volume I can certainly congratu late Drs. White and Beeftink for their success in generating so much interest in this volume among their colleagues. The cooperation on this volume is forme the first sign that the new concept of the Handbook has been understood by the generation of scientists which I have to address. The influence this volume will have on the field ofplant population studies only time can teil. It appears to me, however, that this volume will become a standard resource for some future. Dr. White asked me to have this volume dedicated to Dr. Rabotnov.
