Book excerpt: The U.S. Army captured Jace when she was five and locked her away in a secret containment facility specially built for her kind, a prison she's desperate to escape. For Jace, life inside is about staying alive, trusting no one, and finding a way out of the most heavily guarded ten acres on the planet. That's going to be tough since Jace is one of the Army's most valuable assets. Gray, meanwhile, is a "runner." His older sister, Nia, fled with him the night before the Army arrived. Since then, they drift from town to town living off the grid, stealing identities in order to survive. Although Gray and Nia don't live behind walls, they are trapped in a different kind of prison, one they too are desperate to escape. For them, life is about staying invisible, a tall order since Gray keeps helping people. Now the Army has found out about Gray and Nia, and it can't allow them to roam free. Operating on the theory that it takes one to catch one, the Army has a deal for Jace. Lead a five-man hit squad to hunt them down, and in exchange Jace can leave. Only, someone inside the government doesn't want Jace to succeed. What ensues is a desperate chase through city after city against a backdrop of love and betrayal. During the final showdown, each must confront the question: how far am I willing to go to be free?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on ten years of collaborative, community-based research, this book examines race and racism in a mixed-heritage Native American and African American community on Long Island’s north shore. Through excavations of the Silas Tobias and Jacob and Hannah Hart houses in the village of Setauket, Christopher Matthews explores how the families who lived here struggled to survive and preserve their culture despite consistent efforts to marginalize and displace them over the course of more than 200 years. He discusses these forgotten people and the artifacts of their daily lives within the larger context of race, labor, and industrialization from the early nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. A Struggle for Heritage draws on extensive archaeological, archival, and oral historical research and sets a remarkable standard for projects that engage a descendant community left out of the dominant narrative. Matthews demonstrates how archaeology can be an activist voice for a vulnerable population’s civil rights as he brings attention to the continuous, gradual, and effective economic assault on people of color living in a traditional neighborhood amid gentrification. Providing examples of multiple approaches to documenting hidden histories and silenced pasts, this study is a model for public and professional efforts to include and support the preservation of historic communities of color. Book excerpt: A writer begins the task of composing a memoir by remembering carefully. In Embracing Life: A Simple Trust, Barbara Van Brunt casts her eyes through decades of family interactions, more than fifty years of Salvation Army ministry, and dozens of friendships, carefully remembering the joys and sorrows of birthing five children, serving in over a dozen ministry appointments, and fully embracing the adventure of life. While writing to preserve her life stories for her children and grandchildren, these pages also capture the essence of a life lived in commitment to Christ. The reader is invited to laugh and to weep, and to marvel at what God can accomplish through a woman dedicated to his service.

Book Synopsis Ending Campus Violence by : Brian Van Brunt
Download or read book Ending Campus Violence written by Brian Van Brunt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the growth of threats and violence in higher education settings, college campuses are increasingly expected to have systems in place to identify potentially aggressive individuals and intervene to ensure the safety of the campus population. This book will be useful for student affairs professionals as well as college counselors, psychologists, social workers interested in the practical management of aggression and violence on a college campus. It will also be a valuable resource for those involved in creating and running behavioral intervention teams and threat/risk assessment teams. Ten case studies from both the community and residential college settings provide a comprehensive overview of campus violence and how to intervene to prevent it. Pertinent background information is discussed as an introduction to these narratives, such as the fundamentals of aggression and violence on campuses; how these behaviors can impact students, faculty, and staff; and what can be learned from past campus violence. Along with discussion questions and a review of ways to approach each situation, experts in higher education, forensic risk assessment, law enforcement, and legal issues weigh in on each case study. Their perspectives offer a context and broad base of opinions and ideas on how each case could be handled. Additional examples for further training of the college counselor are given through a detailed look at almost 100 incidents of violence, including thwarted attacks, rampage shootings, and hostage situations.
