Book excerpt: While Jim Kent lies in his bed, thinking that he is dying from a fatal serious disease, he confesses to having committed a murder but he also falls head over heels in love with Marette Radisson, after she pays him a short visit. Kent is captivated by her dazzling beauty and violet-flamed eyes, and she is about to change the course of his life. Did Jim Kent actually commit the murder, or is he covering up for someone else? Who is Marette Radisson and what role will she play? Find all the answers in James Oliver Curwood’s 1920 novel "The Valley of Silent Men". James Oliver Curwood (1878 - 1927) was an American writer as well as an unwavering nature lover and conservationist. As such, many of Curwood’s action-adventure stories were based on real events from the rugged landscapes of the American Northwest. He built himself Curwood Castle, which he used as a writing studio and as a place to greet guests. More than 150 motion pictures have been adapted to or directly inspired by his novels.

Book excerpt: When he thought he was dying, Sergeant Kent, the best man-trapper in the Royal Mounted, told a story that branded him as a murderer and set another man free. But the doctor's diagnosis was wrong; death by hanging grinned in the trooper's face. Love of life and a beautiful mystery girl, who had laughed at him and called him a liar, now made him a fugitive - a hunter becomes the hunted. With him, down those fabled rivers flowing north to the frozen Arctic, sped the girl, whose own secret winds like a thread of wild magic to the hidden Valley of Silent Men. James Oliver Curwood lived most of his life in Owosso, Michigan, where he was born on June 12, 1878. His first novel was The Courage of Captain Plum (1908) and he published one or two novels each year thereafter, until his death on August 13, 1927. Owosso residents honor his name to this day, and Curwood Castle (built in 1922) is the town's main tourist attraction. During the 1920s Curwood became one of America's best selling and most highly paid authors. This was the decade of his lasting classics The Valley of Silent Men (1920) and The Flaming Forest (1921). He and his wife Ethel were outdoors fanatics and active conservationists.

Download or read book Six Silent Men written by Reynel Martinez and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "No way in hell you could survive 'out there' with six men. You couldn't live thirty minutes 'out there' with only six men." [pg. 13] In 1965 nearly four hundred men were interviewed and only thirty-two selected for the infant LRRP Detachment of the lst Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. Old-timers called it the suicide unit. Whether conducting prisoner snatches, search and destroy missions, or hunting for the enemy's secret base camps, LRRPs depended on one another 110 percent. One false step, one small mistake by one man could mean sudden death for all. Author Reynel Martinez, himself a 101st LRRP Detachment veteran, takes us into the lives and battles of the extraordinary men for whom the brotherhood of war was and is an ever-present reality: the courage, the sacrifice, the sense of loss when one of your own dies. In the hills, valleys, and triple-canopy jungles, the ambushes, firefights, and copter crashes, LRRPs were among the best and bravest to fight in Vietnam.
