Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Use of Projects in Religious Education This volume is one in a series of texts in religious education known as the Judson Training Manuals for the School of the Church. These manuals are arranged in three groups, namely, general, departmental, and parent-training. The general group includes vital teaching, storytelling, educational evangelism, expression through worship, handwork, community service, appreciation of the Bible, educational leadership, and kindred worth-while themes in the field of religious education. The departmental group covers courses for every department of the school of the church Cradle Roll, Beginners, Primary, Junior, etc. The parent-training manuals emphasize religion in the home and the necessity of training for the God-given, heaven-blessed privilege of parenthood. It is the aim of these manuals to popularize the assured results of the best psychology and pedagogy and to make them the willing and efficient servants of all workers in the school of the church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Family-Centered Religious Education: A Military Ministry After reflecting on the changing family, subject to so many pressures today, and looking at the advantages to be found in a family-centered religious education program, it remains but to choose the best program models. As would be expected, there are a number of family-centered programs available that can influence family life and that are appropriate for military families. One of these programs is the Marriage Encounter program that builds on the art of parental communication. Another is the Family Cluster Education with its focus on values clarification and total religious education. The Parent Effectiveness Training and Effective Parenting Programs are worthy of note for they facilitate family communication and teach skills most useful for family life. The Family Enrichment program where parents and children attend classes, receive resource materials, and work on projects together at home, is a meaningful thrust that involves all members of the family and teaches them to work together as a unit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Teaching Two texts have been written for the teacher training program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since Dr. Adam S. Bennion's Book Principles of Teaching was published, yet in spite of the fact that this book has been out of print several years so many requests for it have poured in that the General Superintendency has decided to satisfy the demand with this new edition. This book with its classic qualities in many ways fits Shakespeare's description of a beautiful woman when he said, Age cannot wither her nor custom dim her in finite variety. Anyone who knows Dr. Bennion or has read his writings knows that neither custom nor age has dimmed his infinite variety. Furthermore, a glance at the table of contents of this book will reveal the fact that the problems and principles treated herein are just as real today as they were when the text was written. This little volume is republished in the h0pe that it again will become one of the basic texts in the teacher training program and fulfill its mission as an instrument in the hands of sincere people who have the devout wish of learning how to teach the principles of the gospel by the power of the Holy Spirit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1960 publication of We Hold These Truths marked a significant event in the history of modern American thought. Since that time, Sheed & Ward has kept the book in print and has published several studies of John Courtney Murray's life and work. We are proud to present a new edition of this classic text, which features a comprehensive introduction by Peter Lawler that places Murray in the context of Catholic and American history and thought while revealing his relevance today. From the new Introduction by Peter Lawler: The Jesuit John Courtney Murray (1904-67) was, in his time, probably the best known and most widely respected American Catholic writer on the relationship between Catholic philosophy and theology and his country's political life. The highpoint of his influence was the publication of We Hold These Truths in the same year as an election of our country's first Catholic president. Those two events were celebrated by a Time cover story (December 12, 1960) on Murray's work and influence. The story's author, Protestant Douglas Auchincloss, reported that it was "The most relentlessly intellectual cover story I've done." His amazingly wide ranging and dense--if not altogether accurate--account of Murray's thought was crowned with a smart and pointed conclusion: "If anyone can help U.S. Catholics and their non-Catholic countrymen toward the disagreement that precedes understanding--John Courtney Murray can." . . . Murray's work, of course, is treated with great respect and has had considerable influence, but now it's time to begin to think of him as one of America's very few genuine political philosophers. His disarmingly lucid and accessible prose has caused his book to be widely cited and celebrated, but it still is not well understood. It is both praised and blamed for reconciling Catholic faith with the fundamental premises of American political life. It is praised by liberals for paving the way for Vatican II's embrace of the American idea of religious liberty, and it is

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
