Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) conducted an investigation to determine the effect of multi-mode propagation on the usefulness of the Omega 3.4 KHz difference frequency for aircraft navigation. This investigation was conducted under the sponsorship of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and with the cooperation of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). A NOAA aircraft that was equipped with Omega receivers was used for this investigation. Flights were made between Grand Forks AFB, Grand Forks, North Dakota and Piarco airport in Trinidad. Position fixes, for comparison with those obtained from the Omega system, were obtained from the standard VOR/VORTAC stations when the aircraft was over the continental United States and doppler radar and inertial systems were used on the portion of the flights that were over water. The flights made during nighttime conditions when the effects of multi-mode propagation were the most pronounced. The data for this specific path and under nighttime conditions show that the 3.4 kHz difference frequency can be used for navigation using only simple correction factors if an accuracy of + or - 5 miles is acceptable. More data are required to determine the accuracy that can be obtained in other areas and during other propagation conditions. (Author).
Book Synopsis The Use of Composite Omega and the 3.4 KHz Difference Frequency for Aircraft Navigation by : John W. Brogden

This book was released on 1972 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) furnished the National Hurricane Research Laboratory with an Omega aircraft receiving system which was manufactured by Tracor, Inc. This system was installed in a hurricane watch aircraft operating out of Miami, Flordia. FAA was interested in obtaining data on the usefulness of Composite Omega and the uncorrected difference frequency (3.4 kHz) for aircraft navigation. The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) was requested by FAA to recommend procedures for obtaining data and methods for data reduction. Data was to be collected on routine flights and reduced by the National Hurricane Research Laboratory and then sent to NRL for analysis. Results that were submitted show extremely large errors in position that could only have been caused by receiver malfunctions or in the data reduction. Therefore no significant conclusions could be drawn from the information that was submitted. Since the main purpose of the study was not achievable it was felt that fixed site data could also be used to evaluate the composite Omega concept. However, whithin the funds available only a limited amount of fixed data could be analyzed and therefore the results are not conclusive. The limited data show no significant improvement in the errors due to diurnal variations of composite Omega over the 3.4 kHz difference frequency. The data did show however that the fluctuations due to noise were reduced by the composite Omega method over what was shown by the 3.4 kHz difference frequency data. (Author).

This book was released on 1969 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of composite Omega, as developed by J.A. Pierce, is shown to be equivalent to a statistical optimization of the information available from two Omega carrier frequencies. However, composite Omega offers no increased stability over that available from the 13.6-kHz carrier except over arctic paths during disturbed conditions. From a statistical standpoint, conventional lane resolution of the 10.2-kHz carrier lanes from 3.4-kHz difference frequency measurements is a virtual certainty except during disturbed conditions. Book Synopsis Introduction to Avionics Systems by : R.P.G. Collinson
Download or read book Introduction to Avionics Systems written by R.P.G. Collinson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Avionic Systems, Second Edition explains the principles and theory of modern avionic systems and how they are implemented with current technology for both civil and military aircraft. The systems are analysed mathematically, where appropriate, so that the design and performance can be understood. The book covers displays and man-machine interaction, aerodynamics and aircraft control, fly-by-wire flight control, inertial sensors and attitude derivation, navigation systems, air data and air data systems, autopilots and flight management systems, avionic systems integration and unmanned air vehicles. About the Author. Dick Collinson has had "hands-on" experience of most of the systems covered in this book and, as Manager of the Flight Automation Research Laboratory of GEC-Marconi Avionics Ltd. (now part of BAE Systems Ltd.), led the avionics research activities for the company at Rochester, Kent for many years. He was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 1989 for his contribution to avionic systems research and development.
